Firefox Extension Zotero Drops Beta- Check it out!

This article was written on November 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

When Mozilla put together their Firefox Campus Edition, they included only three extensions with it.  Considering the number of extensions out there, the three that they included were probably chosen carefully. Among them were Foxytunes, StumbleUpon, and Zotero. Zotero is a “must-have” for students and anyone who does web research because it keeps track of and sorts your citations. Recently they dropped the beta tag from their name and launched version 1.0. If you haven’t gotten it yet, go and check it out.  The list of features is lengthy, and I think you’ll be impressed.

For those of you who were already using Zotero, you’ll notice improvements in functionality and stability with the new version, otherwise, everything pretty much remains the same. We’ll quickly re-cap the list of features that they offer (originally mentioned here):

  • Automatic capture of citation information from web pages
  • Storage of PDFs, files, images, links, and whole web pages
  • Flexible notetaking with autosave
  • Fast, as-you-type search through your materials
  • Playlist-like library organization, including saved searches (smart collections) and tags
  • Platform for new forms of digital research that can be extended with other web tools and services
  • Runs right in your web browser
  • Formatted citation export (style list to grow rapidly)
  • Free and open source
  • Shared collections
  • Remote library backup
  • Integration with Microsoft Word and other word processors
  • Access your library from anywhere via the web
  • Advanced search and data mining tools
  • Recommendation engine and RSS feeds
  • Wide variety of import/export options

Zotero would have come in handy if I were still a student. I don’t do enough research to make this extension worth it, but trust me, if you’re a student, it’s worth it! It’s a powerful tool, and you can even use tags! All you have to do to start using Zotero after you’ve downloaded it is look for the Zotero logo at the bottom of your web browser and click it (circled in red below. This image shows what appears:

Google to build a trio of data centers in Asia, earmarks $200 million for expansion

IT specialists in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong better start polishing their resumes, because Google is rolling into town. Yesterday, Big G announced plans to build a brand new data center in each of the three Asian locales, as part of an expansion slated to cost at least $200 million. When completed, these complexes will represent the company’s first fully owned and operated data centers in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific region — where, according to Asia policy communications manager Taj Meadows, Google is “seeing large numbers of new users coming online every day”. The facilities in Hong Kong and Taiwan are expected to cost around $100 million each, though the price tag for the Singapore branch remains a mystery. Big G hopes to finish construction in one to two years, though it didn’t say when it would begin — nor, for that matter, whether seawater tunnels would be involved.

Dell Adds Customer Reviews to PC’s for 23rd Anniversary

This article was written on May 23, 2007 by CyberNet.

Dell 23Dell started out in 1984 and has evolved into the 25th largest company in the United States according to revenue ($56 billion in 2006). Now to celebrate their 23rd anniversary they are offering some great deals, and there is also a new feature I caught a glimpse of.

The new feature is a review system for people who purchase Dell computers. It gives the customers a chance to say what they think of the system, and whether they would recommend it to other people. Like most rating systems it is based on a score of 1 to 5, and the reviews can be found on each computer that they offer (example):

Dell Rating

The first thing that came to my mind was whether Dell would censor the reviews that people submit to make them look good, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. They offer an option to sort the reviews in various ways with one of them being the lowest ratings first. Most of the ratings seem pretty good, but I did manage to find a few that gave only 1 star for the overall. Putting the fairness of the reviews aside, I do like how they laid it out so that people can see the specs from the computers they purchased:

Dell Review

I wasn’t sure when they had launched this feature because there was no mention of it on their Direct2Dell blog, but then in one of the promotional emails I received last night it gave the current ratings for the computers listed. Underneath the ratings it said that they are as of 5/21/07 which I’m guessing means they just started it 2–days ago. In case you’re wondering, here are some of the deals that they mentioned in the email:

You can also head over to http://www.dell.com/23notebooks to try and win a Dell XPS M2010 valued at over $4000. They’re giving one out everyday for 23 days (until June 8th) so you’ll need to check back often. In order to get entered in the drawing you’ll have to complete a quick quiz, but all of the answers are on the “Need a hint” page.

