Mozilla’s Seabird phone concept teaches us how to dream

Look up, peasant, from your soot-stained hands. Drop that shovel into the furrowed ground and gaze upon the magic* that Mozilla has wrought. Concept designer Billy May, working through Mozilla’s “Open Web Concept Phone” project, has gathered community feedback and followed up on some rather mundane visions for the mobile future with this little beauty, the Mozilla Seabird. The completely fictional device has a disturbing initial resemblance to a BlackBerry Storm, but as the video unfolds the functionality is really what sells this thing. The big innovation is the use of dual pico projectors on the side of the handset, which can provide different functionality based on the phone’s orientation: flat on a table they pump out the two halves of a QWERTY keyboard, up on a dock they offer the dual purpose of a large viewing screen above and a seamless projected keyboard below. Other features, like the pop-out wireless pointer / Bluetooth headset are slightly less realistic but no less charming. Now, before you get too excited, you should know that Mozilla has no plans to build this or any phone, they’re just messing around with some fancy 3D software and the bright imagination of their community of users. Still, for the two minutes and thirty seven seconds that the video after the break unfolds, allow yourself to think: “What if?”

*Actually, it’s just a 3D render.

Epson rolls out new 3LCD projectors for budgets big and medium

Since it’s CEDIA time, Epson has seen fit to unveil several new 1080p projectors, ranging from price brackets in the (reasonable for this crowd) sub-$7,000 category with the new Pro Cinema 6100 to the Home Cinema 8350 which comes in at less than $1,300. The Pro Cinema 6100 (above) debuts the company’s new 3LCD Reflective and UltraBlack tech courtesy of a dual-layered auto iris that is its first to reach dynamic contrast ratios of up to 1,000,000:1, while the Pro Cinema 31000 and Home Cinema 21000 beamers feature similar lens technology with appropriately lower-end chipsets, stats and prices when all of them ship in December. The next jump down is the Home Cinema 8350 and 8700UB models that eschew the new HDMI 1.4 ports and more exotic lens technology of the higher end models while still bringing improved specs over last year’s lineup to retailer shelves when they ship later this month. Detailed specs follow after the break if you’re wondering just how far an extra dollar or two will go.

Windoro: Like a Roomba…For Windows…That Climbs Wall

StyleCowboys.nl | Windoro Robot to Clean your Windows from Stylecowboys on Vimeo.

Meet your new friend Windoro. He’s a bit like your old friend Roomba, only he can wash windows and climb walls. Pretty neat, right?

Windoro only exists in a lab in South Korea right now–he was created by that country’s Pohang Institute of Intelligent Robotics. But hey, if Roomba can hit store shelves everywhere, than surely Windoro will see the neon light of Wal-Mart store shelves one day too, right?

As Gizmodo points out, the Windoro in the above video is actually made up of two units connected via neodymium magnets. The magnets work on glass up to 0.98 inches thick.

Pain in the glass? Windoro bot does your windows

Roomba and other robots can clean your floors. But what about those windows? South Korea’s Windoro takes up the challenge.

Panasonic, Charlotte Motor Speedway team up for the biggest HD screen ever

It’s been a bad week for Jerry Jones. Not only are the Cowboys 0-2, but Panasonic and Charlotte Motor Speedway have announced plans to take away his record for the largest HD video screen anywhere. Scheduled to debut in May 2011, the 720p, 16,000 sq ft (200 feet wide, 80 feet tall, 165,000 lbs, more specs are in the press release after the break) LED video wall will be installed along the backstretch between turns 2 and 3 at the race track allowing fans seated on the frontstretch to still see drivers shake and bake all the way around the track. A quick perusal of Wikipedia’s list of top videoboards reminds of former contenders for the title — massive screens at stadiums hosting the Kansas City Royals, Tokyo horse racing, Longhorns football and Miami Dolphins will all drop one more notch on the list.

