The Apple iPod: 275 million customers served

This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but no less significant — Apple’s sold 275 million of those ubiquitous white earbuds since it swallowed the portable audio market whole a few years back. Oh, and it might have shifted a few tons of MP3 players, too.

Apple demoes iOS 4.2, features AirPlay media streaming

Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple’s redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video to your i-device over WiFi (with an iPad even acting as host for the new Apple TV). Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print Center applet that sits in the dock and lets you manage your print jobs. It might not be sexy, but it’s certainly a welcome addition to iOS. Apple will be launching iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices in November.

Apple announces iOS 4.1

Apple’s just announced iOS 4.1 boasting a number bug fixes and some pretty notable additions. Those fixes include remedies for the proximity sensor issue, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance, while the new features include High Dynamic Range photos, HD video uploads over WiFi, TV show rentals, and, at long last, Game Center. That latter bit is pretty much what we’ve been seeing all along, and boasts a range of new capabilities for multiplayer gaming including the ability to challenge friends, keep track of scores, and new ways to find games — of which there will be some pretty interesting new ones that take advantage of the added capabilities. Look for the update to hit iTunes sometime next week as a free download for your iPhone or iPod touch.

Apple ships 120 million iOS devices since iPhone’s launch

Steve Jobs just dropped a few numbers on us. Firstly, that big one above, 120 million iOS devices — that’s iPhones, iPod touches and iPads, for the forgetful in the class — have been shipped since the original iPhone made its grand debut back in 2007. 230,000 is the next number of significance — that’s the tally of daily iOS activations. Moving down to even more granular stats, Apple says 200 apps are being downloaded every second, which has resulted in the mind-bending 6.5 billion total downloads of iOS applications. This is from a catalog of over 250,000 total apps, with 25,000 of them being available for the iPad. Yeah, Apple’s just blowing its horn, but it sure is a big one, isn’t it?

PS Jailbreak Goes Open Source as PSGroove

psgroove.jpg
Despite a temporary victory stopping PS Jailbreak sales in Australia, Sony’s PS3 headaches are far from over. With PS Jailbreak’s code in the wild, lawsuits may be too little too late.

PSGroove claims to be an open source PS Jailbreak. Users download the code and install it on an AT90USBkey or Teensy++ USB development board to get the modchip up and running.

While the PSGroove is not as easy as the PS Jailbreak for the average gamer, but an entrepreneurial hacker can easy sell pre-assembled PSGroove kits to the average Joe PS3.

A USB drive, PS Jailbreak lets you run unsigned software, including legitimate backups, on the PS3. You can run the backups from the internal hard disk drive, or use PS Jailbreak to backup the games to external storage devices. Once saved, you can run the games from the external drive as well. Despite the lawsuit in Australia, PS Jailbreak is already available in Canada, US, and Europe.

With this code, you don’t even need the original game disc anymore to play. Imagine emulators to the PS3. The possibilities are endless. What’s next, Sony?

Sony: PlayStation 3 Blu-ray 3D update due in October

Despite what we’d heard before, Sony announced today at IFA that the firmware update bringing 3D Blu-ray playback to the PlayStation 3 will not arrive this month, instead pushed back to October which, we are told, is an entire 30 days away. until then we’ll have to live with the recent MotorStorm 3D game that recently popped up on PSN and a slightly-lower res version of Wipeout. Unfortunately, there still aren’t many movies to watch for the time being, and even the most ardent early adopters may want to wait until Sony rolls out the Michael Jackson’s This Is It – 3D Enhanced Edition and Alice in Wonderland 3D bundles it also announced. For the rest of us, we’ll probably still be firmly planted on the fence by the time the Green Hornet and Spiderman movies mentioned on stage come to disc.

3D Sony Vaio landing next year, we preview the prototype

See this computer here? Yeah, well Sony’s going to launch a laptop next year that will most likely look nothing like this. Intrigued? We thought you would be. Sony announced today that it will be launching at least one laptop next year (probably a mini-series of ’em) with a 3D-capable 240Hz LCD. The laptop will be using a built-in IR blaster to sync with your regular Bravia shutter glasses, but it’s unclear whether the price of a laptop will get you a free pair of the precious specs. The prototype we got to look at here has a 16-inch 16:9 display, housed in a current F series chassis, but all that is of course subject to change when the final model lands. We do have to say, in comparison to some of the other 3D laptops we’ve seen, Sony’s tech comes off looking pretty good, but there’s nothing here to convince us this is anything beyond a niche luxury for now — although an ability to use this screen as a 3D display for our PS3 might help us change our mind (we asked, the answer is no). Expect to hear more about this mysterious beast at next year’s CES.
