Apple’s Q4 earnings are out, records set for revenue, earnings, and sales (Update: earnings call liveblog!)

Another Apple earnings report, another winner quarter for the company. Apple says its 2010 fiscal fourth quarter results are its “highest revenue and earnings ever,” with records set for Mac, iPhone and iPad sales. Some of the highlight numbers include 14.1 million iPhones sold (up 91 percent over Q4 last year), 3.89 million Macs (up 27 percent), 9.05 million iPods (down 11 percent), and 4.19 million iPads. It all added up to an all-time record for Apple of $20.34 billion in revenue for a net profit of $4.31 billion. And of course, Apple couldn’t resist stoking the upcoming-event-rumor flames a little bit: “We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year.” Hit up the press release after the break. The earnings call is starting in a few minutes, we’ll be liveblogging it right here!

PlayStation 3 Netflix update hitting XMBs across the USA, say goodbye to the discs

As promised, the new discless Netflix app for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is rolling out across the land, so all should see a convenient icon under the video tab on the XMB, leading directly to movies in 1080p with 5.1 audio. As for those old discs? Just in case you were feeling attached to the old way of doing things there is a 31 day transition period before they expire and stop working completely, however our tipster informs us once he downloaded the app he was never able to use the disc again. It certainly seems like an easy trade, but you may want to consider… nothing, there’s absolutely nothing to consider. Click the X button to download, then enjoy your new coaster and National Chocolate Cupcake Day. No, really.

[Thanks, Chris]

Droid 2 Global ads now running on Verizon’s 800 number

Whoever said being on hold was a bad thing? Verizon customers who call in and get stuck in limbo right now are being treated to a minor device scoop: an ad for the mythical Droid 2 Global, which has leaked out here and there but hasn’t yet been officially announced. The ad doesn’t reveal much apart from the existence of the CDMA / GSM slider and the fact that it’ll work in 221 countries, but that’s all we needed to hear — listen for yourself after the break.

Update: Ha, as commenter Spider-Man points out below, that 221 number is mighty suspect, as there are only between 191-195 countries in the world today, depending on how you count them. Sounds like Verizon needs to take this one back to the studio. Thanks, Spidey!

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Nintendo in the US: A Brief History

super_mario_cake.jpg

The Nintendo Entertainment System turns 25 today. The October 18, 1985 launch of the system was pretty unassuming–particularly in light of the game changer the console would become after it received a wide release in February the following year.

Nintendo did a bit of a trial run on this day, a quarter of a century ago, releasing seventeen titles in New York City, including such future classics as Duck Hunt, Donkey Kong Jr., and Excitebike.

In honor of this occasion (and to make you feel even older than you already do), here’s a quick tour of Nintendo’s first 25 years in the USA.

Verizon’s tiered data plans hitting October 28, smartphones still getting unlimited option?

We’d told you back in July that Verizon would migrate away from unlimited data and toward a tiered model very quickly; turns out it wasn’t quite as quickly as we’d thought, but as Ivan Seidenberg said last month, it’s still going down. We’ve now been tipped that the switchover is expected on October 28, and this is how it all shakes out:

  • Smartphone owners will choose between $15 for 150MB with $0.10 / MB overage, or $29.99 for unlimited access. This stands in contrast to AT&T, which offers another 50MB (for a total of 200MB) at the $15 price level or 2GB for $25 with no unlimited option.
  • As we’ve already seen with the MiFi-equipped iPad, there’ll be $20, $35, and $50 tablet plans for 1GB, 3GB, and 5GB, respectively, all with overage of $10 per gigabyte. There will also be a $80 plan for 10GB with the same overage rate.
  • MiFi, FiveSpot, and integrated netbook / notebook modem owners will choose between $50 / 5GB and $80 / 10GB plans. The MiFi and FiveSpot will also have access to the tablet-centric $35 / 3GB plan as part of a 90-day promo. All of these plans have overage priced at 1GB for $10.
  • Feature phones will need to choose between $1.99 “pay as you go” (though it’s not clear what that means — could be unlimited at $1.99 per day, but we really don’t know), $15 for 150MB, or $29.99 for unlimited. The old $9.99 / 25MB option will be killed off.
  • USB modem pricing remains unchanged at $39.99 for 250MB or $59.99 for 5GB. We’d say this means Big Red is strongly discouraging folks from buying these right now.

Notably, this is just 3G data pricing — the company says it’ll announce 4G plans closer to the launch of its 4G network. Existing customers can stay grandfathered on their existing plans if they so choose, just as AT&T’s been playing it. Thing is, the fact that Verizon is preserving its unlimited smartphone option is a big deal — it’ll be interesting to see if it twists AT&T’s arm hard enough to bring it back. Follow the break for Verizon’s full internal Q&A.

[Thanks, Jay]

Update: We’re being told that the $1.99 pay as you go option on feature phones is simply the current $1.99 / MB option. Thanks, anonymous tipster!

Is Google Failing to Innovate?

This article was written on March 11, 2008 by CyberNet.

innovation Yesterday we watched as Google Stock hit a new 52 week low of $413.04. It was just on February 8th when they closed below $500 and now they’re coming way too close to that below $400 mark. Luckily for Google, the European Union just approved the buyout of DoubleClick (the U.S. already gave their stamp of approval) and Google stock was headed back up this morning on that news. We looked at some of Google’s competitors and it looks like some of them also had a rough day yesterday, but it got us thinking about Google and if they’re failing to innovate and thus failing to impress investors?

From many angles it looks as though Google is all about innovation. They look for great ideas all over the World and acquire them when found. They give employees about one day a week to develop their own project which screams innovation. And speaking of employees, they’re able to attract some of the best of the best out there. There’s no doubt that they’ve got loads of talent. Up until recently, the effort that they have made to be innovative has helped them push their way over the $700 dollar mark per share. Investors were impressed and jumped on the Google-wagon.

So what has happened over the last few months? There are multiple opinions on this one with some saying that it’s simply the economy while others say that every stock has its ups and downs and this is just one of those down times for Google. One idea to consider though is that Google simply isn’t doing enough new innovation to impress the investors and keep them pumping money into Google.

Recently I stumbled upon a list over at Google titled “Ten things Google has found to be true.” There were two things on the list that really stood out:

  • It’s best do do one thing really, really well (#2)
  • Great just isn’t good enough (#10)

They say that their one thing is search, and it is. They’re great with search, there’s no doubt about that. So then why is it that they’re branching off and trying too many different things that end up being just okay and not great? They also say great just isn’t good enough and that they need to always deliver more than expected. “Through innovation and iteration, Google takes something that works well and improves upon it in unexpected ways.” As of late, they really haven’t delivered more than expected.

Whether Google stock is dropping because of the economy or it’s dropping because investors haven’t seen enough innovation, one thing is for sure and that is that Google stock owners are probably getting a little nervous as this point! And if you don’t own Google stock, hey, now might not be a bad time to buy.

Android-based Archos 43 PMP up for pre-order, should ship out soon

Archos swore up and down that this one was set to ship in “mid-October,” which means that the pre-order link at Amazon should switch over in a matter of nanoseconds, minutes or hours. For those in need of a refresher, the Archos 43 is an Android-based portable media player with a 4.3-inch touchpanel, support for a zillion (give or take) file formats, an HDMI output and integrated WiFi. The 16GB model is available to claim for $249.99, so if you’ve been waiting for your chance to hop in the purchase line, this is it. Don’t blow it.