ThinkGeek Gives iPhone Users a Physical Keyboard

ThinkGeek TK-421 iPhone Case and KeyboardOne of the biggest complaints people have about the iPhone is the lack of a physical keyboard. It was one of the reasons people said the iPhone would never sell, and still one of the reasons why some people refuse to buy one.  Lot of people have complained about it, but ThinkGeek decided to do something with the launch of the TK-421 iPhone Case and Flip-Out Keyboard, invented and designed at ThinkGeek.

The TK-421 comes in two flavors, one for the iPhone 4 and one for the 3GS, and both of them keep your iPhone sides and back covered when you use the touch-screen or take calls, but when you want to type on the screen or send an e-mail, simply swivel your iPhone up and over the built-in keyboard hidden in the back of the case. The hinge on the side of the case has a magnetic clasp to keep it in place when open or shut, and pairs with your iPhone using Bluetooth so it can be used with any application.

The case features a rechargeable battery that can recharge via USB, and will start shipping in mid-November for $49.99. ThinkGeek isn’t taking pre-orders, but is taking sign-ups if you want to be notified when the TK-421 goes on sale.

Verbatims Clip-It USB Drive is a High-Tech Paper Clip

Verbatim Clip-It USB DrivesAt first blush, the new Verbatim Store n’ Go Clip-it USB Drive is a great way to include a bit more information with something like a business card, a folder full of documents for a meeting or presentation, or a media kit at a conference (I’m betting we’ll see these at CES in January.) The more you think about it, however, doesn’t including a USB drive full of documents connected to a document kind of defeat the purpose of printing the documents in the first place?

Verbatim doesn’t think so, and suggests using the new Clip-it drives like paper clips, to keep documents together, regardless of whether those documents are electronic or paper. The Clip-it USB Drives are available in seven different colors, and in 2GB and 4GB flavors. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.

Yahoo Messenger for Vista Beta Includes Voice SMS

This article was written on May 01, 2008 by CyberNet.

Yahoo Messenger is the number one instant messaging service, and they are really starting to show off the talent their development team has. It’s been over a year now since we first got a glimpse of what their Vista-specific messenger looked like. And disappointingly a lot of time has passed since it was last updated causing debate as to whether the project was still alive.

About two months ago they assured us that a new version was on the way, and they weren’t lying! The Yahoo Messenger blog announced today that the app has entered the Beta stage, and is ready to be downloaded. I have to admit that they have added some really nice features to this version, and it’s definitely not lacking in the eye candy department. Here’s an overview of what’s new:

  • Voice
    – Voice (PC2PC & Phone In/ Phone Out)
    – Voice Visualizations (including WPF 3D integration)
    – SMS
    – Integrated text/voice window for easier navigation
    – Keypad-only mode for quick, simple phone calls
  • Matrix Mode Conversation Window
  • Mail Alerts
  • Additional features and enhancements:
    – New and Optimized for Vista
    – WPF Interface
    – Skin Chooser
    – Customizable Contact List
    – Vector-based
    – Tabbed Conversations
    – Windows Sidebar Gadget

So the big news would have to be the voice support and SMS messaging. The video below shows the cool visualizations that users see when they are engaged in a voice conversation, and it’s pretty slick if I may say so myself. The SMS messaging is something that I really like. When you send a message to one of your friends using SMS it will automatically direct the replies back to the messenger, which eliminates the need to grab your cellphone. Very smart!

Kudos to the Yahoo Messenger team on a job well done, and I’m thinking the only thing this lacks now is video support.

PSA: Sony says counterfeit PS3 controllers could explode

We’re not sure why anyone would buy a knock-off DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS gamepad, considering the trouble Sony’s taken to make sure they don’t work, but the PlayStation 3 manufacturer has another reason you might want to steer clear of counterfeit pads — they could be tiny Li-ion bombs poised to explode. Talk about force feedback! Yes, the company that brought us exploding laptop batteries says that third-party products “which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation(R)3 wireless controllers” may burst into flame, and as you might expect, Sony suggests that you run out to your nearest retailer and purchase the real deal instead.
