Pogoplug Mobile: Your Own Personal Cloud

Pogoplug Mobile stream content to and from your phone or tablet, wherever you are

Pogoplug Mobile is like iCloud without the cloud, and it works with pretty much any iOS or Android device. The little box sits on your home network and streams content to and from your phone — wherever you are — over the Internet.

The box works with content stored on SD cards or a USB hard drive. Plug them in and any photos, videos or music can be accessed via the Pogoplug app on your phone or tablet. It works the other way, too: any photos and videos you take with your phone are sent back automatically to your home.

If you have unlimited mobile bandwidth, or you use your mobile device predominantly in Wi-Fi zones, then this sounds ideal. The price is good, too: Just $80, with no subscription fees, ever.

It’s been a week of upgrades for Sony Tablet S owners. First came news of the PlayStation Store’s arrival and now comes confirmation that Sony’s Music Unlimited service is available, as well. OCZ pushes access-time boundaries with Octane and Octane-S2 SSDs

OCZ Technology’s pushing SSDs on step further this morning, with the introduction of the Octane SATA 6Gbps and Octane-S2 SATA 3Gbps SSDs. These guys promise “record-breaking access times” and up to 1TB of capacity, with Indilinx Everest internals playing things out on the inside. Oddly enough, the company claims that this is the world’s first SSD to hit 1TB, but in fact, we saw the first one from pureSilicon way back in early 2009. At any rate, the company claims that these guys can deliver up to 560MB/sec of bandwidth and 45,000 IOPS, and they rely on a proprietary page mapping algorithms allow for steady mixed-workload performance. The Octane series also includes a number of features unique to Indilinx — including latency reduction technology — enabling both read and write access times as low as 0.06ms and 0.09ms, respectively. Aside from that 1TB flagship, there will also be 128GB, 256GB and 1TB models, and while no pricing details are being outed just yet, we’re told to expect around $1.10 to $1.30 per gigabyte. Interested? They’ll start shipping on November 1st.

iTunes Sells Over Five Billion Songs!

This article was written on June 19, 2008 by CyberNet.

iTunes five billion milestone.pngApple has good reason to celebrate today after iTunes reached its five billion songs sold milestone. Five billion songs is a lot if you think about it. To put it into perspective, here are a few examples involving the number five billion…

  • Five billion seconds translates out to about 158.5 years
  • Five billion minutes translates out to about 9,505 years
  • Five billion feet translates out to about 946,969 miles
  • Five billion pints translates out to about 625,000,000 gallons
  • As of June 2008, the world’s population is estimated to be just under 6.7 billion, which means the number of songs downloaded from iTunes isn’t THAT far off from the World’s population

What’s interesting to note is that in early 2008, over 4 billion songs had been sold when they were celebrating their 5th birthday. If they’ve already reached over five billion, they’ve experienced quite a bit of growth over the last several months.

Aside from celebrating the five billion songs milestone, Apple is also celebrating the fact that they rent and sell over 50,000 movies each day. Clearly they sell more songs than they do movies, but that’ an area where there is plenty of room to grow. We have yet to try out iTunes for renting or buying movies, but those who do seem to be satisfied.

Congrats to Apple and iTunes. 7 years ago when iTunes first launched, who would have thought that it would have become so popular? Five Billion is definitely a big milestone and helps explain why it is that they are the largest music retailer in the United States.

Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus ready for your pre-orders, sticky with Honeycomb (Update: 404’d)

Having passed the FCC’s critical eye, and hot on the heels of Samsung’s now official love-in with Google, the Korean manufacturer’s pint-sized tablet refresh is now up for pre-ordering. Priced at $399 for the 16GB model (or $499 for 32GB), Amazon remains tight-lipped on release date info, but is more than happy to tell us what we’ll get for that wad of notes. That includes Android Honeycomb 3.2, and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor — a substantial jump up from the single 1GHz processor we had with the original Galaxy Tab. If Samsung can promise a swift Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, we could well be sold.

Update: It appears the Amazon links are pointing to a 404 error now. We’ll keep an eye on them!

Be Kind, Please Rewind…Your DVD’s

This article was written on October 04, 2006 by CyberNet.

Be Kind, Please Rewind Most of us have probably seen those stickers that read “Be Kind, Please Rewind” on VHS videos that you rent. I bet you have always forgotten to rewind your DVD’s though!

But wait…this is real! You can actually purchase the DVD Rewinder for $16.49 (on sale). At that price it is practically a steal.

