Uber to add cheaper cars to service for mass appeal

A San Francisco startup company called Uber has a very interesting premise. When the app launched it aimed at user’s who are more affluent, and was installed on smartphones such as the iPhone allowing the user to call a luxury car to come pick them up. Uber is now reaching for a broader mass appeal with the addition of lower-priced cars to its service.

Uber will begin this week giving customers the option in San Francisco and New York of choosing a hybrid car rather than a luxury car for a price it says will be 10% to 25% more than a taxi. That compares to the 40% to 100% premium increase customers would pay for something like a town car. The company CEO believes that the addition of lower-priced cars is the first big step in taking the service to the masses.

Uber has been successful in raising a significant amount of money, $43 million, from investors since 2011. The company has software that tries to predict the areas where rights are likely to be in high demand at different times of the day. That information is presented to the company’s drivers via a smart phone app, so they can figure out where they should be at a given time to pick up customers within minutes of a request. Uber doesn’t own cars itself; it partners with existing cars for hire companies and receives a cut of the fair from the car company.

Full Size R/C Toy Jeep Ready to Pop a Wheelie

Just look at the size of that RC Jeep. Both the jeep and its controller are scaled to match the classic Tamiya Wild Willy toy R/C car. If they built a few more and put some medical tents up, we would be well on our way to having an R/C M.A.S.H unit. Cue the theme song.

This huge R/C toy was built at The Bug Box, a mechanical shop and studio in Weiden, Germany. You might notice that the jeep even has the old ribbed R/C car tires. In fact this 1:1 scale model is true to the original model in almost every detail. Yes, that includes the giant Acoms radio control, though it’s not clear if it’s actually functional or just for show.

This would be a whole lot of fun to play with and this model is very good for popping wheelies too.

CloudCar, The Stealthy Startup That Andy Rubin Is *Not* Joining, Has Raised $11.5M

CloudCar, a startup still in stealth mode that was the subject of rumors earlier this month when Robert Scoble reported that Andy Rubin would leave his job at Google to join it, has filed a Form D with the SEC indicating that it has raised $11.5 million in a Series A round.

The startup may not be Rubin’s next place of employment, but he is connected to it: after the rumor hit, and then he denied it on Twitter, he further clarified in a Google+ post that CloudCar “are a group of friends who I give free office space to in my incubator in Los Altos.”

The Series A, the Form D notes, comes in Series A Preferred Stock; Warrants to Purchase Series A-1 Preferred Stock; Series A-1 Preferred Stock issuable upon exercise of Warrants; Common Stock issuable upon conversion of Series A and Series A-1 Stock, with the only stated purposes of the funding being “Proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes including, but not limited to, executive salaries.” (Not atypical for a stealth-mode fundraising.)

While there were some questions over what exactly CloudCar was doing when the Rubin rumor hit, it actually has a website with more detail on the company.

It looks like it will be doing something in the area of bridging in-car services with the kind of wireless content that we are now getting on smartphones and tablets — using cloud-based storage to do it: “The explosive growth of smart phones has raised consumer expectations for the connected in-car experience,” the site says on its jobs page. It notes that ABI predicts that within five years, 90 percent of new cars will ship with connected car features. “Yet market penetration for Connected Cars is in single digits because the current industry technology base prevents rapid innovation.”

Its CEO is Konstantin Othmer, who had previously been the CEO and founder of Core Mobility, a wireless enterprise service that worked with device manufacturers and wireless operators on visual voicemail, voice SMS, wireless backup, and push-to-talk services that shipped on 40 million mobile devices in four countries, according to the site. Core Mobility was purchased by Smith Micro Software. Prior to that he founded CRM startup ePeople, and before that had been an engineer at Apple.

The COO, Brue Leak, and CTO, Peter Barrett, both have experience in web TV services: Leak at WebTV and Barrett at Microsoft TV. Jim Wickett, head of business partnerships, also has extensive experience in media technology companies, most recently at Macrovision/Rovi as EVP.

The company is currently hiring engineers for “new consumer experiences that broaden the scope of current market leading mobile platforms.”

We are contacting CloudCar to see if it can provide some more detail on this funding round and what we might expect next from the company — and whether Rubin has increased his involvement in any way.



Cordon multi-target photo-radar system leaves no car untagged (video)

Go easy on the gas, Speed Racer, because Cordon is on its way. Developed by Simicon, this new speed sensor promises to take highway surveillance to new heights of precision. Unlike most photo radar systems, which track only one violator at a time, Simicon’s device can simultaneously identify and follow up to 32 vehicles across four lanes. Whenever a car enters its range, the Cordon will automatically generate two images: one from wide-angle view and one closeup shot of the vehicle’s license plate. It’s also capable of instantly measuring a car’s speed and mapping its position, and can easily be synced with other databases via WiFi, 3G or WiMAX. Plus, this device is compact and durable enough to be mounted upon a tripod or atop a road sign, making it even harder for drivers to spot. Fortunately, though, you still have time to change your dragster ways, as distributor Peak Gain Systems won’t be bringing the Cordon to North America until the first quarter of 2012. Cruise past the break to see some footage of a field trial that’s currently underway — cars tagged with a green dot are traveling below the speed limit, those with a yellow marking are chugging along within an acceptable range above the limit, while vehicles with a red tab are just asking for trouble.

