Leak: AT&T’s Confidential 4G LTE and T-Mobile Plans

Last week, a partly redacted document about the AT&T-Mobile merger was oh-so-briefly posted on the FCC’s site by Arnold & Porter LLP, a law firm working on the deal for AT&T. Outlining some of AT&T’s confidential LTE plans, it was quickly taken down. Well, here it is. More »

Is TabCo releasing the JooJoo 2?

All right, TabCo. We admit it. You’ve grabbed our attention with all of this swirling tablet mystery over the past few months. And yes, we’ll be watching today at noon when you make the big reveal. But you couldn’t wait for then, could you? The company offered up a German language tweet earlier today that seemed to shed some light on the mystery of who exactly is behind the soon to be announced tablet, teasing, “Introducing the Grid 10.” Sound familiar? That’s the name affixed to the Fusion Garage tablet we recently saw pass through the FCC — you know, the JooJoo 2? Of course, the company has distanced itself from that product name for obvious reasons. It remains to be seen, of course, whether TabCo has abandoned all mention of the Fusion Garage name as well, like so many CrunchPad prototypes.

Update: Something fishy seems to be happening over on the official TabCo Twitter account. The first tweet has disappeared, as has a second addressing the Google / Motorola news. We’ll update you as more info comes through.

[Thanks, Adriano]

Telecommunications Industry Association gives AT&T / T-Mobile merger a big thumbs up

The Telecommunications Industry Association claims amongst its ranks some of the biggest names in the tech space, including the likes of Apple, Intel, Microsoft and Nokia — so when the organization talks, people tend to listen. This time out, the TIA is giving the nod to AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile, urging that the FCC seriously consider the positive impact it would “have on investment and innovation, expanding consumer access to mobile broadband and addressing the looming spectrum crisis in America.”

TiVo Premiere Elite quad-tuner DVR detailed, doesn’t support OTA broadcasts

Earlier this summer, we got wind of TiVo’s plans to release its Premiere Elite DVR — a retail version of the company’s quad-tuner Premiere Q, which is only available directly through service providers. We knew to expect four tuners on the Elite as well, letting you record content from up to four channels at once. A leaked FCC document sheds a bit more light on the Elite, revealing two terabytes of recording capacity (for a whopping 300 hours of HD), digital cable compatibility (read: no OTA), and support for Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA), for networking with other MoCA-enabled devices in your home. Still missing, however, are a price tag and release date, though Zatz Not Funny predicts pricing to land in the $600-800 range, with a release this fall. $499 seems to be more on target, though, considering the Premiere XL’s $299 price tag — but even at $500, you better really love television if you’re gunning to spend that much on a DVR.

HTC Bliss stops by the FCC dressed in Verizon red (update)

Looking for a little FCC Friday rapture? HTC’s rumored “women only” smartphone, the Bliss, just passed through the Commission’s gates for a bit of strut and tell. Sporting the model number PI46110, the handset seems destined for a Big Red debut with CDMA 850MHz / 1900MHz bands, WiFi and Bluetooth on-board. The carrier looks to be continuing its recent trend of global-capable phones, as the device also packs a GSM 900MHz radio. While we weren’t able to dig out any concrete dimensions for the phone, we’d err on the side of a 4-inch or below display, considering VZW’s past dalliances with gender-specific marketing — no, we haven’t forgotten those Pre Plus ads. If that leaked roadmap is any indication, you ladies can expect to see this stylish (we assume) Android 2.3 accessory hit on September 29th.

Update: A Verizon mailer has popped up over at xda-developers, and while the camera placement certainly seems to conflict, some folks are suggesting that what’s shown there (and after the break) might just be the first legitimate shot of the Bliss. Here’s hoping, right? Thanks, Liam!

Archos Arnova 7b G2 makes its way through the FCC, we play the name game

We just saw Archos’ Arnova 7 G2 make its debut in Hong Kong, and now a tablet carrying a strikingly similar appellative is popping up at the FCC. It might carry a familiar moniker, but the Arnova 7b G2 doesn’t share the same skin as its recently outed cousin. Unlike the textured body we saw in Hong Kong, this guy’s backside is a total fingerprint magnet, just like its predecessor, which we caught (official) wind of just two months ago. So what’s up with this G2 confusion, anyway? Unfortunately, we’ll just have to wait and see, as that’s all she wrote for this dig through the FCC.

FCC details plans to bring texting, photos and video to 911 service

The FCC started talking about its intention to allow for 911 texting (and even photos and videos) last year, and now Chairman Julius Genachowski is out with a detailed plan for a “next generation” 911 service. The standout feature of it is just that — the ability to send a text, photo or video in the event of an emergency — but that also brings with it a complete overhaul of the backend of the service, and a switch to an IP-based architecture from the current circuit-switched system. That, the FCC says, should provide more flexibility and resiliency, and the agency has a number of other improvements in mind as well, including increased accessibility for people with disabilities, and new measures to improve the accuracy of location gathering (including new rules for wireless carriers). Of course, it all still is just a plan at the moment, but the FCC says it will consider a move to accelerate adoption of the plan next month.

Samsung i927 clears the FCC hurdle, AT&T-bound at last?

Yeah, the Samsung i927 definitely exists — and the FCC’s flaunting the docs to prove it. That doesn’t mean we’re allowed to know all its deep, dark secrets yet; sadly, the Galaxy S II-esque device doesn’t bare it all for us to see. Granted, we’ve already seen pics of the QWERTY landscape slider, and it seems like that it’ll make its way onto AT&T’s smartphone lineup, so we already know more about the device than most FCC filings could ever reveal. But is it the mystical Samsung Attain we’ve postulated about for months? It utilizes the usual 850 / 1900 bands for WCDMA and HSPA (though it leaves no mention of any global frequencies that may lie in the phone), and the dimensions show a striking resemblance to those on the unlocked GSII — it’s roughly one mm off in both directions — so we can’t let go of the possibility yet. Whatever it is, this thing can’t come soon enough.

HP TouchPad 4G hits FCC on the way to AT&T

There’s a lot to be said for timing. Earlier today, HP quietly rolled a permanent price drop on the first generation TouchPad, and now it seems that the 4G version of the webOS slate has paid a visit to the folks at the FCC. The filing has “TouchPad” written all over it — literally — plus a few labels sporting “HSPA+ AT&T.”

FCC halts AT&T’s acquisition of Qualcomm spectrum, bundles it with T-Mobile merger review

AT&T’s LTE spectrum acquisitions just hit a minor bump in the federal road. In a recently released FCC statement, Wireless Bureau chief Rick Kaplan announced the decision to stop the 180 day review clock on the telco’s proposed takeover of Qualcomm’s 700MHz spectrum. The $1.9 billion deal, inked last December, isn’t getting the regulatory axe, but due to a “number of related issues” concerning spectrum overlap with the still unapproved T-Mobile merger, the commission is bundling the two into one future review. Maybe it’s time the carrier’s industry backers pen another letter of support to Chairman Genachowski.

Update: Qualcomm’s VP of Government Affairs Dean Brenner reached out to us with an official statement you can read after the break.
