Download Windows Live OneCare 1.5 Beta – Vista Compatible

Windows Live OneCare On Vista

I can’t believe it took so long but Microsoft finally released a Vista compatible version of Windows Live OneCare. I have almost gotten up the nerve to try it out but I just don’t feel secure using an antivirus by Microsoft…and I don’t know why. They should be the ones that can provide the best solution because no one knows the system better than them, but they are so new to the market.

Here is a list of what’s new in this release:

  • Service for 17 international markets (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, and Switzerland)
  • Unified antivirus and anti-spyware filtering capabilities
  • More back up options with the addition of local network computers and USB-connected storage devices
  • Support for the Windows Vista operating system

I have downloaded the file by following the steps that they gave me after I entered in my email address. So there is no need for you to enter in your email because you can just use these steps (Windows XP SP2 or Vista build 5500 and beyond are the only ones supported):

Step 1: Remove any other antivirus or firewall products from your PC.
Step 2: Go to Windows Live OneCare Beta v1.5 Setup.
Step 3: Follow the step-by-step instructions. Once Windows Live OneCare installation is complete, your PC will restart.

I love how they say to remove other antivirus or firewall products. Hmmm…how do I remove the Windows Firewall?!? :)

If you want to see more of what it looks like then check out the quick screenshot gallery that Paul Thurrott threw up. It gives you a nice glance at OneCare in Vista and gives you an idea of what to expect.

Google thinks your digital books belong on a digital bookcase, digitally (video)

How to best view the Google Books collections? Why, a digital bookcase, of course. But this isn’t just any bookcase, it’s a giant spinning 3D helix of a bookcase, collecting more than 10,000 titles in 28 subjects. Users can navigate the WebGL Bookcase by spinning it around or swiping it up and down. Sure, it’s not the quickest way to locate a title amongst tens of thousands of books, but perhaps it’ll offer up some small consolation for those who miss browsing real-life bookstores. You can check out the experiment in the source link below — be forewarned, however, that it’s a bit of a resource hog.

MIT Announces Quanta As $100 Laptop Manufacturer

This article was written on December 14, 2005 by CyberNet.

MIT One Laptop Per Child

The most renowned laptop in the world right now is probably the $100 laptop developed by Nicholas Negroponte. You mean to tell me that you don’t own one yet? Well, no one does. They have however made a big step today by announcing that the manufacturer from Taiwan, Quanta, will be making these computers for them. They are currently the world’s largest manufacturer of notebook laptops so I am sure that they are a good solution for the job. If you haven’t heard much about the laptop then it is good you know the main jist of it.

The laptop is for a One Laptop Per Child initiative to help those in developing countries get a little boost on technology. It hasn’t officially been said whether there will be a version available for retail sales, but rumors are that they would like to make one to sell in retail stores for around $150. This overcost will help them provide these laptops at the nearly impossible $100 price. It is also energy friendly since it does have a crank that has to be turned to power it. The approximate ratio for power is 1 minute of turning will provide 10 minutes of power. The operating system on this beast will be Linux despite offers from Microsoft and Apple.

Want to order some in bulk? Current bulk orders are in the range of 5 to 15 MILLION laptops. Again, this is because their focus is on selling these to countries, and not stores!

I hope all goes well with the project just to prove Intel’s CEO wrong!

Motorola locks Droid RAZR bootloader, angers ROM-happy lovers of anorexic handsets

Motorola Twitter

Like the Droid 3 before it, Motorola’s Droid RAZR will be shipping with a locked bootloader — despite the company’s promise to start unlocking its handsets. Sure, the Atrix is ripe for the hacking, but it seems like Verizon really doesn’t want Moto encouraging its customers to start mucking around with custom ROMs. The official Motorola Mobility Twitter account says the RAZR bootload is locker per the carrier’s request. It’s a shame, but we’re sure this will be only a temporary roadblock. If it takes more than a month to crack this bad boy we’ll be shocked.

Firefox 2 Visual Refresh Theme Now Implemented!

This article was written on August 04, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox 2 Visual Refresh Theme Now Implemented!

I was watching the builds to see when they would implement the Visual Refresh that I just mentioned moments ago and they have now done it!

I haven’t been playing around with it only for a few minutes (obviously) but it seems to be very pleasing on the eyes. The rounded corners make a huge difference in my opinion and will fit into Windows Vista much better than the standard theme.

I have put together a portable version for those people who want to give it a whirl. All you have to do is download the Portable Firefox 2 file below. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file FirefoxPortable.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Firefox 2 with the new Visual Refresh theme! The profile is kept with the FirefoxPortable folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!

Download Portable Firefox 2.0 (with Visual Refresh theme)
Download the Windows Installer
Download for Linux

Update:
Mac users can download the latest nightly here but I haven’t been able to test to make sure it had the new theme in it. Please let me know if it does. Pete K. confirmed that it does work for a Mac.
Update 2:
You can download the Classic Firefox 1.5 Theme if you don’t like the new one.

April Fools Jokes 2007: The Pirate Bay Finds New Home in North Korea

This article was written on April 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

PirateEveryone was skeptical that The Pirate Bay would find a new home to circumvent their legal woes, but North Korea appears to be their new hiding spot. The Pirate Bay Blog had this to say about their upcoming move:

Today we announce that we’re moving some of our servers to the North-Korean Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden.

After lenghty discussions with the leader of North Korea Kim Jong-Il we have decided to start a cooperation.

Some of the reasons are the extremely good bandwidth agreement we get – redundant fibre links, redundant power with diesel to last for four years makes the colocation a very good deal for us.

We are also promised immunity against foreign copyright holders and all of the crew will get North Korean citizenships.

“One of the reasons that we’re doing the move is also that the Swedish King still haven’t granted us a visit with his daughter. This ignorance towards the cultural benefits of having a site like The Pirate Bay can not be ignored.” says Tiamo, one of the founders of The Pirate Bay.

We would like to thank Kim Jong-Il for the opportunity and we would like all of our users to review their current feelings towards this great nation!

The move is quite surprising given that three weeks ago they gave a diploma to the King of Sweden (where they are currently located) for helping make “Sweden famous globally when it comes to technology and culture.”

Thanks to Richard in the CyberNet Forum for the tip!

Stay tuned as we feature a wide array of April Fools Jokes throughout the day!
