JBL ships MS-8 digital processor, promises to ‘revolutionize’ car audio
Posted in: audio, Music, sound, Today's Chili, videoRemember that JBL MS-8 you plopped atop your must-have list back in March? No? Fret not, as quite a bit has happened in the meantime. Today, however, the aforesaid outfit is shipping its new in-car digital processor, which remains a bit of a mystery device that magically improves audio quality for up to four seating positions simultaneously. JBL assures us that the real secret sauce lies in the software, and with it, people will apparently “never experience music in their vehicle the same way again.” This all sounds a bit Bose-ish to us, but at least we’re told the specifications: the box includes an onboard 20W x 8 amplifier, eight-channel preamp-level and speaker-level inputs and outputs, and full-range stereo auxiliary input. The package also includes a wireless RF remote, LCD display (with a five-line, 128 x 64-pixel screen), Logic 7 technology and a graphic equalizer with 31 bands. The actual installation process also remains a mystery — all we’re told is that a pro could do it during the time it’d take you to have lunch, but given that this thing isn’t wireless, you can bet that a good bit of splicing will be in order. Head on past the break for a look at what $799 nets you.

T-Mobile expands HSPA+ footprint, now covers over 25 metro areas
Posted in: hspa, t-mobile, Today's ChiliThe nation’s number four carrier is once again pressing ahead with its big HSPA+ expansion, announcing today that speeds of up to 21Mbps (theoretically, of course) will be available in over 25 metropolitan areas covering more than 75 million folks by the end of the month. In conjunction with the expansion, that means that T-Mobile’s webConnect Rocket USB modem will be available in the newly-upgraded markets, which include LA, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Tampa, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and New Orleans, among others. Interestingly, the carrier isn’t shying away at all on its questionably-truthful “4G speeds” talk despite some pooh-poohing from rivals, so we’ll have to see whether the claims hold up once the networks start to build up a little saturation. Follow the break for T-Mobile’s release.

Microsoft luring iPhone game devs to Windows Phone 7 with cold, hard cash?
Posted in: Apple, game, Games, gaming, iPhone, Microsoft, Today's Chili, windows phone, windows phone 7, WindowsPhone, WindowsPhone7A solid third-party app ecosystem is going to be absolutely critical to Windows Phone 7’s commercial success — and Microsoft clearly knows that, having spent nearly as much (if not more) energy talking to developers since the platform’s announcement than it has directly to potential end users. In particular, one area where Microsoft really wants to play ball (pardon the pun) is with a rock-sold gaming experience — and to that end, it seems Redmond isn’t being shy about putting its money where its mouth is. The rumor going around today is that Microsoft is reaching out to developers of popular iPhone games, offering cash in exchange for a Windows Phone 7 port; you might think that most of these devs would be totally down with dropping their games on a hot new platform with revenue potential, but the challenge is that WP7’s development environment is different enough from the iPhone’s to make porting a pretty big challenge. The dev that allegedly contacted PocketGamer.biz about the offer turned it down, saying the financial compensation was “substantial” but ultimately not enough for the amount of work he’d have to put into it — so this might just be a question of how badly Microsoft wants to come roaring out of the gate with a great catalog of apps. They’ve certainly got the cash to make this happen if they decide to up the ante.

Apple iPhone 4 pre-orders now sold out?
Posted in: Apple, iPhone, pre-order, PreOrder, Today's ChiliWe have no idea how this happened given the insane problems Apple and AT&T have had processing iPhone 4 pre-orders today, but lots of people (including us) are seeing a July 2 ship date at Apple’s online store, or about a week after the next-gen iPhone launches on June 24. Frankly, that’s amazing — we can only imagine the kind of sustained rush it took to cause a sellout of a product virtually no one was actually able to order. So that’s Apple and AT&T both sold out — at this point it’s looking like standing in line somewhere come launch day is going to be your best bet, but we’ll let you know if we hear any better news.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 gets Core i7 option, extra vroom vroom
Posted in: CoreI7, intel, lenovo, processor, thinkpad, Today's ChiliWe’ll be straight with you, we’re typing away on a Core i3-equipped Edge 14 right now and we rarely feel the need for more power, but then it’s not like Lenovo can afford to keep one of its prettier models sated with just i3s and i5s now, is it? Of course not, so here we are, gazing at a fresh new Core i7-620M upgrade option on the ThinkPad Edge 14, which will set eager buyers back an extra $350 over the more budget-friendly i3-330M default. Opting to splash that hard earned cash will net you Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz and a not too shabby 2.66GHz regular clock, plus 4MB of cache. The Edge 15, which has so far been just a slightly larger twin to the 14, hasn’t yet felt the warm embrace of upgrade mania, but we suspect it too will soon start offering options from Intel’s top tier.
[Thanks, Jeremy]

PlayStation Move bundle up for pre-order at Best Buy and GameStop
Posted in: BestBuy, playstation, playstation 3, Playstation3, ps3, Today's Chili
We’re sure every other retailer in the world will have PlayStation Move orders up in the next week or so, but Best Buy and GameStop are leading the charge: the $99 Move bundle that include the PS Eye, a Move controller and Sports Champions is now available for pre-order, with an estimated delivery date between November 1st and the 6th — just a little bit after the announced September 19th launch date. We’re sure that’ll be revised as things get firmed up, though. So, what’s it going to be? Considering we’re still guessing at Microsoft’s final Kinect pricing, we’d say the decision’s a tough one, but honestly, you know we’re totally buying all of this stuff and having an all-night dance off.
[Thanks, William]

Nintendo 3DS in-depth preview: it works!
Posted in: 3ds, e3, impressions, nintendo, nintendo 3ds, Nintendo3ds, preview, Today's ChiliSo, we got shuffled past a 3DS at a rapid pace this morning on our way out of the Nintendo keynote, but we’ve just had an opportunity to play some titles and really get a feel for the thing… and we’re pretty impressed. Before we were only shown a technical demo, but at Nintendo’s booth there are games, games, games. The booth was about evenly split between playable tech demos, non-playable live-rendered trailers, and regular 3D movies. Nintendo clearly is hard at work on titles for its system, and there’s plenty of third party clout getting into the mix. Still, what impressed us more than the quantity was the quality. Most of the games are pretty easily on the level of iPhone 3GS graphics, and the 3D effect “just worked” on most all of them. Follow after the break for our full thoughts.
Update: We’ve also got partial tech specs on the handheld — find them after the break, too.
Update 2: We added a video of nintendogs + cats gameplay. It’s very adorable, we assure you.
