AT&T Suspends iPhone 4 Pre-Ordering After System Collapse [Iphone 4]

AT&T suspends iPhone 4 pre-orders altogether, says they were ten times 3GS’ numbers
Posted in: Apple, breaking news, BreakingNews, iPhone, pre-order, PreOrder, Today's ChiliAT&T just kicked things up another notch, going from a launch day pre-order sellout for the iPhone 4 to… well, a total pre-order sellout. The carrier has announced this morning that it’s “suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we’ve already received,” saying only that it will resume the pre-order process when it can wrap its brain around the “additional inventory” it’ll have on hand. It’s hard to gauge where this lies on the truth / hype meter, but for what it’s worth, they’re saying that pre-orders outstripped the 3GS by a factor of ten, and eligibility checks were three times higher than the previous one-day record. Or… you know, maybe they just don’t want any more information falling into the wrong hands until they can figure things out. Follow the break for AT&T’s full statement.

Apple’s Mac Mini gets a living room-friendly makeover
Garmin nuvi 3790T review
Posted in: feature, Features, gps, nav, navigation, review, Today's Chili, videoFor the most part, standalone navigators have retained their same form factor for the better part of the last five years. Each one looked like the other, with the main differentiators being a fold-out or integrated antenna and a big or small display. With intense competition coming from the smartphone space (yeah, we’re looking at you, Google), the bigwigs at TomTom and Garmin are obviously thinking of ways to innovate and keep their consumer PNDs relevant. We aren’t exactly convinced that shaping said navigators like said smartphones is the best answer, but you won’t find us kvetching about the sleek lines and slim nature of the nüvi 3790T. Announced back in April alongside the 3760T and 3750 models, the king of the 3700 series packs a 4.3-inch WVGA multitouch display and a frame that’s just 9mm thick; what you’re left with is the most stunning personal NAV system on the planet, and we’ve had the opportunity to test one out before it hits US shelves in July. Care to see if this beaut is worth $449? Head on past the break for our two pennies (and a video overview, too!).

webOS 1.4.5 reportedly coming any day now… except for AT&T users
Posted in: att, delay, mobile os, MobileOs, operating system, OperatingSystem, palm, Software, Today's Chili, webosAs friends very near and dear to us have confessed, “soon” is a relative term. If you’ll recall, we heard from Palm (in)directly that the next webOS update was “coming soon” back in the early days of May, and here we are a fortnight from July without so much as an update regarding the update. Well, without an official update. A source over at Pre|Central has confirmed that a release of webOS 1.4.5 is “imminent,” and while the primary purpose will be to get a better handle on PDK apps, it’s also expected to finally bring 3D gaming to the oft-forgotten Pixi. Purportedly, carrier testing on the new OS is just about wrapped, with one unnamed operator waiting for a small bug to be squashed and AT&T simply waiting for waiting’s sake. At any rate, we’re still left twiddling our thumbs and hoping for the best, but at least we’ve a sliver of hope that our patience is about to pay off.

NYFI aims to implement free WiFi on Long Island Rail Road and Metro
Posted in: free, new-york, Today's Chili, wifiMmm… the smell of gratis wireless broadband in morning. Even Starbucks agrees, you just can’t beat it. One smell we could stand to live without is the stench left on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro after a few too many party people hitch a ride following a long Sunday in the city pub, but having free access to the world wide web while riding will make the act of dealing a whole lot easier. All jesting aside, NYFI (described as a “well financed neutral host WiFi provider”), has recently submitted a proposal to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York (MTA) to “build and operate a new WiFi network on Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road trains.” Unlike similar ideas thrown around in the Big Apple, this setup won’t require users to be subscribers of a cable service or any of the many religious cults going around these days. Head on past the break if you actually care to know how it’ll be financed (hint: you don’t), and be sure to push whoever you have to push to ensure this gets passed. Got it?

Another Android tablet spotted? Say it ain’t so!
Posted in: Android, android tablet, AndroidTablet, handheld, slate, tablet, Today's ChiliWhat’s this? Oh, just yet another Android tablet spotted in the wild hanging out, looking cool. This one, made by Acorp, is a 5-incher with Android 1.5 (upgradable to 2.2) and we have to say, it definitely looks a lot like the Dell Streak. We also hear that there’s going to be a 7-inch version as well, if you need something that’s absolutely massive. It’s got a 600MHz Rockchip ARM9 processor, micrsSD slot, 3.5mm jack and Wi-Fi, and a resistive touchscreen with stylus. We know that it’s going to be available sometime next month, and while we don’t have pricing information, we’ve heard that if you’re willing to buy it in bulk (over 1,000 units, friend) they’ll be around $88 each. Deal? Video after the break.
