Microchips Help Deter Amazon Deforestation

Amazon rain forest.jpg

Deforestation is a big problem in the Amazon rain forest, the largest such forest in the world, and now technology is being used to help fight the issue. Amazonian trees are being implanted with microchips in order to prevent illegal logging.

Each chip contains a variety of useful information, including the location and size of the tree. This information gives those who buy the wood the knowledge of where it came from and who cut it down. With this information buyers can determine whether or not the tree was cut down by an illegal logging operation. The hope is that the technology will help deter such activity.

“People talk a lot these days about wood coming from sustainable forestry practices–this is a system that can prove it,” forestry engineer Paulo Borges told Reuters.

The 10 Most Powerful Tweets of 2010

Top10Tweets.jpg

The latest addition to Twitter’s #Hingsight2010 is the list of the The Top Ten Most Powerful Tweets of 2010. To compile the list, the Twitter team reviewed tweets about the biggest news stories and international events from this past year and chose tweets best that represent the dynamic ways that people use Twitter in the political world, for disaster relief, and to add commentary to news events, sports and entertainment. With over 25 billion sent in 2010 and a boat load of major, important, and shocking events to choose from, the folks at twitter picked out the ten most “powerful.” When answering the question: “What makes a tweet powerful?” on its blog, Twitter responded by saying, “Powerful Tweets have impact, relevance and resonance. In just 140 characters, you can change the game, make a difference in someone’s life, offer perspective, or bring aid to people in need.”

You can decide if you agree that the 10 tweets Twitter chose are the most powerful from this entire year, or not.

Vatican City: The Greenest Place On Earth

Vatican City solar.jpg

It’s no secret that the Pope likes his green tech, and it looks like the rest of Vatican City does as well. It may be the smallest nation on Earth, but it turns out that it’s also the greenest.

The tiny state garnered the green label after a recent solar panel installation, which raised the solar energy production per capita to a staggering 200 watts per resident. That’s more than double the next highest country, Germany, which manages 80 watts per person. According to Vatican City representatives, the solar installation has saved the nation the equivalent of 90 tons of oil.

The photovoltaic solar installation cost an estimated $600 million and takes up 740 acres. It joins a rooftop installation on Paul VI’s conference hall, which was installed two years ago.

Amazon MP3 app hits BlackBerry phones

It may not quite be enough to bring non-BlackBerry users into the fold, but RIM has finally scored one long awaited coup to keep its current users happy — it’s just announced that the Amazon MP3 application is now available for download from the BlackBerry App World. While still technically in beta, the app will let you purchase and download music both over WiFi and over the air, and it includes plenty of BlackBerry-specific functionality, including sharing via BBM in addition to the usual social networking features, and full integration with BlackBerry’s Universal Search and Media Library. Hit up the link below for a closer look, or simply download it yourself to try it out first hand — it is free, after all.

Gmail Architect Predicts Death of Chrome

Cr-48_appstore.JPG

Paul Buchheit created and served as the lead developer for Gmail. He also developed AdSense and is the guy who coined the company’s “Don’t be evil” motto. Bucheit left the company to found FriendFriend, which was later acquired by Facebook.

Since Google doesn’t sign his checks anymore, Buchheit can feel free to talk a bit of smack about the company’s current projects–projects like Chrome. Buchheit used his Twitter account this week to suggest the upcoming death of Google’s latest baby, “Prediction: ChromeOS will be killed next year (or ‘merged’ with Android).”

Buckheit went deeper in a FriendFeed post, writing,

ChromeOS has no purpose that isn’t better served by Android (perhaps with a few mods to support a non-touch display). I was thinking, “is this too obvious to even state?”, but then I see people taking ChromeOS seriously, and Google is even shipping devices for some reason.

Google has largely insisted that the two operating systems serve different markets. But, as TechCrunch points out, Sergey Brin himself has suggested that the company will someday focus on a single OS.

Microsoft lands its largest ever Surface order… from a karaoke bar (update: new video)

There’s not much to see right now, but it appears that Red MR is well on its way to becoming one of the most advanced (and probably the most amusing) karaoke bars in the world. Ahead of its Hong Kong debut this Saturday, said company has already installed six Surfaces in its two bars, and is aiming to fit more to fill up all 80 rooms — and that number could go up to 300 in the near future — once Microsoft has ramped up production. With Red MR’s customized software (still under wraps), customers will be able to pick songs, order food, watch TV, and play games on the Surface while listening to a drunk rendition of My Heart Will Go On. Oh, and there’ll also be a few Kinects dotted around the bars, but it’s not exactly clear whether they’ll be in the rooms as well. Anyhow, we’ll be flying out to Hong Kong to check it out later this week, so stay tuned. For now, you can watch a demo of the Surface’s Liar’s Dice game after the break.

Update: Our friends over at M.I.C Gadget found a video from Apple Daily that teases the karaoke UI. Have a look after the jump.

TSA Makes Indian Diplomat Remove Turban

hardeep_singh_puri_303996f.jpg

Hardeep Puri was held by security for half an hour, subjected to a pat down, and asked to remove his turban. The whole process would have been embarrassing enough for the poor traveler, but Puri isn’t just anyone, he’s India’s ambassador to the United Nations.

The incident follows a similar one on December 4th, which India’s external affairs minister Meera Shankar was subjected to a pat down at a Mississippi airport.

India’s external affairs minister S.M. Krishna told the press, “We have taken it up with the U.S. authorities and the matter is at that stage.” After the Shankar incident, Krishna said, “Let me be frank. This is unacceptable to India. We are going to take it up with the government of the United States so that such unpleasant incidents do not recur.”

The Department of Homeland Security called the Shankar patdown, “appropriate under the circumstances,” but U.S. secretary of state Hillary Clinton later apologized to India.

Russian Yo hybrid said to offer 67mpg, cost under $15k, gets a billionaire's backing

Russian entrepreneur Mikhail D. Prokhorov may have big plans for moving the Nets downtown and turning them into the Brooklyn New Yorkers, but another of his big plans will stay a little closer to home. Well, his home anyway. It’s the ë, the Cyrillic character “yo,” and a funky name for a recently revealed hybrid that has scored the billionaire’s support. The ë is a little four-door, four-seater car with a top speed of 80mph and a range of 680 miles, delivered by a hybrid powertrain with two electric motors and a single internal combustion lump. However, unlike the parallel hybrid Prius and the (mostly) series hybrid Volt, both of which rely on expensive and heavy battery packs, the ë will only be able to hold a small charge. Instead the engine, which uses a rotary vane design, will run continuously, spinning a generator and providing the current to turn the wheels. It’s an unusual layout for a car, but if it can deliver its supposed 67mpg at its proposed $14,500 MSRP when it’s slated to hit the streets of St. Petersburg in 2012, you can call us converts — and comrades.
