Nokia C7 first hands-on

We’ve just played with both black and silver versions of Nokia’s just-announced C7 — a phone that you might call an N8 for the masses — and we think it’s probably going to come away with the “sexiest Symbian device” crown by the time it’s on shelves. We’re a little concerned with screen sensitivity; on both the C7 and C6-01, we had a little difficulty getting home screen swipes to actuate — but you never know what the deal is with these well-handled protos, so we’re going to hold off on passing judgment until we’ve got retail units in our hands. The black’s a little unnotable, but the silver really pops in person — maybe it’s just the lighting — and the screen seems to perform nearly as well as the C6’s so-called ClearBlack AMOLED, so unless you need a monster cam, the C7 might be your Symbian^3 device of choice when it launches later this year. Hit the gallery for shots of both colors!

Update: The display seemed to look as good as the C6-01’s because we’ve confirmed that it is ClearBlack! Rock on.

Nokia makes E7 QWERTY slider official: ‘beautiful and all business’ (update: specs)

Nokia’s just unveiled its aluminum-clad E7 QWERTY slider handset. One of the new family of Symbian^3 devices, it has a 4-inch tilting touchscreen display on the front and an 8 megapixel imager capable of 720p video on the back. Yummy. It’s said to be the best business device Nokia, or anyone else, has ever produced and comes with the touted ability to create PowerPoint slides on the go. The E7 also features Nokia’s new ClearBlack Display sorcery and is expected to ship before the end of the year in exchange for €495 (before taxes and subsidies). You’ll find the full press release after the break.

Update: By now you’ll have noticed that the E7 and N8 are almost identical outside of the E7’s 4-inch display and slightly bigger chassis required to host it. There are a few other differences, though. For example, The 12.9mm-thin N8 has an FM transmitter and 2mm charging connector unlike the slightly thicker 13.6mm E7. The E7’s bigger display also trims back the reported talk time to 540 minutes (the N8 does 720 minutes). Of course, as part of the business focused E-series, the E7 also features a healthy set of preloaded apps including Mail for Exchange (with MS Outlook sync of contacts, calendar, and notes and multiple calendars with meeting request support), IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Quickoffice dynamic premium, Adobe PDF reader, and F-Secure Anti-theft. The N8 counters with the better camera and stereo mic, thanks to a big 1/1.83-inch 12 megapixel sensor and Xenon flash that require some extra girth on the backend. Oh, and no MicroSD slot on the E7 — you get 16GB and that’s it.

Nokia announces new C6 and C7 Symbian^3 handsets with 8 megapixel cameras, 720p video

Nokia’s just rolled a couple of candybar handsets out of its bakery, aiming to seduce new users to its next big platform, Symbian^3. The Nokia C6-01 features an 8 megapixel camera and a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with all-new ClearBlack Display (CBD) technology from the Finnish company — touted to deliver better outdoor visibility. The 3.5-inch (also AMOLED) C7 gets more memory than its family mate and a stainless steel body, which Anssi Vanjoki thinks makes it the sleekest device in the world, “no doubt about it.” Both handsets can record pixel-heavy 720p video and both will ship some time later this year, with estimated pre-tax prices of €260 ($334) and €335 ($430), respectively. Full PR after the break.

Samsung’s i8700 Windows Phone 7 handset goes through the video leak ritual

It’s well known around these parts that if you aspire to be a highly desirable smartphone, you have to leak out in three clearly delineated stages: pictures, video, and specs. We’ve seen the i8700 a couple of times already now, and the specs can probably be extrapolated from Windows Phone 7’s stringent hardware profiles, but the video, that was the bit that was missing. Until now, of course. Slide past the break to see it smoothly sailing through the now familiar WP7 interface. The video’s focus is soft, but it won’t get in the way of seeing some truly buttery processing of touch input.

[Thanks, Eggo]

Canon G12 arrives, brings HD video with it

Nikon came gunning for the Canon G11 with the new Coolpix P7000, and now Canon’s firing right back with the updated G12. The big news here is the addition of 720p HD video, which patches up one of the biggest omissions from the G11, but just keeps par with Nikon’s offering — a proper 1080p mode here would have made this decision pretty easy. Otherwise things are just welcome iterative improvements: the backside-illuminated HS System 10 megapixel CCD sensor, 5x lens with teleconverter, DIGIC 4 processor, and 2.8-inch 461k-dot articulated LCD remain the same, but now you get new Canon’s Hybrid IS system from the S95 for better macro performance, along with a new HDR mode for all your ultra-trendy hyperrealistic shots. It’ll be $499 when it hits in early October — we’re looking forward to putting this guy through its paces. Full PR after the break!

Canon SX30IS packs a 35x zoom with auto framing for the casual paparazzo

Canon point-and-shoots usually chug along on a pretty iterative update cycle, but the new SX30IS takes a pretty major leap — it now packs a crazy 24-840mm 35x wide angle zoom, which Canon says is a first on a point and shoot. That monster lens is backed by a 14.1 megapixel sensor with a 720p movie mode and a DIGIC 4 processor, along with a new zoom framing assist system that lets you push in to nail your subject on the 2.7-inch LCD and then back out again. Not bad for $429 when it hits later this month — we’ll have to see how well that lens does at max range, but if it’s any good at all this thing is destined to become very popular indeed. PR after the break.

Rahul Sood sees an awesome, but distant future for webOS devices

Rahul Sood, founder of Voodoo PC and current innovation tzar at HP, has some good and some bad news for us. On the one hand, the way he sees webOS development from the inside of the HP Palm coupling makes Rahul believe that “everyone will want in once the presentation of hardware is in front of them,” but then on the other, far less happy hand, he urges us to abandon hope of seeing that happen soon. We can’t know for sure what his definition of “soon” might be, but it does suggest webOS 2.0 will likely be a pure software drop later this year, to be followed by HPalm finally unveiling the hot new gear sometime in 2011. Although that’s basically what we were expecting anyway, we can’t help but wonder why it’s taking so long to churn out some new devices — it’s not like they’re being made out of unobtainium… or are they, Rahul?
