Dell Streak gets SNES controller dock, navigates owner through Yoshi's Island (video)

Who’d have thought that a little thing like the inclusion of USB Host capabilities could open the door to such wonders as an SNES controller dock? That’s exactly what we have here. The Dell Streak‘s ability to work with standard USB keyboards has enabled it to also work with a suitably modified SNES controller, having had a cablectomy and the addition of a PDMI connector on top. That, with the addition of a USB board, turns the controller into a keyboard and, hey presto, it’s Super Mario World time. Modder 0TheRain0 did the handiwork here, which you can watch him demonstrate after the break.

Dell Inspiron Duo flips its lid on official video

Blink really slowly and you might miss it. Seriously, though, Dell’s 35-second Inspiron Duo teaser plays up the tablet angle for quite a bit — even prominently showing off a JBL speaker dock — before getting to the really awesome part. Oh, you know, where it totally flips its screen over and becomes a netbook. Coming soon, and last we heard it was by the end of the year, so that gives them around 57 days to make it happen. Video after the break.

T-Mobile moves up to 75 live HSPA+ markets, says it’s running the largest ‘4G’ network in the US

T-Mobile is announcing this evening that it’s now got 75 live HSPA+ markets online, with coverage for roughly 200 million Americans up and running by the end of 2010. That footprint will start off at a theoretical max downlink of 21Mbps, but the carrier will be looking to scale that to 42Mbps in 2011 with the capacity to upgrade to 84 and 168Mbps down the road — all without ever worrying about LTE. The veracity of T-Mobile’s insistence that this is a “4G” network remains debatable — particularly in light of the ITU’s ruling that only LTE-Advanced and WiMAX 2 qualify — but then again, that same ruling would mean that neither Sprint, Verizon, nor T-Mobile really have 4G up and running in the strictest of terms, and it’s hard to argue that these guys are pushing speeds that meet or exceed what either LTE or WiMAX can offer today.

To that end, the carrier is kicking off a new television ad campaign today where it proudly boasts that it’s operating the nation’s largest 4G network, which is sure to ruffle some feathers and set the stage for some drama-filled mudslinging among the big boys as they ramp up their next-gen networks across the country. New markets include Chicago, Colorado Springs, Ft. Wayne, Louisville, Raleigh-Durham, and Wilmington, NC, and new devices include the myTouch 4G — officially launching tomorrow — and the Dell Mini 10 4G, which as you can probably guess is a garden-variety Mini 10 with HSPA+ compatibility on the AWS band. Follow the break for T-Mobile’s full press release.

Dell Venue hits FCC again, this time with a soothing 1700MHz aroma

We’ve already seen one variant of the Dell Venue — formerly Thunder — pass through the FCC, but that was a WCDMA Band II / V version ripe for use on AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. What about T-Mobile? No worries! Dell’s got your back, it seems, with a second version going under model code “V03B002” that features 1700MHz AWS 3G in place of 850 and 1900MHz. Of course, you might recall that the Streak got approval in an AWS version that has yet to see the light of day, so we wouldn’t call this a slam dunk for retail availability… but it’s a start.

Michael Dell: Developing Windows smartphones ‘easier’ than Android

Not much detail here, just some vagaries uttered by Michael Dell at an event in Hong Kong. According to Reuters, Mr. Dell said that it’s easier to develop smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows operating system than Google’s Android. Something that he, or at least his developers, should know something about having dabbled a bit on both platforms. Unfortunately, that’s all we’ve got — hopefully more details will be revealed later to give this some context. Switching gears, he also said that Dell would be launching a “significant number” of tablet PC models next year. Next year huh? What happened to Dell’s 7-inch Looking Glass tablet that was coming in “a few weeks” now more than one month ago?

Dell Venue hits the FCC: is this the Thunder’s new name?

Yes, that’s right, just “Venue,” not Venue Pro — and from a glance, it looks to us like this might be the new name for the Thunder Android phone we played with a little while ago judging by this FCC filing that just crossed the wires. As far as we can tell, this thing is basically a carbon copy of the Venue Pro, except it’s running Android instead of Windows Phone 7 and drops the sliding portrait keyboard in favor of a full-touch setup. Notably, the curved glass 4.1-inch AMOLED display carries over, so that should make the design nerds in the audience swoon a bit. Additionally, turns out there’s a Bluetooth SIG certification under the same model name — V03B — that confirms the display’s specs and the fact that it’s a “smartphone” (whew!). Stay tuned on this one — something tells us we won’t be waiting terribly long for an announce.

