Toyota to launch social network for people who like to befriend car dealerships

Man, social networks have taken on a loose definition as of late, haven’t they? Toyota just announced plans to launch one for its customers, and while our initial reaction was an eye-roll and sighs of “what the world needs now,” the truth is that it’s really just a system that uses Twitter and Facebook to let you know when something’s amiss. Dubbed Toyota Friend (and built on Salesforce.com’s private Chatter network), the service will dish up battery power warnings to electric vehicle owners, along with maintenance tips — advice that can pop up on phones, tablets, and “other advanced mobile devices.” In addition to their friendly neighborhood car dealerships, folks can befriend other cars and the friends and family who own them, though it’s unclear from the press release below why you’d care. (Okay, we suppose if we had a teenage driver we might want to know if they were about to break curfew.) If that all sounds like bunk, you probably won’t get a test drive soon, anyway — the service is slated to launch in 2012, in Japan, and, initially, for electric and hybrid vehicle owners only.

AMD announces new, more energy efficient Embedded G-Series APUs

AMD has just rolled out two new additions to its line of Embedded G-Series APUs, combining Fusion-based processing with reduced power consumption. Both the T40E and T40R rock the same 64-bit x86 Bobcat CPU cores and DirectX 11-capable GPUs we’ve already seen in previous G-Series incarnations, but AMD says the pair can operate using thirty-nine percent less power than its cousins. The single core T40R boasts a thermal design power (TDP) rating of just 5.5 watts, while the dual core T40E offers a TDP of 6.4 watts. The two applications are designed for compact fanless systems, including kiosks and mobile industrial devices, though Axiomtek is apparently planning on incorporating the new APUs in a new Pico-ITX consumer PC, as well. Full PR after the break.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G now shipping with Gingerbread? (Update: mistakenly posted)

Lookie here, everyone — we just pointed our browsers over to Sprint’s official online store and if our eyes aren’t deceiving us, the HTC EVO 4G is now shipping with Gingerbread. This is definitely news to us, as we have made some calls out to the brick-and-mortar retail stores with no indication that the carrier’s top-selling phone is currently loaded with anything besides Android 2.2. It’s difficult for us to fathom this being a simple typo, considering it’s mentioned in four separate places, with one of them triumphantly declaring “now with Android 2.3.” We’re still waiting to get official confirmation from Sprint, and we’ll have an update on their response for you as soon as we get our hands on it. In the meantime, take a look at the source link for yourself.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: We received word from Sprint that the inclusion of Gingerbread was an unfortunate mistake, and that it plans to upgrade the EVO 4G as soon as it can.

Rumor Roundup: iPhone 5 to Include Curved Glass, Faster Processor

Apple might be planning to adopt curved glass on the next iPhone, according to a report.

Taiwanese publication DigiTimes claims that Apple has purchased about 300 glass-cutting machines in preparation for producing curved cover glass for the iPhone 5.

It’s unclear what role curved glass would play on an iPhone, though it’s worth noting that the previous-generation iPod Nano used curved glass for its display. Also, MacRumors chief Arnold Kim points out that Samsung’s Nexus S uses a convex curved screen, to improve comfort and perceived usability.

In addition to today’s report about a curved display, publications have claimed the following about the iPhone 5:

  • The handset will debut in September, perhaps during Apple’s annual iPod event.
  • The iPhone 5 will have a flat metal back, instead of the glass on the current iPhone.
  • There’s been some debate about near-field communications technology debuting in the next iPhone, to enable wireless payments with the device at stores. However, we’re skeptical because it would first require merchants to be on board with NFC readers.
  • Likely “under-the-hood” changes include the faster A5 processor currently powering the iPad 2, as well as an 8-megapixel camera sensor designed by Sony.
  • The iPhone 5 will become available on T-Mobile and Sprint, according to some analysts.

Apple does not comment on rumors or speculation.

Multiple publications claim the iPhone 5 will not be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where the company has traditionally introduced new iPhones.

Though it sounds like WWDC will lack an iPhone-hardware announcement, the big news at the event may revolve around an online storage solution that will provide wireless streaming of iTunes music as well as an online storage locker, similar to Dropbox. Multiple publications have reported that this service will be called iCloud.