I was going to try and summarize the functionality of the unit but I don’t think I could do a better job than the product’s description. I did make sure to point out a few things that I thought was important though:

Too many DVDs, and CDs and not enough time to rewind? Are your DVDs running a bit too slow? The DVD rewinder is the perfect solution! This novelty rewinder comes with the exclusive Centriptal Velocity Spindle providing the world’s fastest DVD rewind!

The DVD Rewinder has a great black and fluorescent green color scheme with high tech styling! The DVD Rewinder will spin discs backwards and plays a “rewind” sound. You can also record your own “rewind” sound which provides unending possibilities. For the tech hip, the DVD Rewinder also has an additional MP3 port and plays a separate “rewind” sound. Rewind all types of disc media DVDs, CDs, and Console Games. But not just novelty, the DVD Rewinder has utility. It has a built in compartment that holds a disc cleaner. This compartment can be used to hold the cleaner, loose couch change, tooth picks, keys or other small items. A truly unique product with a truly unique design!

DVD Rewinder

Man, I was wondering why my DVD’s were going too slow. It is pretty tempting to buy one of these because it has 3 reviews that all gave it a perfect 5/5 stars. Hopefully with technological advances computers will soon have this feature built-in. ;)

iPhone 4S Supports Russian GLONASS Satnav

The iPhone 4S adds support for GLONASS, the Russian version of GPS

Apple isn’t a company that adds features which aren’t universally supported. Thus the original iPhone lacked 3G back before 3G was widely deployed, and the iPhone 4S still lacks a 4G radio for the same reasons.

But one surprise feature, noticed by Russian bloggers, is support for GLONASS in the iPhone 4GS. What’s that, you ask? GLONASS is Russia’s answer to GPS which, according to the Wikipedia, consists of 24 satellites. The full constellation has only recently been restored since it fell into disrepair in the 1990s, and will soon be armed and fully operational.

What does this mean? In practical terms, you will get to use either GPS or GLONASS, which offers some level of redundancy. Why has Apple added this now? Is it part of some plot to rule the world? No. It’s just that the latest generation of GPS chips from the likes of Qualcomm and Broadcom have added GLONASS support. This means it will likely be coming to pretty much every GPS device in the future.

Now, if only the Europeans could finish their ridiculously overdue Galileo system. I hear some Android phones already support it (rimshot).

ASUS says Eee Pad Transformer tablet will get ICS upgrade… sometime

We’ve already gotten some information about which phones will be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update and when, and we’re now starting to get some official word on tablet upgrades as well. Speaking with Pocket-lint, an ASUS rep said that the Eee Pad Transformer “will be getting [the] update to ICS,” but that the company “can’t provide a schedule at this stage.” Still no word from other Honeycomb tablet manufacturers, unfortunately, but we’ll keep you posted. Of course, this also leads us to believe that the freshly-unveiled Transformer Prime will likely have Android 4.0 right from the factory, but we’ll have to wait (presumably, anyway) until November 9th to know for sure.

Nikon J1 and V1 compacts now available for mirror haters everywhere

You heard that Nikon is releasing a couple of mirrorless compacts, right? Well, the ten megapixel J1 and V1 models are both on sale from today, sticking to their schedule despite the terrible flooding in Thailand that has already impacted heavily on Sony’s camera production. The metal V1 is priced at $900 including a 10-30mm, f/3.5 max aperture kit lens. Meanwhile, the plastic J1 is going for $650 with the same glass and we’ve already subjected it to some full review scrutiny.

Kickstand Desk Lets You Ride Your Bike at Work

With the Kickstand desk, you can commute to work, even if you work at home

It might not offer the simple good looks of the Pit-In, the drive-in desk for bikes we saw back in March, but the Kickstand desk is both more practical (it has a bigger top) and more available (you can actually buy one).

The Kickstand desk caters to those obsessive multi-taskers who want to exercise and work at the same time. Less goofy than a treadmill desk, the Kickstand is tall enough to fit your bike underneath, and sturdy enough that it won’t wobble as you pedal.

Why not just use a regular stand-up desk, you ask? Because the Kickstand has a sliding top to let you reach the handlebars or change gears. Then again, the Kickstand starts at $2,500 ($2,750 is you choose a glass top over the standard wood), so you might not mind losing a little convenience to save money.

I’d skip it altogether. My current setup of a bar stool and an ironing board might not be ideal — my back aches and I can’t feel my fingers anymore — but if I had $2,500 I’d be spending it on a bike and actually taking it outdoors.
