Apple starts refunding Bumper purchases automagically

Automatic refunds, or so the email says. We’ve been on the receiving end of a deluge of tips this morning pointing out that Apple has begun funneling cash back into its users’ pockets — a most unusual event, to be sure — to live up to its retroactive promise of free Bumpers for all (who buy their iPhone 4 before September 30). If the particular wording is to be trusted, that should mean that even those who haven’t yet bothered to put in a claim, but did purchase a Bumper, will find themselves enriched in due course. Apple estimates this bandaid solution to its antenna problems will cost $175 million in real cash money, but we suspect the biggest price to pay will be in the form of pride and reputation.

Griffin and Chilewich Expand Collection

Chilewich_touch_turquoise.jpg

Gadget-maker Griffin Technology and fabric designer Chilewich Sultan have already partnered on some attractive, tactile iPhone and iPod cases, and today they’re expanding that partnership with a new case. Called the Elan Form Chilewich for iPod Touch, it’s based on the existing iPhone 3GS case. You can find it in three colors: turquoise (shown), aluminum, and gravel.

The Elan Form Chilewich begins with an impact-resistant Griffin polycarbonate shell. Chilewich’s Mini Basketweave woven fabric shell is then wrapped around it, resulting in a case that’s both attractive and durable. Surprisingly for a fabric case, it’s easy to keep clean and will last the life of your player. You can order it at Griffin’s site for $39.99.

The Vapor Case Adds Style and Laser Engraving to your iPhone 4

Vapor - CaseIf you followed the Apple press event and decided that you should probably get a case for your iPhone 4, you could do worse than to pre-order a Vapor iPhone 4 case from ElementCase. The Vapor is machine carved from a solid block of aluminum to form a metal bumper that’s specifically designed for the shape of the iPhone 4, with precision carved openings for the headphone port, microphone and speaker ports, and volume and mute buttons. Since it’s aluminum, it’s light and fits the overall design of the iPhone 4, and a power button was built into the case so it can be turned on and off without having to remove the Vapor.

The finish of the Vapor case is anodized, and while the first iterations are metallic black on black and black on pink, ElementCase expects to release additional colors soon. The side of the aluminum is laser etched with “Vapor” on it, and the company expects to offer custom engraving in the future as well. Best of all, if you’ve been suffering from the “death grip” issue, the inside of the Vapor case is non-conductive, so you won’t lose signal while the aluminum bumper is on your iPhone. ElementCase has the Black/Black and Black/Pink Vapor models available now for $79.95.

Griffin Adds Loop Stand, PowerBlock Plus, Elan Passport Nylon to iPad Lineup of Accessories

Griffin iPad Loop.jpg
Griffin Technology has added several new iPad accessories to the lineup available for Apple’s popular tablet computer.
The Loop ($29.99) is an elegant desktop stand that can hold the iPad in portrait or landscape mode. It works both at a high angle for use  as a digital photo frame or at a low angle for more comfortable onscreen typing. The Loop also has a cushioned cradle and rubber feet to protect both your iPad and your desk from scratches. It is available now at Apple retail stores.
The PowerBlock Plus ($34.99) is an AC wall charger that includes an extra outlet so that you can charge your iPad and another device (even another iPad) at the same time. That also means you won’t have to choose between your lamp or any other electrical device just because you’re running short of power outlets. It will be available from Best Buy in August. A $29.99 universal model of the PowerBlock Plus designed to work with any device that charges via USB is also available at the Griffin online store.
The Elan Passport Nylon ($49.99) is a portfolio-style case for the Apple iPad that features a microsuede lining and an inside pocket for business cards and papers. A tab on the front securely closes the case when you’re on the go. It is available now at the Griffin online store, or you can purchase it from Wal-Mart next month.
Also new to the line is the 3-meter USB to Dock Cable ($29.99) which is now available at Apple retail stores. At almost ten feet long, it will easily bridge the gap between the power outlet and the table you want to put your iPad on when you’re charging it up.

Otterbox iPad Commuter and Defender Cases Available for Pre-Order

OtterBox iPad Defender.jpg
If you’re in the market for a seriously durable case for your Apple iPad, you’ll be glad to know that OtterBox is now taking pre-orders for their new iPad cases.
The $89.95 Defender case offers multiple layers of protection with a high impact polycarbonate shell on the inside and a durable silicone skin on the outside. The case has an integrated fold-out stand and a removable door that allows access to the iPad dock. A snap-on front cover provides exceptional screen protection while the iPad is not in use. When you need to use the device, it snaps securely to the back of the case for hassle-free storage.
The $64.95 Commuter Case is slim and slightly less rugged than the Defender case, while still offering superior protection for your iPad. It has a polycarbonate outer shell and an inner lining of silicone to protect your iPad from drops and scratches. A removable dock door allows you to dock your iPad without having to remove it from the case.
Both cases feature silicone plugs, which help to protect the headphone jack and sync port from moisture and dust while also keeping them accessible. The Defender and Commuter iPad cases are now available for pre-order on the OtterBox Web site, and are expected to ship within seven to ten days.

