Pantech Breakout now available to bring LTE to the light-walleted

An LTE handset on Verizon’s network that doesn’t feature a 4.3-inch display or a price tag that starts with a two or a three? Why, that would be the Pantech Breakout. The latest 4G phone on Big Red has finally been welcomed into the fold, available and ready to persuade more people to experience blazing-fast mobile broadband without frantically digging themselves out of debt. To recap, the Breakout features Android 2.3, a 1GHz single-core CPU and 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel rear camera accompanied by a VGA front-facing cam and 720p HD video capture, a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT LCD and a 1,500mAh juicepack. Worth a Benjamin? You make the call.

4G variant of HTC’s Radar spotted in the wild, flying a magenta flag

The Radar’s arrival in this world was overshadowed by the massive Titan released on the same day. But if a batch of spy shots sent to TmoNews is to be believed, then this mid-specced 3.8-inch Windows Phone could be about to get some much needed 4G pep on T-Mobile’s network. The photos also reveal plenty of magenta branding, Tango video calling and of course Mango running under the hood. Further corroboration probably won’t come til we detect an HSPA+ Radar at the FCC, but with some decent 6/7Mbps real-world download speeds and hopefully some mobile hotspot action this could well be a device worth having.

Samsung releases AT&T Galaxy S II kernel source far in advance of the phone’s release

Whoever’s cranking out the kernel source in Samsung’s headquarters has some serious aspirations. Cooking it up for the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch the day it was released was a rather snappy process, but the manufacturer’s managed to one-up even itself by pushing out AT&T’s version a full week and a half early. Talk about an exciting deal for developers, who now have a sizable head start ahead of the Galaxy S II’s October 2nd launch. Not too shabby, right? Let’s see exactly what those with the know-how can build in the meantime — we predict customization options aplenty by the time the phone’s officially stocked on store shelves. How early can we expect to see the kernel for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II? Hard to say, but for now you can grab the kernel source at… well, the source below.

Sony’s Tablet S goes under the knife, reveals secrets lurking within

With the Tablet S on sale, it was really only a matter of time before its inevitable teardown, and here to fill our need for splayed circuity is one from TechRepublic. Seeing as most Honeycomb tablets have similar internals, there aren’t too many surprises to be had, but the outfit did curiously find a hole for a cellular modem, as well as an easy to replace battery and an internal plastic frame that adds rigidity (pictured above). HTC Raider 4G arrives bearing South Korean LTE, looks a lot like the Holiday

HTC has bestowed a sparkly new handset upon its South Korean customers today, with the release of the Raider 4G. Sporting a 4.5-inch qHD display, this Gingerbread-coated device is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and boasts 1GB of RAM, along with 16GB of internal storage. Graced with what appears to be HTC’s Sense 3.0, the Raider also features an eight megapixel camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing shooter and supports 1080p Full HD video recording, as well as the usual smattering of WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS capabilities. When connected to a South Korean LTE network, this handset can reportedly achieve downstream / upstream speeds of 100Mbps and 50Mbps uploads, respectively, with HSPA downloads clocking in at 21Mbps and uploads at 5.76Mbps. The manufacturer hasn’t revealed any plans for an international release, though rumor has it that this Holiday-like device may be heading to AT&T at some point. Verizon continues nationwide LTE expansion tour, edges closer to year-end goal

It appears that Verizon’s showing no signs of slowing its LTE expansion efforts, as 26 markets lit up last week and at least another 21 are ready to debut on October 20th. The most recent switching of the flip, which took place on September 15th, rose the grand total of cities blanketed by LTE to 143, covering more than 160 million people; the upcoming effort to expand will increase it to 164 cities. The carrier’s goal by the end of the year is 175, which means it’ll be just 11 cities away from achieving its 2011 objective with two months to spare. Notable highlights include: Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico; Buffalo and Niagara, New York; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Stockton and Modesto, California. Los Angeles and San Diego will also be getting more coverage. HP’s unreleased white TouchPad and Pre 3 for AT&T (hands-on video)

What’s this? Some of HP’s unreleased WebOS devices? Well yes! Say hello to the white european TouchPad, the black TouchPad 4G for AT&T, the Pre 3 for AT&T, and our very own Veer 4G review unit, all gathered on a fine specimen of new century modern upholstery. We were able to unbox these devices and handle the hardware, but the software was off limits. The owner of the Pre 3 did activate it for us, but that’s as far as we were able to go. While still heavier and thicker than the competition, the white TouchPad — a 64GB model with the faster 1.5GHz CPU — is significantly more attractive than its black sibling, and less of a fingerprint magnet to boot. AT&T’s TouchPad 4G — with 32GB of storage and the same 1.5GHz processor — features a working SIM slot for the carrier’s faux-G network (HSPA+), but is otherwise cosmetically identical to the existing WiFi version. The Pre 3 is is identical to the one we handled during HP’s announcement last February, save for the AT&T logo on the back. Check out our gallery below, and hit the break for our hands-on video.

You’re cruisin’ in your sweet ride when all of a sudden you realize exactly what your set of wheels is missing: Webtop. While the vast majority of us may shrug off the thought, convincing ourselves that our 3.5mm jack or cassette player is plenty to keep us mindlessly entertained through the morning commute, one man with the know-how dared to be different. All of that blazing-fast LTE pumping out of his Droid Bionic was being wasted, after all, so why not outfit his car’s AV setup with Webtop and HDMI mirroring capabilities to blast Netflix on his dash and multiple screens in the back for the kiddies?
