Brain-Replacing Core i3 IdeaPad for $500

When I was your age, people wrote down our ideas on a piece of paper. Or better yet, THEY REMEMBERED THEM IN THEIR HEADS. But now, in these ruinous times, everyone has some electronic whirlydoodle to log their insignificant thoughts in. More »

Creep-Friendly Surveillance System for $190

I have an awesome idea. I’m going to buy an apartment, I’m thinking probably in Miami or Tampa cause the weather’s great. And then I’m going to outfit the whole house with hidden ‘security’ cams to PROTECT it. You know from creeps on the outside so I can creep all I want on the inside. And then I’m going to get two really hot girls, preferably in their young 20’s and definitely from a different country to rent my beach-side apartment and then…oh wait…shit nevermind! More »

Android deals just got weird: free phones for pants, free flights for phones

Next time you’re trying on a pair of (non musical) jeans, why not snag a free Android phone to help fill their roomy pockets? And while you’re shopping for that big trip you’ve got planned, you can let “HTC Airlines” book that flight for you. Honest, it’s no trouble at all. Well, it’s a little trouble. Wet Seal’s “try on some pants and get a free phone” deal comes attached to a two-year contract, and those flights? Still free, but only if you happen to be picking up your HTC Status or Salsa in Germany. You didn’t expect them to offer a free ride to just anybody, anywhere, did you?

Nice Laptop At Walmart For $398 Starting November 5

This article was written on October 29, 2006 by CyberNet.

Another holiday season is approaching us and there is nothing like the mobs of people that go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. That day is typically referred to Black Friday and it earned its name because that is the one day where most retail stores are guaranteed not to be in the red (a.k.a. guaranteed to make money).

Everyone wants to know what the deals are going to be like before hand so that they can scope out and plan their attack shopping…that is why a site called BFAds.net exists. People send in scanned images of advertisements for the sales that will occur after Thanksgiving. At this point they don’t really have much but in the next two weeks I’m sure they will get a lot of submissions!

Walmart Laptop Well, the big deal last year was the $378 laptop that Walmart offered which didn’t have any really amazing specs (which is obvious for the price). This year, however, they will be offering a $398 laptop starting on November 5 and going until November 11. So this isn’t a Black Friday sale but is amazing enough to be one. Here is a list of the specs for Compaq Presario V5305WM laptop:

  • 2.00 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron™ Processor 3300+
  • 512MB 333MHz DDR (upgradable to 2GB)
  • ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP (128MB)
  • 60GB 5400RPM Hard-Drive
  • 24X DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
  • 15.4” WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen (1280 x 800) Display
  • Integrated 56k modem, 100mb Network Card and 54g 802.11b/g Wireless Connectivity
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (Not PCMCIA)
  • 10.2″(L) x 14.1″(W) x 1.38″(min H) /1.77″(max H)
  • 6.4 lbs

There is a limit of 1 per customer and each store has to have at least 15 in stock…and once employees get their hands on them I’m sure there will be at least 2 left. :)

So it looks like some of the fun may be starting a little early this year. If you’re scouting out good deals then you should subscribe to the RSS or email list that BFAds.net has. Also, as some of the sweet electronic deals emerge I’ll probably let everyone know here.

Nokia Perks leaked, ready to take on Groupon (video)

Nokia Perks

If you’re looking to score deals and discounts online you’ve got plenty of choices — Groupon, LivingSocial, GiltCity, Google Offers — and yet, Nokia seems to think the world needs one more such service. The sleuths over at ZOMGitsCj spotted a video on Vimeo from the struggling handset maker (since removed) introducing Nokia Perks. The premise is pretty simple — pop over to perks.nokia.com (currently offline), browse for deals and coupons, and click save on any you care to cash in. The discounts you pick are automatically sent to your phone and, just like Groupon, all you need to do is show the barcode to the register jockey. As a nice added touch, Perks also pops up directions to the store in the mapping app. For those who prefer motion visuals, a vid’s hosted up after the break.

[Thanks, Oliver]

$400 Dell Vostro Laptop … Without the Line Sitting

This article was written on November 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Vostro 1000 Dell just posted a $400 deal for the Vostro 1000 laptop computer, with Windows XP Home or with Vista Home Basic. That’s the same price of both the Asus Eee PC and the OLPC, which are no where near full-featured computers.

That magic price tag can also save you a lot of frustration if you were planning on getting one of the similarly priced laptops being offered the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday). You can order the Dell from the comfort of your own home without needing to sit in line for countless hours, just to find out that you didn’t get to the store early enough. We’ve been there and done that, and I would much rather have ordered online than sit in line.

And the specs? For the price I was rather surprised at how good they were:

  • AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-53 (1.7GHz/512KB)
  • 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Anti-Glare Display
  • 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 Dimm
  • 120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
  • 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double-layer DVD+R Write Capability
  • ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory™ (integrated)
  • Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card

It’s important to note that this laptop is available through the Dell Small Business site, but under their terms it seems like anything qualifies for Small Business. I’ve ordered from the Small Business section for years, and when asked for the name of the company I just use my own name. I’ve never been questioned about it. Heck, if you sell stuff on eBay every now and then it’s practically a “side” business.

Note: Shipping is free, but taxes will be applied.

Free TaxCut Premium & Deduction Pro Software!

This article was written on March 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

TaxCutThis is obviously only important for United States residents who still have to file taxes (which are due April 17, 2007), but it is quite a steal that you should scoop up as soon as you can! H&R Block is currently offering TaxCut Premium and Deduction Pro software at no cost to you!

I finished filling everything out in under a minute so it isn’t time consuming. They do ask for personal information (such as address, name, email, etc…) but you can fill in bogus info like we’re used to doing on these types of forms. Here’s what you have to do:

NOTE: I had to use Internet Explorer because Firefox wouldn’t work after step 4.

  1. Go to the H&R Block site and select either the Mac/Windows version from the drop-down menu. Then click Add to Cart.
  2. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this page and click No Thanks.
  3. Click Remove next to the option for Extended Download Protection which normally costs $3.99. Then hit  Continue Checkout.
  4. Enter in your personal information. You have to enter in a valid City/State/Zip combination because it will check that. The email address is not used so you can just make something up for that. Also makeup some kind of password at the bottom. Press Continue Checkout.
  5. Choose your county and hit Submit.
  6. Click Place Order and you are then presented with the download links which looks something like this:

Tax Software

I have downloaded the software, but I have not installed it yet. It doesn’t look like it comes with the state software because the product links to just the Federal version, but I can’t complain since this is free! Now I’m glad I was procrastinating doing my taxes because I thought I was going to have to buy some software. :)

Thanks to the anonymous tipster who sent this in!