ArkHippo: at last, a cure for your iPhone’s portability

Ever wish your iPhone was less pocket-friendly and more throw-across-the-room-friendly? Then the ArkHippo may just be the case for you. Made of a proprietary material “similar to Crocs shoes,” the case (said to be “coming soon”) promises to let you comfortably rest your iPhone against your shoulder, prop it up to watch a video, or simply toss it around to your heart’s content. Still not sold on it? Head on past the break for a quick video — and don’t worry, we’re pretty sure the final version won’t be made of foam.

OtterBox Launches Six Commuter and Defender Cases

OtterCommuter.jpg

You’ve got to keep that investment safe. Smartphone are expensive, and so easy to drop. The only thing you can do is buy a good sturdy case. Helping out is OtterBox, which now offers the Commuter case for the LG Ally, LG GW620, HTC Imagio, Nokia X6, and Samsung Moment. The Commuter series is a mix of substance and style. A silicone skin wraps the device for shock absorption, and a tough polycarbonate shell snaps around that.

The Defender series has been expanded to cover the HTC Hero. The Defender is extra rugged, and also includes silicone and polycarbonate layers. This case comes with a ratcheting belt clip. The Commuter cases list for $34.95 and the Defender for $49.95.

Keep your iPad Safe from Summer Downpours with the GO! Sleeve

GO iPad Sleve.jpg
Shin Norie has just announced the GO! iPad Sleeve, a protective sleeve made out of a waterproof all-weather fabric. Cross-Climate performance fabric has been engineered to be soft and breathable, but also to keep water out while allowing the escape of any heat generated by the iPad while it’s within the sleeve.
The sleeve is secured with a Velcro flap and a ZipSeal closure that completely closes the opening in a fashion similar to those ever-present sandwich bags so many of us use to pack our lunches.
Generously sized to accommodate the iPad, even if it is already inside a case as large as the Apple iPad Case, the GO! iPad Sleeve provides extra protection with foam padding and a microfleece lining that helps to clean the screen of the device every time it is inserted or removed from the sleeve.
The GO! iPad Sleeve is available in either a red or gray stripe design, or a red or gray arrow design. The company also offers free one-color personalization on the sleeve, which includes text and/or graphics. It goes for $49.95 with free standard worldwide shipping at the Shin Norie online store.

iPhone 4 gets a $1 alternative to pricey Bumpers

If you ask us, Apple should be giving away free bumpers, lollipops, and anything else it can think of to keep its otherwise loyal followers from revolting. But the Great Bitten One isn’t doing any one of those things, and most of us are stuck either having to pony up $30 for the official salvation from self-inflicted signal harm or looking out to the grey markets. Entering this morose situation with a bit of ingenuity is Oliver Nelson, who alerts us to the fact that rubber wristbands of the sort your favorite cyclist wears are apparently an almost perfect fit when stretched around the 4’s antennae. He advises that a 1.125-inch long by 0.125-inch wide incision (into the unstretched band) is necessary to keep the 30-pin port and speakers open, but otherwise it seems like a pretty effortless and dirt cheap way to avoid all this drama.

Magellan’s waterproof Toughcase wraps GPS module, extended battery around your iPhone

There are iPhone cases, and then there’s Magellan‘s waterproof Toughcase. Priced at $199.99, it’s actually just as expensive as a new iPhone 4 on contract, and double the price of an iPhone 3GS (which it actually houses). So, what does two Benjamins get you? Most would argue “not nearly enough,” but argonauts may beg to differ. The case meets IPX-7 waterproof standards, enabling it to be submerged at a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes, and there’s also an integrated 1,840mAh battery that’s able to “double the life” of your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or second / third-generation iPod touch. Moreover, there’s a built-in high sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS chipset for superior GPS reception, and nothing here prevents consumers from accessing the touchscreen. ‘Course, the sex appeal of your iDevice goes right out of the window once you strap this monster on, and there’s no official support for Apple’s newest iPhone, but it’s hard to knock the approach here.
