Luke, I am your smartphone (video)

NTT DoCoMo recently launched the Samsung Galaxy S in the Japanese market and now we’ve come to discover that it’s chosen a very forceful personality to represent the product to its discerning audience. Darth “roundabound” Vader has been starring in the carrier’s latest round of “always with you” ads, wherein he serves as a (sort of) human representation of the phone, thus lending some anthropomorphic qualities to the cold slab of technology awaiting you in the shops. This whole outlandish idea really shouldn’t work, but somehow it does — we want a little Vader in our lives too now. Video after the break.

Verizon launching LTE network in December 2010 (video)

Verizon’s been talking details on LTE deployment for some time now, but even at CTIA earlier in the year, the carrier insisted that it would be the first half of 2011 before the next-gen network was active in the US of A. Now, it looks as if the engineers have been working triple-time in order to get Long Term Evolution live in the States under Big Red’s branding, as a new VZW commercial (embedded after the break) has affirmed that the first LTE waves will go public here in December 2010. Yeah, next month. Granted, there’s no information beyond the date, but at least we shouldn’t have to ponder long which devices will be first out of the gate. Here’s hoping Santa’s wish list has room for one more thing.

Verizon launching ‘4G’ smack talk campaign against AT&T

Never ends, does it? The top four carriers in the US love slinging mud, but the trash-talking between Verizon and AT&T is always particularly vicious — and it’s showing no signs of ebbing. As you might expect, Verizon intends to use its new LTE network as a weapon in the fight, and like both Sprint and T-Mobile, Verizon will be very loudly labeling it “4G” to the ITU’s chagrin. The latest promotional posters compare maps of Verizon’s combined 3G / LTE network with AT&T’s 3G-only network, but considering how limited Big Red’s initial LTE launch is, there really isn’t much difference with what they’ve shown in the past. The posters also proudly proclaim Verizon as having “the fastest 4G network in America,” which is false on at least one level — LTE isn’t really 4G, as we said — and remains to be seen on another. At any rate, as always, it’ll be interesting to see how AT&T responds. Nerd fight!

Microsoft exec caught in privacy snafu, says Kinect might tailor ads to you

Microsoft’s Dennis Durkin voiced an interesting idea at an investment summit last week — the idea that the company’s Kinect camera might pass data to advertisers about the way you look, play and speak. “We can cater what content gets presented to you based on who you are,” he told investors, suggesting that the Kinect offered business opportunities that weren’t possible “in a controller-based world.”

And over time that will help us be more targeted about what content choices we present, what advertising we present, how we get better feedback. And data about how many people are in a room when an advertisement is shown, how many people are in a room when a game is being played, how are those people engaged with the game? How are they engaged with a sporting event? Are they standing up? Are they excited? Are they wearing Seahawks jerseys?

Needless to say, sharing this level of photographic detail with advertisers presents some major privacy concerns — though it’s nothing we haven’t heard before — but moreover it’s explicitly against the privacy policy Microsoft presents Kinect users. “Third party partners use aggregated data to deliver Kinect experiences (games or applications), to understand how customers use their Kinect experiences, and to improve performance or even to help plan new experiences,” the Kinect Privacy and Online Safety FAQ reads, but also “They are not permitted to use the information for marketing purposes such as selling you games or services, or for personalizing advertising” (bolding ours).

In an email to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft flatly denied that the Kinect would do anything of the sort, whether via third-party partners or otherwise. “Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE do not use any information captured by Kinect for advertising targeting purposes,” representatives wrote. Honestly, some of us at Engadget still think targeted advertising is kind of neat, but we know how seriously you take this stuff.

Verizon’s Pantech and LG LTE modems leak out in ad form

Verizon’s promised a 38-city LTE launch by the end of the year, and it looks like things are ramping up — we were just sent this ad for the LG VL600 and Pantech UML290 4G USB modems. We’ve seen the VL600 at the FCC and in the wild before — it’s a dual-mode CMDA / LTE modem that’ll work pretty much anywhere Verizon has coverage, while the UML290 has a note about global capability “coming soon,” so we’d assume there’s a GSM radio tucked in there as well. Both sticks look like they’re pretty huge, which isn’t uncommon for first-gen hardware like this, but we’re hoping that rumored third Novatel stick is LTE-only and a bit slimmer. We’ll see, we’ll see.

Microsoft’s adorable new Windows 7 ad touts Blu-ray, shows Macs and PCs really just want to be friends

With the holiday buying season descending upon us, fancy new commercials are naturally ramping up in tandem. Microsoft has a new spin on its Windows 7 promotional efforts with its latest ad, which shows a Mac and a PC bonding over a Blu-ray copy of Avatar during a long flight. Naturally, the PC is the only one who can play Blu-ray, which is Microsoft’s semi-subtle pitch, but really this commercial is about the power of Friendship and Sharing Things With Others. We were halfway about to ruin it all by smarmily suggesting the fact that the Mac can play a very similar HD copy of Avatar pulled down from iTunes that won’t put as much of a hurt on his battery, but for whatever reason there’s no Avatar on the US iTunes Store right now (possibly James Cameron’s upcoming extended special collector’s millennium edition release has something to do with it?). Which brings us around to Apple’s real reason for not supporting Blu-ray: they can’t take it away from you.

T-Mobile starts up 4G ad campaign by poking a stiletto into AT&T’s network (video)

We suspected T-Mobile’s new advertising campaign would ruffle some feathers, but we weren’t ready for quite such brazen trash-talking right off the bat. Of course, it’s trash talk dressed up in a pretty white and Magenta dress and delivered in the most angelic of voices, but T-Mobile makes its point to AT&T subscribers loud and clear: we got 4G, you don’t. Whether you consider the network’s current 21Mbps theoretical max a true representation of 4G or not, we’ll leave up to you; just make sure to join us past the break for the Apple-scented commercial, which also teases the myTouch 4G, a HSPA+ handset that T-Mobile happens to be launching today.

Update: AT&T isn’t taking this one lying down. It countered with the following statement this afternoon: “T-Mobile’s claims about 4G are based on the same HSPA+ technology we have deployed to 180 million people today, more than T-Mobile’s reported 140 million, and we’ll have it rolled out to 250 million people by the end of this month, substantially more than the 200 million T-Mobile says it will have by year-end.”

Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0 showcased in new commercial

It’s hard to tell if the ad embedded after the break is purely official, but it definitely reeks of HP. In a good way, that is. Uploaded by the same fellow that gave us our first sneak peek at webOS 2.0, this “Sizzle” ad shows 34 solid seconds of Palm Pre 2 action, complete with a glimpse at Angry Birds, Facebook and all sorts of new 2.0 features. We’re aren’t totally digging the tunes, but otherwise, it looks to be rather attractive — way better than the first wave of original Pre ads, that’s for sure.

Update: Hey, hey — looks like the ad’s now embedded on Palm’s website. Kudos!
