Panasonic packs a punch with portable Blu-ray player at CES (hands-on)

Panasonic was showing off its new lineup of cameras and camcorders at its display table at Digital Experience, but that wasn’t what really caught our eyes. Nope, that honor went to the DMP-B500, a portable Blu-ray player that had both a killer screen and a (fairly) slim profile. Better yet, it doubles as a standalone Blu-ray player when you connect it to your TV, and it links up nicely with other VIERA products. Also on display was a WiFi photo frame with a built in CD player and a hidden iPod dock. Calendar and photo widgets looked nice on the crisp display, and let’s just put it this way, we don’t know how much we’d mind waking up to that in the morning. You don’t have to take our word for it though, check our the goods in our hands-on gallery.

Sprint Overdrive 3G / 4G router officially announced

We saw the Sprint Overdrive 3G / 4G mobile hotspot leak out last week, and now it’s official — Sprint just announced it here at CES. It’s pretty much what you’d expect: the Sierra Wireless-built box connects to Sprint’s WiMAX network and shares that connection with up to five devices over WiFi — and if the 4G connection drops, it’ll seamlessly switch to EVDO. You’re looking at $99 after a $50 rebate with a two year $59/mo service agreement when it goes on sale January 10 at Best Buy and Sprint stores. Looks like the MiFi just got shown up, eh?

Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 hands-on

We just got a short and sweet look at the UH900 and, lo and behold, it’s pretty much what you expected: The keyboard size seemed sufficient for short bursts of creativity (if not composing your entire epic pome or tome), but the display seemed to be too little payoff for the bulk of the thing. Multitouch is a blessing, but we’ll have to see how well it performs in the real world (and we imagine we will find out, soon enough). But that’s enough blather — get a closer look in the gallery below.

Sony‘s just announced a ton of new laptops. And by a ton, we mean a ton. First up, the 13.1-inch Vaio Z high res backlit screen and weighs in at just around three pounds. Moving on to the Vaio W (the most interesting of the lot for sure, in out opinions), this laptop’s cashing in on the eco-friendly game by being… eco-friendly. Microsoft announces Game Room for Xbox 360

This one leaked out a bit ahead of schedule along with the rest of Microsoft’s big CES announcements, but Robbie Bach has now gotten fully official with Game Room for the Xbox 360, which promises to recreate the old school arcade experience for you (and your avatar). Set to launch “this Spring,” it’ll initially give you access to thirty classic arcade games, which you’ll be able to buy once and play on both your Xbox 360 and your PC. The real action seems to be on the Xbox 360 though, as that’s where you’ll be able to challenge your friends to a “show down,” although there unfortunately doesn’t seem to be any betting of Microsoft points instead of quarters. Head on past the break for a quick promo video.

CES: Panasonic announces its first 3D Blu-ray player

Xbox 360 will support AT&T’s U-Verse TV later this year

Microsoft Mediaroom

Just a quick little note from Microsoft’s CES 2010 keynote, but man it’s a surprise. AT&T U-Verse subscribers will soon be able to use their Xbox 360s as a set-top box. AT&T U-Verse is the one IPTV provider in the US — admittedly there aren’t many — that utilizes Microsoft’s Mediaroom platform and while it was announced at CES three years ago that the 360 could act as a Mediaroom set-top, up until now AT&T customers didn’t have this option — well, maybe not now as an exact release date wasn’t mentioned. We also don’t have a clue if AT&T will charge for this type of thing. Another thing cool that was mentioned was that a Windows 7 PC can also work as a Mediaroom set-top and Mediaroom was even demoed on a Windows Mobile phone.

The Invisible OLED Laptop to End All Laptops

It’s only a proof of concept, but this is laptop with a clear OLED screen—but a stone’s throw from those floating 3D displays of Avatar. Practical? Not necessarily. The future? OBVIOUSLY.

The resolution is less than a 1000 wide, and less than 600 tall on this 14 incher. It’s pixely, but let’s not quibble.

You see right through the 40% translucent screen, then something appears on the screen (like a white background), and you can’t see through it anymore.

Are you processing this? No, you can’t be. It’s only 2010. Man wasn’t prepared for this kind of technology yet. The brain hasn’t evolved enough. We’re primates. Squirrels. Slugs.

Maybe in 100 or 200 years, the great artists of the world will reflect on what’s happened today and make some sort of sense of it all. Until then, we’ll just keep on breathing, in, out. Until then, we’ll weep.

Live from Sprint’s ‘4G Experience’ event at CES 2010

We’re live from Sprint’s “4G Experience” event here at CES, which leaves little to the imagination — or does it? We don’t know what the company intends to unveil here, but we spied Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo wandering around outside, so it could be an extraordinarily surprising get-together indeed.
