CyberNotes: Is it a fact? A Tribute to MythBusters

This article was written on June 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Fun Friday

You’ve seen that show MythBusters before, haven’t you? If you haven’t, you’re missing out. It’s a show on the Discovery Channel that focuses on “busting” myths. They take a variety of rumors, popular beliefs, and urban legends, and then put them to the test to see if they’re really facts, or just myths. Today we thought we’d pay tribute to one of our favorite shows and share some popular myths with you. We’ll also include a few quotes from Jamie and Adam (co-hosts of the show, in case you didn’t know).

For those of you that watch, you must have a favorite episode. Let us know which one it is in the comments below. For us, one of our favorites is the “Fingerprints Lock episode” – take a look:

Rumors, Popular Beliefs, and Urban Legends Put to the test…

Are these Fact or Myth?

  1. Many churches have banned rice-throwing at weddings because the little white pellets expand in the stomachs of birds that eat it off the ground, causing them to explode. (Busted) – some churches ban throwing rice because of the threat it poses to humans walking on a littered surface.
  2. A farmer thought he was just putting dinner on the table when he picked up an ax and beheaded one of his chickens. Turned out he had a legend on his hands after the now headless rooster bobbed and weaved back to the henhouse and lived for 18 more months without a head. (Confirmed) – according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
  3. Eating turkey makes you sleepy (Busted) – it’s usually the big and heavy thanksgiving diner that causes one to become sleepy.
  4. Hostess Twinkies never go bad. They have an indefinite shelf life. (Busted) – A twinkies’ actual shelf life is about 25 days, not years.
  5. Coca-Cola originally contained cocaine. (Confirmed) – That’s how it got its name! By 1929, the popular beverage was completely cocaine-free though.
  6. If you go swimming less than an hour after eating, you will get stomach cramps and drown. (Busted) – there are no reported cases of drowning after swimming with a full stomach.
  7. Eating poppy seeds can cause you to fail a drug test – (Confirmed)
  8. The poinsettia plant is highly toxic and can kill a person or pet that eats the leaves. (Busted) this is just a rumor. The worst that could happen is you’d get an upset stomach from eating the plant.
  9. In anticipation of an upcoming wedding, one bridesmaid circumvented time limits on tanning sessions by visiting multiple salons a day over a period of several weeks. When she began to feel unwell, she went to the doctor only to find out that she had cooked her internal organs. (Busted) – tanning lamps emit ultraviolet light waves, and ultraviolet radiation only penetrates one-sixteenth of an inch into your skin — not nearly enough to affect internal organs.
  10. A few years ago, a young man was killed by his own pet python, who mistook his owner for food. (Confirmed) – In 1996, a New York man died after his pet python wrapped itself around him.
  11. The $2 bill was taken out of circulation in 1976 (Busted) – $2 bills are still being printed – over 121 million of them were printed in 2004.
  12. A penny placed on a train track can derail a train. (Busted) – there have been no documented cases of a trail being derailed due to a penny on the tracks.
  13. If you sit too close to the TV, you will ruin your eyes. (Busted) – your eyes may get tired from sitting too close, but you won’t have permanent damage.
  14. The actor who portrayed the “Marlboro Man” in TV and print ads for cigarettes died of lung cancer. (Confirmed) – to date, at least two men portrayed as the “Marlboro Man” have died from lung cancer.
  15. Boiling a cup of water in a microwave can cause it to explode. (Confirmed) – Only under certain circumstances, but it happened enough that the FDA issued a warning regarding it.

Great quotes from Mythbusters…

  • Adam – “I reject your reality, and substitute my own”
  • Tory – “Holy air cannon, Grantman!” Grant: “How long’ve you been waiting to say that? Tory: All day.
  • Adam (goldfish memory episode): “My fish are eating their own poo.”
  • Adam and Jamie – “Remember, don’t try this at home. We’re what you call “experts.”
  • Adam to Jamie – “Come, Silent Walrus, let us storm the castle!”
  • Adam (after something explodes) – “THAT’S what I’m talking about!”
  • Jamie – “Adam, go eat a cookie.”
  • Adam – “So you may think that nothing’s going to happen and come close to the fire, and then BOOM, your head’s engulfed in a fireball, and the next thing you know you’re missing an eyebrow, and I know what that’s like.”

