Sony PS3 Slim shows up for pre-order at Kmart, $300

Our suspicions about that earlier Kmart ad were spot-on. The link is now hot with specs showing a PS3 Slim priced at $300 which includes Blu-ray, a 120GB hard disk, DualShock3 controller, and HDMI output with 1080p support. It’s listed with an August 24 release date which seems a bit eager to us. The Kmart site is updating which means that some of these details could change (like the price and date) but this seems like a definite for announcement later today at Gamescon.

Update: Sears has the same offer and date.

Xbox Micro makes the Wii look overweight

Welcome to Micro Saturday at Engadget! In the absence of hard hitting stories and shocking exposés, we thought we’d turn to the lighter — and thinner — side of the news. Enter the Xbox Micro, a 1-inch thick celebration of all that is good and holy about the world of DIY mods. It took six months to make, with a few clever design decisions along the way, but it looks good enough to make even the ninja-black Wii suck its gut in. Comparison pics with the original behemoth are after the break, and hit the read link to see the exposed guts of this little beauty.

[Thanks, Matt and Jesse]

Portable SNES mod is slick enough to hit retail

Sometimes mods go to such lengths that words like ‘homebrewed’ and ‘DIY’ no longer do them justice. Presenting the Nintendo SNES Portable. Not the first, and probably not the last of its kind, this bad boy mobilizes Nintendo’s venerable console with a few buttons from a PSOne controller and a ridiculously detailed skinning job — yes, even the packaging gets a makeover. The sheer nostalgic overload at the sight of it must be worth something to Nintendo, no? There’s not a person, with both a heart and a history of gaming, that can glance at that bulky unwieldy-looking thing and not break into a wistful smile. Really, we dare you. More snaps after the break.

European retailer hacks €100 from PlayStation 3 in run-up to gamescom

If you know anything about European retailer Fnac, you know it’s not the go-to place for bargains. However, it’s this very outlet that’s now selling an 80GB PlayStation 3 bundle (which includes the console, a single controller and inFamous) for €100 less than its “everyday low price” as of yesterday. Of course, one major French retailer slashing the price on a system that’s long overdue for a break isn’t reason in and of itself reason to believe anything’s on the horizon, but pair this up with everything else we’ve heard over the past few weeks, and we’d say all the vague omens are pointing to a leaner, cheaper and altogether more dashing PS3 on August 18th. In our magical fantasy land, anyway.

Update: Our friends at Engadget Spanish just let us know that there’s been a price drop in Spain as well. Getting warmer…

[Thanks, Nelson]

Neo Geo mini-arcade consoles fit on a bookshelf, set our hearts a-flutter

We’ve variously lusted after a number of homebrew stand-up arcade consoles recently, but what about those of us whose free space is better measured in inches than in feet? A gentleman in Spain who calls himself Pocket Lucho has been building Neo Geo mini-consoles for a while now, and has recently demonstrated his latest creation on “the YouTubes” for our viewing pleasure. With the sort of attention to detail that makes these things as attractive as they are playable (including a coin slot and light-up marquee) the devices feature a video out and a second controller input for bringing a friend in on the action. Hit that read link for the detailed step-by-step, but not before peeping those videos after the break.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 Slim to debut August 18th at Cologne gamescom?

Whoa, Nelly! No sooner than we hear that Sony is informing Japanese retailers that the 80GB PS3 model won’t be shipping any longer after August 8th, along comes this to stoke the raging rumor fires once more. In a one-two punch that just can’t be coincidental, Sony has also hacked $50 off of its 160GB PlayStation 3 bundle from Amazon. But really, it’s the report from RTLinfo that has us most excited. According to it, the Sony elite are informing European retailers of an impending €100 price slashing on the 80GB console, which will dovetail nicely into the sudden and not-at-all unexpected debut of the PS3 Slim at the gamescom expo in Cologne, Germany. Reportedly, the willowy unit — which shouldn’t differ much in terms of specifications and features — will be properly introduced to the world during Sony’s pre-event press conference on August 18th. Obviously we’ve no way to confirm or deny just yet, but given everything else that has transpired over the past few months, we’d say an official reveal is definitely due. What say you, rumormongers?

80GB PlayStation 3 on the outs in Japan, PS3 Slim looking all the more likely

We know the whole “where there’s smoke, there’s hotness” argument is played out, but it sure feels like the pieces are coming together here. With Sony’s 20GB, 40GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 already a part of history, it’s just the 80GB and 160GB models holding down the fort. After August 9th, however, it seems that just the latter will be representin’ in Japan. The notice above essentially informs retailer 7-Eleven (don’t hate) that no more orders for the black, white and silver 80GB PS3 will be accepted after Sunday due to a request from “the manufacturer.” The note also instructs store owners to take down the in-story displays for the 80GB model, giving us all the reason we need to believe that a slimmed down version of the console is within reach. Of course, that’s just whimsical speculation, but we just can’t talk our hearts into listening to our heads on this one.

Nintendo finally sees Wii demand slowing, calls iPhone a DS / DSi competitor

While it seemed that all was going well for the Big N, it looks like those jovial times are finally coming to a (temporary) end. In an earnings report filed today, the company posted a 66 percent fall in quarterly operating profit on “slowing demand for its Wii console and a stronger yen.” It’s not so much the profit slide that’s surprising, but the sudden admission that Wii demand has finally (finally!) slowed from a raging boil to simply piping hot definitely caught us off guard. Still, Nintendo maintained that it would sell 26 million Wii consoles before the year was out alongside 30 million DS handhelds, the latter of which has seen momentum slow due to “increased competition in the handheld business from Apple’s iPhone.” Now, we’ve known for some time that the suits in Cupertino have always viewed the iPhone as a game console, but to hear it called out as such from an entity not named Apple is another matter entirely. Maybe it should reconsider that whole “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” thing? Nah.

PlayOn media server now serving Wii customers (in beta, anyway)

We knew good and well that the fine folks over at MediaMall were toiling away in an attempt to bring internet TV content from YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, CBS, CNN and a host of other sources to Nintendo’s white-hot Wii, but there’s just nothing like hearing that intentions have become reality. Based on an email from MediaMall support to a particularly curious user, the “latest version of PlayOn includes a beta version of Wii functionality in it.” Naturally, the company’s doing its darnedest to keep this under wraps for now, but we’re eager to get legions of Wii users testing it out and reporting back with performance evaluations. The note does mention that quality will be lower than on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 due to the inherit hardware limitations on Nintendo’s baby, but hey, you knew that going in, right? Hop on past the break for the letter in its entirety, which includes instructions on getting this going on your console.

Papercraft NES and Dreamcast cost less, play just as many cutting edge games

Finally, your lovingly prepared SNES model is getting some well-heeled new friends to hang out with. Cubeecraft is a website wholly dedicated to the paper-based recreation of cultural icons, and it’s prepared a pair of exquisitely detailed clones of the NES and Dreamcast. While some such projects might require patience and finesse, putting together the above templates doesn’t even ask for any glue or tape. So what are you waiting for, grab your scissors and run to the links below for full 150dpi printouts — just be sure to make the time for some imaginary Contra action afterwards.
