Sony PS Vita First Edition Bundle up for pre-order, lets North American buyers snag it one week early

The United States may not be getting the PS Vita at first, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be the first kid on your block to own one. Sony took to its US PlayStation Blog today, unveiling its First Edition bundle of the portable gaming powerhouse, which is up for pre-order now at “select retailers.” US buyers will receive a 3G + WiFi Vita with a limited edition case, a 4GB memory card and a copy of Little Deviants for $350, while Canadian buyers will get the WiFi-only variant for $299 — better yet, it’ll arrive at your doorstep one week prior to the 02/22/2012 release date for North America. Sure, it may not have wishful goodies like pro bono AT&T 3G, but if you’ve just gotta have it, well, them’s the breaks, y’all. You’ll find more info at the source link below, or at Amazon where we’ve already spotted it.

Canon S100 hands-on (video)

Canon Powershot S100

We managed to sneak in a bit of hands-on time with the Powershot S100 here at PhotoPlus in Manhattan. The followup to Canon’s S95 is a fairly slick point-and-shoot. It’s not the most compact camera in its space, but the new Powershot is surprisingly lightweight. It’s got a healthy 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor with improved low-light performance and a 5x optical zoom, the latter of which could certainly do with a bump. The S100 captures 1080p HD video and sports a convenient, dedicated movie button (no switching modes here). The high-end point-and-shoot doesn’t pack too many surprises, but it certainly seems like a worthy successor to the highly-regarded S95. Sadly, Canon still wouldn’t commit to a firm release date, only saying that it’s due out in November for around $430.

Terrence O’Brien contributed to this report.

Lyrics Plugin for Winamp & WMP

This article was written on November 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

Lyrics Plugin

When I’m listening to music it is nice to have the lyrics available within the media player so that you don’t have to venture off onto the Internet to hunt them down. So many of the online services bombard you with advertisements and popups, and it becomes more of a chore to find what you’re looking for.

I came across a free plugin today that does exactly what I wanted. It automatically retrieves and displays lyrics in Winamp or Windows Media Player (WMP) for the songs as they are played. I downloaded and installed the plugin for Windows Media Player, and it managed to get the lyrics for a large number of my songs. And I can’t forget to mention the simplified interface that makes reading the lyrics easy.

If you’re a lyric buff I highly recommend you give this a shot!

Logitech Revue on sale promising ‘new & improved’ Google TV with Android 3.1, Market (Update: Logitech responds)

Well, well, what do we have here? These Logitech Revue boxes just hit the sales floor of a major electronics retailer, prominently sporting “New & Improved: Google TV with Android 3.1 and Android Market” stickers. Logitech also released its quarterly earnings overnight, claiming $7.9 million in sales from the Revue and accessories since dumping its CEO and slashing prices to $99. These haven’t been cracked open yet to see if any Honeycomb leaks out, so it’s possible they’re just waiting for the long-delayed OTA update like all the others. Still, if you’re trying to get a jump on the second major Google TV push without any hackery needed, it could be worth scouting store shelves in your area.

Update: As a few commenters have pointed out, a support rep on Logitech’s forums indicates these boxes have been updated with a sticker only. You’ll still have to wait Google to deliver the goods along with everyone else.

Update 2: Logitech reached out to us with the following statement:

We’d like to clarify that these products do not include the next version of Google TV software. The boxes were prematurely updated with the stickers in anticipation of the next release of the Google TV software, which, once available, will be a free and automatic update pushed to all Logitech Revue boxes that are installed and connected to the Internet.

[Thanks, DevonTheDude]

ViStart gets an Awesome Upgrade

This article was written on June 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

ViStart Beta 5A few months ago I wrote about a cool application for Windows XP which will emulate the Start Menu in Windows Vista. Then came along another Start Menu emulator from the creator of the Vista Transformation Pack, and this one has received a great update as the final step before Vista Transformation Pack 7 is released.

ViStart Beta 5 is the standalone Start Menu that runs in Windows XP, and perfectly replaces your Start Menu. It does all of the following:

  • Puts your user image in the upper-right corner, and replaces that image with other graphics as you hover over the menu items on the right side.
  • The Programs menu is actually contained within the Start Menu, instead of popping out like it does in XP. This is a big thing that skins alone were never able to emulate.
  • Search! It doesn’t index your files, but the search bar does pull up matching program names as you type.
  • System Tray icon that you can right-click on to shut-down, restart, or log-off of your computer.