Please Note: All of the above information came from the Mythbusters section on the Discovery Channel website which can be found here.

ASUS TOUGH 7-inch Honeycomb tablet lands in Japan ready for some corporate abuse

Not content with offering up merely modular Android tablets, ASUS has revealed a new seven-inch tablet that’s water and dust resistant — perfect for a spot of bath-time browsing or… desert rallying. The ASUS TOUGH-ETBW11AA has a rubberized bezel and strips across the back, contributing to the substantial 22.2mm profile, but that hefty frame can survive drops from the heady height of 76cm. Aside from its tough-guy credentials, there’s a 1280 x 800 screen, five megapixel camera, Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor, WiMAX connection and the staple WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS medley. It comes with 16GB of well-protected storage, but there’s room for more via microSD. For those seeking a slate that’ll survive the bumps and scrapes of the business world — and not look ridiculous — it’ll be available to enterprise customers of Japanese carrier KDDI this November. No news yet on whether it’ll canoe its way across from the Land of the Rising Sun, but we can give you a few more photos of the rough and tumble tablet after the break.

Create Panoramic Screensavers & Videos

This article was written on June 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

arrow Windows Windows only arrow
Panoramic images have been something that I’ve been trying to do more often, and a lot of that is due to how easy it is to stitch together multiple photos. Plus the new Windows Live Photo Gallery is capable of taking multiple photos and stitching them together to form a full panoramic shot as well. Once you have taken a marvelous panoramic photo you have to do it justice by showing it off. That’s where the free WPanorama software comes into play.

WPanorama is a panoramic photo viewer that can animate your images to make it seem like you’re standing in one spot looking around. It can then transform this animation into an AVI video or even a screensaver that will play on your computer. The screensaver can also be configured to rotate through dozens of different panoramic images if you’d like.

This is WPanorama showing off a panoramic shot that I took in Ames, Iowa

When you fire up the program and load an image it should initiate the auto scrolling right away. This will give your photo a more life-like effect, and it will bounce back and forth as if you repeatedly turned your head from the left side to the right side. If you have a 360 degree panoramic photo you can go to Config -> Advanced options -> Auto reverse, and select the Off option so that the photo will be treated as a 360 degree image. That way when WPanorama is scrolling through the image it will wrap the photo around so that the two ends join together.

If you’re not in to taking your own panoramic shots then you can find some refuge at WPanorama’s 700+ photo gallery (top 20 can be found here), and don’t forget to check out Panoye.

Amazon Kindle (2011) impressions

Price was one of the recurring themes at today’s Amazon event in New York City, and nowhere was that factor more present than with the new Kindle. At $79, this truly is an entry level device, and certainly the company made some sacrifices to hit that price point — most obviously, the reader doesn’t have the touchscreen featured in both the Kindle Touch and the latest Nook and Kobo devices — though like those products, the Kindle did lose its physical keyboard, giving it a much smaller footprint than the last generation. In place of the infrared touchscreen are a series of buttons: Home, Menu, Keyboard and Back. In the middle is a toggle button that lets the user scroll through menus — that activity can be performed pretty quickly with the physical buttons, and flipping through pages is not problem with the familiar buttons on either side of the screen. Where one really misses the presence of touch, however, is with the on-screen keyboard — typing is performed by clicking one’s way through the virtual keyboard, a familiar task for anyone who has ever entered their name at the beginning of a video game with a console controller. Of course, typing is a secondary task on a device like this, so for many users this may not be a deal-breaker. For those who foresee the need for such functionality, however, $20 will buy you an upgrade to the Kindle Touch.

New @ CyberNet: Better Comment Tracking, Featured Feeds, and More

This article was written on October 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

I’m not sure how many of our eagle-eyed visitors noticed the 15-minutes of downtime last night, but I know some of you did because Max started a discussion in the forum about it. The update was to add some of the most requested features that people have been wanting, and I’m going to introduce them to you right now!