ASUS Eee Pad EP101TC getting Tegra 2 treatment ahead of March launch?

More from DigiTimes this morning and its chatty sources within NVIDIA and Taiwanese supply chains. First up is talk that ASUS’ 10-inch Eee Pad — presumably, the Android loving EP101TC said to cost less than $399 — will launch in March of 2011 with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 taking care of the processing duties. DigiTimes‘ sources also remind us that Tegra 2 tablets are on the way from Dell, Samsung, MSI, and Toshiba in addition to smartphones from ASUS, Motorola, and LG. Good to know, but for as long as Tegra 2 has been discussed, we’ve yet to see the SoC ship inside anything worth getting too excited over. And don’t even mention the Boxee Box, they switched to Intel at the last minute, remember? Maybe Dell’s Looking Glass tablet will change all that when it launches any day now.

Dell Venue Pro gets Expansys listing: £499.99 for November 8th

Don’t take this as the gospel, but online retailer Expansys has gone ahead and listed Dell’s Venue Pro — affectionately known as “the Windows Phone 7 device with a portrait QWERTY slider” — with pricing and availability date in tow. Which, if you’re wondering, is £499.99 (or about $783 in US dollars, when crudely converted) and Monday, November 8th, respectively. That’s just over two weeks away, which means if it is true, you won’t have long to wait… and if it’s not true, you’ll know soon enough, anyway.

Wal-Mart Tests “Solution Centers by Dell”

This article was written on July 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

walmart and dell solution.pngDell and Wal-Mart are getting friendly with each other by teaming up to offer “Geek Squad” like services at select Wal-Mart stores. Best Buy has done well with their tech services that the Geek Squad offers, and Wal-Mart and Dell are expecting their solution centers will be a great opportunity for them to meet the needs of their customers who want technology in their homes but aren’t quite sure how to set-it-up or manage it.

At this point, there are only 15 planned “Solution Centers by Dell,” as they are being called, and they will be found in the Dallas, Texas area. Services that they’ll offer include set-up of high-definition TVs and home theater installations, computer repair, and consulting and set-up of wireless technology. If all goes well with their test-run, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wal-Mart and Dell expand their services and open solution centers around the country.

Dell posted about their solution center concept on their Direct2Dell blog and said “These services will be available on Dell and other branded systems and include things like home television installations, wireless network set-up, computer upgrades, services designed to protect computers, and in-home training.”

It’ll definitely be interesting to see if the demand is there from Wal-Mart customers. It could certainly help Wal-Mart in the customer satisfaction area if they’re able to do it right. Wal-Mart has started to sell more of the high-end electronics including expensive HD TV’s, so they just might have the right crowd willing to pay for support services. Did we mention that their prices are competitive and actually cheaper than Geek Squad? One example is for the installation of computer memory. In-store it will cost $29 at Wal-Mart and $39 at Best Buy. If the consumer chooses to have it done in-home it is $99 through Wal-Mart and $139 through Best Buy.

Dell marketing makeover simplifies brands, kills off Adamo altogether

We knew something was going on with Dell’s branding with the resurrection of the XPS laptop line, and this morning we caught up with a few of the company’s executives to learn all about the entire restructuring. As you can see above, there will now be three core brands — Inspiron, XPS and Alienware — all focusing on different “performance seekers.” However, you’ll notice that Adamo is nowhere to be found on that flow chart. Turns out, the sneaky disappearance of the Adamo XPS from Dell’s site hasn’t exactly been a coincidence — it’s completely killing off the premium brand and has actually tamped down volumes of the super thin machines. Now, that doesn’t mean systems like the original Adamo and the Adamo XPS won’t exist ever again as Dell VP Ed Boyd tells us similar products will be coming to the XPS line early next year. Simplifying the brands sure does make a lot of sense to us — all the Adamo XPS, Studio XPS, Studio laptops have seriously confused us over the last couple of years — but it’s all part of a larger marketing campaign that will attempt to move Dell away from being a low cost brand and instead portray the company as providing choice — a campaign Dell CMO Paul-Henri Ferrand told Reuters will ultimately cost hundreds of millions of dollars. We look forward to seeing what you’ve got Dell, but all we know is that we’re finally going to say the following words with affirmation: “rest in peace, Adamo.”