T-Mobile joins Verizon to support Samsung in Apple patent lawsuit

Verizon was the first carrier to come to Samsung’s defense in the company’s patent dispute with Apple, but it’s not the last. As Reuters reports today, T-Mobile has now also sided with Samsung in the lawsuit, stating in a court filing that a sales ban on certain Samsung products would “unnecessarily harm” the carrier and its customers, and that, “at this late date, T-Mobile could not find comparable replacement products for the 2011 holiday season.” The carrier also noted that its ads also “prominently feature” some of the Samsung products in question, and that those investments “cannot be recouped easily.” As for the case itself, the next big date is an October 13th hearing on the injunction request.

Symantec pcAnywhere 12.0 Beta Released

This article was written on December 16, 2005 by CyberNet.

That’s right, Symantec pcAnywhere 12.0 has been released for download! It now supports the Mac OS X for a host or a client. Anyone that has used pcAnywhere before knows of the troubles routers and firewalls can give. To make this simpler they now include pcAnywhere Gateway which will make the configuration of ports and other settings easier.

Of course, tabs seem to be the in thing right now, and Symantec is going to be left behind. You will now be able to open multiple remote sessions at the same time, in multiple tabs!

Sony to stop paying for movie theater 3D glasses, theater owners fire back

As if going to the movies wasn’t getting expensive enough, now theater owners and studios are fighting over the cost of 3D glasses — again. Sony Pictures sent out a letter indicating that starting in May 2012, it won’t foot the bill for moviegoer’s 3D glasses anymore, pushing the charge onto the theater instead. The Hollywood Reporter uncovered the letter and indicates the total pricetag for a major movie like the ones Sony has planned for next summer — Men in Black III and The Amazing Spider-Man — can run as high as $5 to $10 million in total. Studios have been covering the cost to help push 3D so far but Sony’s declaration could lead to other studios following, and changing to a model where moviegoers buy and keep their own 3D glasses. It’d be nice to think keeper pairs could reduce the surcharge — or for 3D haters, switch more showings to 2D — but with a half-full box of candy apparently worth its weight in gold, we’re not optimistic.

Skype 2.5 for Android brings video calls to 14 new devices, including Honeycomb tablets

Skype Video Calling

…And then there were 41.

Oh, sorry, we’re talking about Android devices here. Specifically ones that support video calling over Skype. With the update to version 2.5, the VoIP service has tacked on another 14 Goog-powered gadgets to its list of officially supported handsets and tablets. Yes, that’s right, we said tablets. In addition to bringing support to phones like the Atrix, Bionic and Nexus One, Skype is inviting the Xoom, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Acer’s Iconia to the party. We’ve even received reports that video calls are working on other Honeycomb slates like the ASUS Transformer. You’ll find the full list of officially supported devices in the PR after the break.

2007 CyberNet Awards: Most Innovative Products

This article was written on December 28, 2007 by CyberNet.

Yesterday we took a look at what we consider to be the Most Innovative Services available on the web, and today we’ve got our sights set on products. After some careful deliberation we managed to come up with three amazing products that could drastically change the way we use technology in the future.

The 2007 CyberNet Award for Most Innovative Product goes to…

–3rd Place: Eye-Fi

The Eye-Fi SD memory card is really the first of its kind. What makes it so special is that it has a wireless chip built-in so that you can transfer photos to your computer without ever plugging in a cable.

It’s a little pricey considering the 2GB model will chew up $100 out of your wallet, but the convenience it has to offer is unparalleled.

–2nd Place: Microsoft Surface

Some people shrug off the Microsoft Surface table as another toy that will never see the light of day. From the videos it does seem a little too good to be true, but it will be well received by people when it starts to find its way into hotels, restaurants, and gathering places.

The digital age that we’re in is all about planning for tomorrow, and I think the Microsoft Surface table does just that. It will likely take several years for businesses to start adopting the technology, but I believe it will take off once people start seeing the possibilities the Surface has to offer.

–1st Place: Apple iPhone

We don’t write about Apple products all that much, but that doesn’t mean we don’t recognize good things when we see them. The iPhone has opened up an entirely new market for phones, and since it’s release in the middle of 2007 we’ve seen several touch-screen clones try to eat away at the iPhone’s popularity.

Even if you’re not a big Apple fan I don’t think there is any denying that they did an incredible job of implementing an intuitive multi-touch screen. There are definitely some things that the iPhone lacks, such as a 3G connection and GPS capabilities, but many users are still satisfied with all the other things that it does extremely well. In February developers will be able to begin creating real applications for the iPhone, which will add a new dimension to the device.

–And Your Winners–

Now it is time for you to chime in! Let us know in the comments who earned your “Most Innovative Product” award.