–More Feeds–

CyberNet Feeds Kyle emailed me the other day wanting to know if there was anyway that he could get our Daily Downloads posts in their own separate feed. That sparked what I like to consider a “duh!” moment, and so we decided to create feeds for each of our featured articles:

  • CyberNotes (feed)
    Posting frequency: Every day
Description: This is a daily article that is aims to solve problems, introduce new software and sites, and teach you how to do things. Some of these articles are quite lengthy, and we pride ourselves on the content they contain.
  • Daily Downloads (feed)
    Posting frequency: Every weekday
Description: This is the newest addition to CyberNet, and is essentially a brief rundown of software that has received updates. We provide a short list of some of the changes to go along with each to help you better decide whether the upgrade is worth it.
  • Helpful Tips (feed)
Posting frequency: Couple times a week
Description: These are tips that you may find useful when the time calls for it, such as cleaning your keyboard.
  • MyFive (feed)
Posting frequency: Couple times a week
Description: This is definitely one of my favorites. Here we come up with a list of five items that can span across a wide range of topics. It can be things we like, things we don’t like, or just stuff that’s fun.

I’m guessing that a lot of people will be using these feeds as a supplement to our main feed, but these will probably be tracked more carefully. Maybe you have a folder of “important feeds” like me, and you want to put the Daily Downloads in there to ensure you don’t miss one of the posts?

–Much Better Comment Tracking–

We’re extremely happy with everyone that tracks commenting on the site because it helps us build the respected community that we want, and today we have a new feature that will make keeping up with comments a lot easier. Let me introduce you to the Live Comment Preview located on the Management page.

CyberNet Unread Comments Reading

Yep, all you have to do is hit the arrow to the left of the article’s title and you’ll instantly see all new comments to the post. You no longer have to remember which comment you last read on a given post, because we do that for you! And don’t forget, you can mark a post as read simply by hitting the green checkmark or by clicking the “Mark All Read” button on the bottom.

–AJAX Comment Editing–

CyberNet AJAX Comment Editing As long as you’re a registered user you’ll be able to edit any comment you post for up to 15 minutes. That’s nothing new, but now when you click the “Edit” button you’ll be able to make changes on the same page that you left your comment! Ah, the wonders of AJAX.

Hat tip to Max for the suggestion!

–And More–

We’ve also made some bug fixes and backend performance enhancements that should speed up the site. As always send us suggestions on what you would like to see the site do. Everything that we’ve implemented today has come at the request of our readers, and your feedback is of the utmost importance to us.

Amazon Kindle Touch impressions (video)

One of the three major devices launched at today’s Amazon event, the Kindle Touch is aimed firmly at the latest touchscreen Nook and Kobo devices. Like those readers, the new Kindle is based around an infrared touchscreen in the place of a physical keyboard, making the device a good deal smaller than the Kindle 3. The touchscreen is fairly responsive, and the thing flips through pages quickly with a swipe or a tap, refreshing about once every six pages or so, a rate about on-par with that of its chief competition. A task like performing a search on the other hand, requires a much larger screen refresh — still, activities like these and typing are performed quite quickly for an E-Ink device. The search function itself is rather precise, letting the user locate instances of things like character names throughout a text. In all, it looks as though Amazon has produced a worthy competitor to the space-leading touch devices — and the $99 / $149 price tags for the WiFi and 3G versions certainly don’t hurt. Check out a video of the device after the break.

Is a 10-inch Kindle Fire coming? Amazon says ‘stay tuned’

Is a 10-inch Amazon Kindle Fire coming?

We already knew to expect a 7-incher today, and that’s exactly what we got in the Kindle Fire. We just asked Amazon Kindle vice president (and thinking man) Russ Grandinetti when we might expect a larger successor. With a smile, Russ said “Stay tuned,” and left it at that. If you’ll recall, RIM’s Ryan Biden told us at a past Engadget Show that there was “no reason” the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook couldn’t be shipped in a different size, and given recent rumors that both outfits were working with Quanta, it’s not too tough to read betwixt the lines. We also asked about an international release of the Fire, knowing that many of you are lamenting its US-only release in November. We got the same response there. So, it’s coming… the only question is when.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 coming to T-Mobile

See that there? That’s confirmation from T-Mobile USA that it’ll be stocking the Galaxy Tab 10.1 soon. Unfortunately, there’s no word on whether the model it hawks will boast a WWAN module (or if it’s just a magenta-hued WiFi edition), but you can bet we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for news as it comes. For now, hit the source link to “Like” or “Pretend to Dislike.”
