Sony poster at CES shows unannounced, extremely slim-looking phone (update: probably the Anzu)

Sony’s CES banners have been unfurled around the Las Vegas Convention Center here and one of them has a particularly alluring, and particularly skinny, phone to show us. The above image of half a touchscreen handset (more closeup photography of which you’ll find in the gallery below) shows a Sony Ericsson brand and what looks like a 3.5mm headphone jack — the latter of which would suggest that this phone is no more than six or seven millimeters thick. Even more enticing is the promise of “more entertainment at the touch of a button,” suggesting some processing and graphics firepower contained within as well — could it be SE’s answer to the dual-core LG Optimus 2X? We get the feeling we’ll love this thing whatever the hell’s inside it.

Update: Closer investigation of the imagery has led us to believe this is probably the Anzu / X12 that we first saw back in November. That device’s claim to fame was a 4.3-inch display allied to a “very, very thin” profile.

Ford set to unveil Focus Electric at CES, which just so happens to be where we are

Focus electric

The North American International Auto show is one week away, the place where many auto makers domestic and foreign will choose to unveil their next hot happening. Not Ford — at least, not this year. The company has had a significant presence here at CES for the past few years and, in 2011, it’s going to really ramp things up by announcing a whole new car. Or, at least, an electric version of an existing one. We don’t know the details yet (other than it having a silly glowing plug door), but there’s an all-electric Focus set to be unveiled at 11:00am local time (that’s 2:00 in the afternoon east coasters) on Friday. The conference will be livestreaming if you want to play along at home, but rest assured we’ll be there too.

Joby Releases GorillaMobile Ori and Yogi iPad Stands

GorillaMobile Ori - GorillaMobile Yogi

The iPad stand market is more than cluttered, but Joby, makers of the GorillaPod flexible tripod and the GorillaTorch flexible lamp, is planning to shake it up a little. In advance of CES in Las Vegas, Joby has announced the GorillaMobile Ori and the GorillaMobile Yogi, two new iPad stands designed for two different types of users. Pricing and availability haven’t been announced, but the two cases will be on display at CES this week.
The GorillaMobile Ori is a combination iPad case and stand, and goes from being a firm folio-style case that you can slide into a bag or tuck under your arm to a stand that the iPad sits on top of as if it’s on display. The Ori is made of an aluminum/polypropylene composite material that’s strong and light.
The GorillaMobile Yogi features the flexible legs that Joby fans have come to expect in their products, and allows you to clip the stand onto your IPad and then bend the flexible legs to wrap around the back of a car seat, prop up your iPad at just the right angle, or make sure your iPad is stable enough to use on an uneven surface.

Magellan reveals Roadmate 9055 and Explorist 310 GPS units

Remember that Roadmate 9055 that popped up in the FCC’s database back in September? Looks like Magellan’s using CES to officially launch it. Listing for $299.99 here in the States, this monstrous 7-inch navigator packs a WVGA touchscreen, Bluetooth and a lifetime supply of free traffic updates. It’s preloaded with maps of the 50 US states, Canada and Puerto Rico, not to mention six million points-of-interest, loads of content from the AAA Tourbook Guide (including Diamond ratings and descriptions for US and Canada), and a roadside assistance feature that provides your precise location in case you need to tell it to some fine man or woman on the other end of an emergency call. If you’re more of an argonaut, the Explorist 310 handheld navigator is likely more your speed. This one’s retailing for $199.99, and it includes a 2.2-inch color display, a rugged, waterproof enclosure, a SiRFstar III GPS chipset and a slew of features catering to the outdoor navigation market — things like waypoint creation, a premium, preloaded World Edition map, active tracking, and track summary. There’s also 500MB of user-accessible memory (for adding extra maps), and we’re told that two AA batteries can power it for an astounding 18 hours. So, where’s life planning to take you?

Star Wars Blu-ray to get a ‘most impressive’ announcement at CES from Vader, Fox & Panasonic

Seeing that Lucas & Co. already announced that the Star Wars series would be coming to Blu-ray we’re not exactly sure what will be announced on Thursday at Panasonic’s CES booth — please, please, please don’t say it’s another Avatar-style two year pack-in exclusive — but the invite promises it will be most impressive. Darth Vader and a number of Stormtroopers will be on hand and you know we’ll be ready to pass all information revealed onto you (given the parties involved we’re leaning towards some news about a home release of the 3D converted flicks), even if it’s just that ol’ George has decided to release the prequels ahead of the original trilogy.