The screenshot above is what ViStart looks like in the Vista Transformation Pack, and as you can see there are a lot of similarities to the Vista counterpart. While this program can be run as a standalone program, the font used is what’s specified in your system settings. So from my experience it doesn’t look as spectacular if you don’t have the Vista Transformation Pack installed.

Things are definitely looking up for the Vista Transformation Pack, and when version 7 gets released we’ll be sure to let you know. In the mean time you can play around with ViStart a little more:

Windows Phone Apollo coming ‘middle of next year,’ says Nokia VP

A top Nokia exec just confirmed the much-rumored schedule for the next Windows Phone update, codenamed Apollo. Michael Halbherr, Executive VP for Location and Commerce, told us that it’ll launch in mid-2012 and be a “very different game” to Mango — hinting that Apollo actually refers to Windows Phone 8 rather than any mere decimal increment. What do we know about Apollo at this point? Well, not a great deal, but Halbherr also revealed that he’s been pushing Microsoft to integrate NFC and a “positioning framework” to make its mobile OS work better with Nokia’s Navteq mapping platform and thereby provide new location-based services. Sorry HTC, Samsung, but everything points to a more ‘Nokia-fied’ OS.

Update: We’ve spoken with some sources close to Microsoft who indicate that the timing given to us by Nokia is inaccurate. Unfortunately, the truth serum we used wore off before we were provided with a surrogate timeframe, but we’ll of course keep our ears to the ground.

Google Docs Gets Impressive Templates Gallery

This article was written on July 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

One of the features that Google Docs has been “missing” to make it a complete online office suite is templates. I’ve used templates in Microsoft Office on multiple occasions whether it be for a resume, a brochure, or a newsletter, and for some, they are a necessity. Google Docs hasn’t offered anything like that until now. They just made a lot of people happy by launching a Google Docs Template Gallery already filled with about 300 templates.

The Official Google Blog posted about this new addition to Google Docs, and they said that they realized that people use documents for all aspects of their lives which is why they decided they needed to put something together. They said, “You need resumes and cover letters to look for jobs and fax cover letters and invoices to run your businesses. And of course you want to use documents in fun ways with family and friends, such as unique designs and layouts for invitation cards and calendars.

Google Docs Templates.png

If you take a look around the Templates Gallery, you’ll see that they included templates for all kinds of different things. They are broken down into categories like albums and flipbooks, cards and certificates, resumes and cover letters, students and teachers, and more. Users can rate the templates, and then you can sort them by highest rating, most users, or “hottest.” They were also kind enough to break them down into template type up at the top so that you can easily sift between templates for documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

We took a look through some of the offerings and it looks as though most of the templates have been made by Google with only a handful made by outside sources, which is pretty impressive. It also looks as though they may be doing some filtering of the templates. When this article was started, there were about 310 templates available and at this point there are 295.

Overall we are impressed. This will definitely help Google grow Google Docs because more people may be willing to try it if they can get done with it what they need to, like create a resume or business cards. A good set of templates is something we feel OpenOffice.org still lacks (they’ve got them, but nothing impressive), so kudos to Google.

Rotor Concept HPQ-1 quadcopter eyes-on (video)

Rotor Concept Inc.

We’re here at the PhotoPlus show in New York, and as usual, the stranger products are being showcased on the outskirts of the show. A company called Rotor Concept out of Southern California was showing off the HPQ-1, a quadcopter designed to lug around your digital camera. The copter itself is surprisingly quiet and steady, the latter of which is no doubt helped out by the presence of four propellers and advanced stabilization system (put the controller down and it will automatically hold its position).

The HPQ-1 can hold payloads of up to 12 ounces, so users can use standard digital cameras to live stream events or a pair of smaller shooters to capture arial 3D clips. According to the company, SWAT teams are looking into using the product for surveillance. The other recommended usage? Weddings, of course. The copter can reach a max altitude of 2,000 feet and has a theoretical maximum flight radius of up to a mile. It’s available now for an MSRP of $899. Peep a quick video after the break.

Deep Inside Prison’s Dark and Tangled Economy

A movie-goer’s concept of prison economy is likely that it’s a cigarette-fueled barter system. That may be part of it, but it only scratches the surface. The truth is a violent world of sex, drugs and… postage stamps? More »