Tesla Roadster to return in 2014, 3-Series fighter in the works

Didn’t have enough time to count 10 million pennies before the original Tesla Roadster went out of production? Well you’re in luck, because there’ll be a successor. Space cadet and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Elon Musk, confirmed to Autocar that a new Roadster would return in 2014. Unlike its Lotus-based predecessor, the redux will apparently be based on Tesla’s third-generation platform, which the automag muses will likely be built on a”shortened version of … the Model S.” Musk also noted that the platform will be more “mass-market,” giving rise to more pedestrian cars “like BMW’s 3 Series” — his words, not ours. With the Model S sedan on its way, and the Model X after that, the company certainly has its work cut out for it. But, if either are as delightful as prior Teslas, that’ll be reason to cheer.

Ford’s Driver Alert System keeps you in the right lane, recommends java on occasion

It ain’t the first automaker to do so, but Ford’s taking a step in the ‘stay in your own lane!’ direction with a new technology package for the Explorer. The Driver Alert System is slated to launch in early 2012, and it’ll tout new lane keeping technologies, including a system that can help detect drowsy drivers. The goal here is to keep sleepyheads from destroying lives — be it their own or others — by suggesting that they pull over, rest and have a sip of coffee if they’ve been cruising along for an extended period of time. Furthermore, a camera setup will monitor one’s lane position, and if they drift too far away from the straight and narrow, their steering wheel will vibrate. It all sounds good and well, but the fact that a AAA survey found that over 40 percent of Americans have “fallen asleep or nodded off while driving” makes ‘staying at home’ seem like the sensible choice.

Escort’s SmartCord Live brings radar detection, KRS-One to your smartphone (video)

Evading the long arm of the law, as we all know, is infinitely easier with a radar detector onboard — and even easier if said detector is hooked up to a cloud. That’s the idea behind the SmartCord Live, a new power cord from the eagle-eyed folks at Escort. Once connected to your car’s radar detector and lighter socket, this Bluetooth-enabled bundle will communicate with your iPhone or Android handset through a specialized app. Once that’s taken care of, you’ll be hooked up to Escort Live — a so-called “social network for the road.” There, you’ll find access to Escort’s Defender database, full of real-time geographic information on verified speed traps, red light cameras and other roadway surveillance systems. Once your detector picks up a threat, you can press a “report” button on the cord or app to instantly send out a big “five-oh” to all other Escort users in the area, while boosting your Karma quotient, in the process. Nokia Drive with MirrorLink on Toyota Touch Life hands-on (video)

Just a few meters from the entrance to Nokia World at London’s sprawling ExCel Exhibition Centre, we found a Toyota iQ compact with Nokia branding on the door. And in the dash was Toyota’s new Touch Life smartphone integration system, complete with Nokia Drive compatibility and display mirroring via MirrorLink. In addition to mirroring your Symbian Belle (or MeeGo) display on the 7-inch touchscreen, Touch Life also provides a driver-friendly interface, including enormous icons to control music playback, or to place calls to contacts by tapping their name and photo, or by using the jumbo telephone keypad. It also integrates with the Nokia Drive app, with a very simple (and also oversized) navigation interface. The concept is simple: access basic smartphone functions as you drive while limiting distractions. While you’re parked, you’ll have unrestricted access to your phone’s interface, but non-critical features are disabled as you drive.

The demo unit we saw is still a few months away from hitting production, so there were a few hiccups. After connecting the Nokia 701 to the system, the smartphone’s display appeared on the in-dash screen within a few seconds. We had full access to all of the phone’s features until shifting into drive, when a much simpler screen popped up, with Call, Drive and Music modules. Everything worked rather seamlessly until we neared the end of the demo, when an “Enjoy the sound while driving” message appeared on screen, where the navigation window had been just a moment before. There isn’t a firm release date in place, and the demo unit only appears to work with Symbian Belle at the moment — though MeeGo support (and likely Windows Phone as well) will be available after launch. Toyota introduces Touch Life smartphone mirroring system, your Prius and iPhone can become one

If you’re looking to get your smartphone more in-sync with your car, you may want to consider a new Toyota with the Touch Life infotainment system. Given a compatible smartphone / app combo, it can mirror the phone’s display on its 7-inch touchscreen for access to navigation, music or social networking services. Nokia owners can connect their Symbian Belle devices by way of MirrorLink, developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium, in its first deployment by the automotive industry. Apple iPhone (and iPod) faithful will have to install Application Launcher in order to sync up with the infotainment system. If driving distractions are a concern, steering wheel controls play nice with the tech as well — it’s not quite SYNC Applink, but we’ll take it. Toyota promises features and smartphones will continue to be added, but for a current list of compatible cars, devices and apps, check the press release below.

BMW presents car-to-x communication, wants vehicles to talk more (video)

What good is an Ultimate Driving Machine if it can’t get a little help from its friends? A new hazard-dodging system from BMW could help these Bavarian autos get a bit more chatty, each vehicle talking to nearby traffic across long-range wireless networks. In a series of video demonstrations, the car maker shows how the car-to-x system could give advance warnings of traffic, emergency vehicles and weather hazards by enabling one car to beam warnings directly to others. BMW hopes to connect the system to mobile phone networks as latency times improve and possibly even access data from traffic light systems. Sure, GM and Ford got there a bit earlier, but you can see BMW’s implementation demonstrated after the break, and check out the via link for more videos of the world’s most boring game of GTA.