Garmin’s nuvi 2400 pairs a 5-inch screen with voice control, isn’t a phone

You don’t need us to tell you that phones are posing a huge threat to the dedicated navigation device market, but Garmin isn’t giving up without a fight (or without hedging its bets). It just announced its nüvi 2400 series of “large format” PNDs, with 5-inch screens and a wealth of features. Standouts include voice control and some serious routing capabilities based on “trafficTrends” and “myTrends,” which are exactly what they sound like. Prices start at $250, with all the features available but except for traffic and free map updates. At the $350 mark you can get lifetime map and traffic, traffic adapter . The whole line should be out in Q1 of this year.

Snapstick and D-Link start web-to-TV SplitMedia trials this month

It’s hardly a done deal when a relationship is described as in “talks.” Nevertheless, D-Link and Snapstick are definitely working together to evaluate Snapstick’s SplitMedia technology. Snapstick, as you’ll recall, lets you snap any web content (with a focus on video services from Hulu, YouTube and the like) over WiFi from your smartphone to a D-Link box connected to a TV. It works from a laptop too, presumably without all the wrist-flicking. The private trial launches to users later this month but we hope to have a demonstration for you from CES in Las Vegas last this week. Until then, check the video demonstration after the break.

iPad Controller Uses Suction Cup, Looks Funny

fling_ipad_controller.jpg

It only stands to reason that the company that brought the world the Pogo stylus for the iPhone and iPad would be the same to introduce a game controller for Apple’s popular tablet.

The new Fling controller from Ten One Design sticks to the iPad via suction cup and works with any games for the tablet that utilize a virtual joystick–games like Meteor Blitz, Super Megaworm, and Across Age. You stick your thumb in the middle of the thing and get down to business.

The Fling comes with either Ninja or Ultraviolet designs. It ships with a microfiber carrying case, which also serves as a screen cleaner. The accessory was announced today at CES. It’ll start shipping at the end of the month, but you can pre-order it now for $24.99.

Garmin GTU 10 GPS locator tracks whatever you want, wherever AT&T’s coverage goes

GTU 10

GPS is that stuff that gets you home when you have no idea where you are, but it can also be the thing that helps you find those dealies you left… somewhere. At least, it can be if you have a GTU 10 GPS module from Garmin attached to said dealies. It’s a little integrated unit that has a wireless connection and can, for better or worse, dial itself to AT&T‘s data network. It updates its location in regularly and allows you to see just where that is via the Garmin Tracking site. Or, you can download the Garmin Tracker app to your mobile device (of undisclosed provenance) if you prefer to use your active voice, enabling you to get turn-by-turn directions right to your wayward GTU. It’ll even fire you an e-mail or a TXT if whatever it is you’ve attached it to strays too far outside of your safe zone. The GTU 10 looks to be available now at $199.99, which includes one year of tracking. You’re stuck paying $49.99 per year after that — or, you know, losing your stuff.

Samsung’s SH100 Wi-Fi-Enabled Camera Offers Remote Android Control

samsung sh100.jpgDigital cameras with Wi-Fi capability is nothing new, but, today at the Consumer Electronics Showcase, Samsung announced a new model, the SH100, that has a very impressive Wi-Fi connectivity feature. Like the other Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, the Samsung SH100 lets you upload photos and video directly to Facebook, Picasa, and YouTube. What makes the SH100 stand out is that you can pair it with a Samsung Galaxy S phone and use the smartphone to remotely preview the frame, zoom in and out, take the picture, and geotag it.

The GPS feature is a nice way to remind you exactly where you were when you took the photo. The addition of the integration with the Galaxy S makes taking group shots easier. It means no more running between your camera and your friends to set up the perfect shot.

The built-in Wi-Fi can automatically back up your photo to your PC. You can use DLNA to connect wirelessly to your HDTV and see your photos and videos right away. You can also send photos directly from the camera to individual e-mail addresses. If you’re worried about the time it takes to upload and process large files, the SH100 comes with an account with mobile hotspot provider Boingo, which gives you access to over 200,00 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world.

Oh, and as for the specs, it features a 14.2-megapixel CCD sensor, a 3-inch LCD display, and a 5X optical zoom. The SH100 will be available for $199.99 in March. Check out the full press release for more info.
