Panasonic officially launches exclusive Avatar Blu-ray 3D pack-in, discs hit $400+ on eBay
Posted in: 3d tv, blu-ray, exclusive, hdtv, Panasonic, Today's ChiliPanasonic has finally made official several pack-in deals already in effect at retailers both physical and online that add Blu-ray 3D players, glasses and most notably, an exclusive copy of Avatar on Blu-ray 3D (also available to existing owners via a mail-in offer, owners of the Extended Collectors Edition can preview a 3D Easter Egg there too.) Despite being the highest grossing 3D movie of all, it’s still not available at retail and is unlikely to show up there anytime soon, sending the price of those pack-in copies skyrocketing on eBay as owners of non-Panasonic 3D capable TVs try to get their hands on the ultimate demo material. Many current auctions are above the $200 mark, while the highest sold price we saw was $399 about a week ago, although considering a copy of Bee Movie went for $400 back in the day, we can’t say we’re too surprised. Check out the details about Panasonic’s current promotions on its highly rated HDTVs (and the demo tour that just started) in the press release after the break and bring your calculator, if Dances With Smurfs wasn’t your cup of tea anyway, we might have found the perfect way to finance your new home theater upgrade.

Laptop data plans: comparing LTE, WiMAX, and HSPA+ by speed, price, and value
Posted in: 4G, att, hspa, lte, pricing, Sprint, t-mobile, Today's Chili, usb, verizon, Verizon Wireless, VerizonWireless, vzw, WiMAXNow that Verizon’s gone official with its LTE pricing for an initial launch in some 38 markets this Sunday, we wanted to take a quick look at how it compares to the other players in the laptop data market — after all, how much you’re paying month to month can be just as big of a determining factor (if not a bigger one) in choosing a carrier than the speeds you’re seeing. So how do Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, Clear, and Rover stack up? Let’s break it down.

Daily Gift: PaperJamz Guitars
Posted in: guitar, Today's ChiliIf you’ve got a kid or teen on your holiday list, chances are pretty good that they’ve got one these faux musical instruments on theirs. Paper Jamz are likely to be one of the hottest gifts this holiday season, thanks in no small part to the continued success of games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and all of their various manifestations.
So, what exactly are Paper Jamz? They’re flat, plastic toy guitars with built-in circuit chips, which let you “play” them by holding down chords and strumming their painted strings. The guitars also come pre-loaded with pop songs.
Best of all, they’re relatively cheap–you can pick up most of the guitars for around $20 through retail sites like Amazon. Paper Jamz manufacturer WowWee also makes a guitar amp and a drumset, so kids can get their full fake band on.

Happy Hanukkah! Tonight is the first of the eight-day holiday, so tune in to the first half of the show as Wilson and I try our best to explain to Jeff what that means.
On today’s show we take a look at Dance Central for the Microsoft Kinect, and offer our sincerest opinions on the best printers, scary PC games, and books! Yes, we’re actually learning how to read.
Verizon announced its 4G data plans, but it’s not going to come cheap. The “Gs” refer to the speed a mobile device can receive and send data, so 4G will enable Web pages, videos, and e-mails to load faster. Carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile already have 4G data infrastructure in place, but don’t expect the same speeds on every carrier.
Starting December 5, Verizon’s 4G service will cost $50 for just 5GB a day, $80 nets you 10GB of data, and it’s $10 per gigabyte if you go over the limit. The company claims that 70 percent of its 38 markets will gain access to 4G on Sunday, and users can connect with a laptop through a USB modem.
Microsoft’s Kinect motion controller accessory is already boasting bigger sales than than the Sony PlayStation Move, having reached 4.1 million dollars in sales worldwide since launching three months ago.
Jeff and Wilson were skeptics when they first saw the controller in action, but Dance Central changed it around for the Bakalar house and now they’re hooked. And if all goes right with a hack we’re working on, keep a lookout for a YouTube video of that on the show. In the meantime, check out this Kinect joyride fail video and let us know what you think!

Verizon LTE / 4G preview with the LG VL600 modem
Posted in: 4G, impressions, LG, lte, preview, Today's ChiliWe’ve just gotten our hands on the less-insane version of Verizon’s LTE modems, the LG VL600. The company timed the shipment of these puppies to coincide with today’s announcement of the coming 4G onslaught, set to begin December 5th — which based on what we’ve seen thus far is going to be beyond awesome. Unless you’re on a Mac (more on that after the break).
In case you haven’t seen the device in question, it’s a rather large (we mean seriously large) USB dongle, which thankfully comes with a clip and extra cable. Like all LTE devices, it uses a SIM which will look familiar to those in GSM devices, but is — again — almost comically large.

We haven’t spent a load of time with the modem, but in the few short hours we’ve had to play with the device, the down- and upstream speeds we’re getting are nothing short of phenomenal. In Brooklyn, which we’re not even sure is really heavily covered by the LTE blanket (and was being battered by rain and wind at the time of testing), we saw consistent speeds which peaked at 7 Mbps down, and over 1 Mbps up. Overall, speeds held steady around 5 to 6 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up. By comparison, we saw around 4 Mbps down and less than 1 Mbps up when we did some testing with Sprint’s WiMAX Overdrive 4G, and roughly 6.5 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up with Clear’s iSpot.
Overall, browsing on our computer felt nearly identical to our home broadband, and even HD video playback on YouTube was snappy and responsive over the network. And did we mention we were only getting two out of four bars on our connection?
Update: We’ve added a link to SlashGear‘s hands-on of the modem below. As you can see, speeds vary by area, and SG was pulling 12 Mbps downstream and more than 5 Mbps up — impressively matching Verizon’s claimed numbers.
Update 2: With a little more testing, we’re seeing speeds closer to Verizon’s estimates. We’ve added a second image after the break, and as you can see, we’re nabbing over 10 Mbps downstream and nearly 4 Mbps up.

There are a couple of ways to get my attention with a press release. First, you can quote The Big Lebowski in the subject line. You can also give your product a truly bizarre name. Congratulations, Brick House Security, the “Nobody F’s With the Jesus” e-mail you sent out for your GPS Jesus Program got my attention.
GPS Jesus is the name of a program aimed at protecting nativity scenes. Brick House is donating GPS devices for communities to place in baby Jesuses to help curb stolen nativity scenes.
The company worked with 30 communities in the program last year and will be expanding out to 100 for 2010. “There’s been no attempt of theft since we announced that we’re tracking our Jesus,” Alan Czyewski of St. Ambrose Church, Old Bridge, N.J. is quoted as saying in the aforementioned press release. “This is our third year, and we love this. People are now well aware of our GPS Jesus, so they leave it alone.”
