How Beyonce Is Bigger Than Hurricanes, Earthquakes and SuperBowl Sunday

When I was a child, there was a number that crudely measured how many people paid attention to something. It was called the Nielsen rating. Perhaps you remember it. Today it’s an unimportant relic that only reveals what was happening. More »

Facebook and social networks making it harder to be an undercover cop

We’ve all seen countless numbers of spy movies where the main character uses a fake identity to get close to their target. This sort of work doesn’t just happen in James Bond movies; covert police and intelligence operations do it all the times, and sometimes immerse themselves into a community for years. Sony Ericsson updates Xperia line with the latest Gingerbread goods

Android update junkies are in for a treat from Sony Ericsson. The handset maker’s serving up the freshest batch of Gingerbread to its Xperia line of smartphones starting this October. Bundled in to this 2.3.4 rollout are a bunch of OEM enhancements, bringing along deeper Facebook integration that’ll let you like and share your app discoveries with friends, and “3D sweep panorama technology,” so you can snap those self-portraits for 3DTV viewing. SE’s also thrown in a native screen capture function and, of course, there’s Google Talk with Video Chat. The Neo V will be the first phone out of the launch gate with these baked-in tweaks, but if you’ve got a beefier Xperia device, it’s probably better just to wait.

Facebook Will Kill Photo Filters for Everyone

The NYT reports Facebook tried to buy Instagram. Instagram said no. So, screw you, Instagram—Facebook’s going to rip it off and do it itself. This means photo filters for everyone! Which is exactly why photo filters are doomed. More »

Facebook sets sights on Instagram users with photo filter integration

What now Instagram? You wouldn’t sell to Facebook and now ol’ Zucks is moving on without you. That’s right, friends… the social network genius himself is scheming alongside his engineers to integrate photo filters within the company’s mobile application. The CEO hopes to lure users away from the popular photography app and keep them tethered to his site via mobile handset. Apparently the tech has been ready for a bit, but the boss wants his team to add more editing options before the feature is released into the wild.

Ticketmaster’s interactive seat map brings Facebook stalking to concert venues

You desperately want to attend Katy Perry’s raucous San Antonio concert, but your kid sister has absolutely zero interest in tagging along, and the mere thought of going stag strikes fear into your heart. All seems lost, but worry not — because Ticketmaster and Facebook have just joined forces to create a new feature that weds concert-going with social networking. As of today, users purchasing tickets to select events can easily find out whether any of their Facebook friends are also attending and where they’re seated. All you have to do is connect to Ticketmaster with your Facebook account, find your concert of choice and use the interactive venue map to tag your own seats, or to see those of online friends who’ve already tagged themselves. From there, you can buy tickets right next to your intended targets and act totally surprised when you bump into them at the show. For now, the feature is only available for 300 venues (encompassing some 9,000 events), but you can find more information in the video and press release after the break.

Nokia to announce Symbian Belle update on Wednesday, crafts a countdown timer

Well, that must be embarrassing: Nokia gets a fancy countdown clock set up on its Facebook page as a teaser for something new on Symbian, and the file it set up still says “belle_fb_TeaserMain” in it. It doesn’t anymore, but the cat’s already out of the bag; on Wednesday morning Espoo will most likely unveil Belle, its forthcoming bump up from Symbian Anna. We’re unsure of the exact details that’ll be shared, though we’ve already seen enough of the new update to know what to expect: with a couple lengthy videos, multitudes of screenshots and a leaked version of Belle floating around somewhere, there isn’t much of a mystery left to shed light on. That said, we’re still hoping we’ll see some device announcements as well as dates and device compatibility. Perhaps Mr. Elop just wants us to think it’s Belle, in which case this would be the best teaser of all.
