New Xbox 360 loses ability to flash a red ring, can still probably die a fiery death
Posted in: e3, Microsoft, Today's Chili, xbox 360, Xbox360It’s a color we know so well, but it looks like Microsoft would like to dissociate itself from its RROD heritage, or perhaps just ran out of red LEDs: the new Xbox 360 only has a green ring around its power button, so even if you wrap the thing in a blanket and set it on fire, it won’t be flashing red to tell you how it feels. This was unearthed in a spec sheet that Joystiq received from a tipster, along with all the other fancy specs you can see above. Overall the console is 17% smaller, which really goes to show that Microsoft was much more interested in noise and heat reduction than sliding the new 360 into a smaller crevice of your home entertainment center.

Unibody Mac mini meets iFixit, gets a delicate teardown exposé
Posted in: Apple, desktop, Mac, teardown, Today's ChiliBeen wondering how Apple’s managed to cram all that goodness into the new (and flatter) unibody Mac mini? Well, look no further, as our friends over at iFixit took no time to acquire said machine for another scrupulous teardown treatment. Just as we saw ourselves, it all begins with a simple twist on the bottom round plate, and with a bit of fiddling the guts can then easily slide out — you’ll see a wondrously dense logic board along with its now-internal power supply and the usual components. We’ve thrown in iFixit’s list of highlights after the break, but as always, hit the source link for the finely detailed disassembly guide.

Samsung shows no signs of letting up when it comes to Android smart phone, but this time it is keeping your wallet in mind. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://www.cnet.com/8301-19736_1-20007965-251.html” class=”origPostedBlog”Android Atlas/a/p

June is here so you know what that means. Not only do we get a new a class=”cnet-product” href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/apple-iphone-4-32gb/4505-6452_7-34117595.html”iPhone/a, but also every other manufacturer rushes to grab the spotlight from Apple. This week on Dialed In we talk about the latest Android phone news (and there’s a slot of that), Bonnie and Kent speculate on what iOS4 will mean for Google’s little green guy, and we discuss our latest reviews. Also in the podcast, Nicole scolds Kent on the correct date for Father’s Day, Kent scolds RIM for not being innovative, and Bonnie almost loses it over Samsung’s phone naming system. Speaking of which, did you know Samsung pays a person to sit around and only think of phone names? Well, Bonnie has the full scoop.

Note that next week (June 23) we won’t have a Dialed In podcast.

PlayStation 3 in 3D impressions: almost, but not quite
Posted in: e3, playstation 3, Playstation3, ps3, sony, Today's ChiliThere are plenty of opinions to be had on 3D, and while many of the staff at Engadget could take it or leave it, this particular writer is a pretty firm fan of the concept. Notice the word “concept.” 3D is hard to pull off well. We’ve all had to come to grips with the dimming effect of most 3D tech, due to the fact that we’re only seeing about half the potential brightness of a display, and 3D gaming presents a whole different ream of problems. Follow after the break as we walk through some of our experiences with the PlayStation 3 in 3D and see if it can measure up to our hopes and dreams for a world with one extra dimension.

Sony NEX-5 preview
Posted in: 1080p, camera, digicam, digital camera, DigitalCamera, impressions, preview, sony, Today's Chili, videoIn every geek’s life, the time must come when he or she steps away from the pocket-friendly compact point-and-shooter and straps up with a hefty DSLR to do real photography with. Or such was the received wisdom until not too long ago. It’s still the case that lenses, bound by the laws of physics, will protrude more than most of us want them to, but mirrorless Micro Four Thirds shooters from Olympus and Panasonic, along with Samsung’s NX series, have shown that prosumer camera bodies don’t always have to be that bulky. This is the stage upon which the NEX-5 enters, with Sony predictably aiming to outdo everyone using an ultraslim magnesium alloy body that delivers 1080p video and 14 megapixel stills. Join us after the break to see what we thought of the Japanese giant’s latest product.
