Along with the iPad 2, Apple’s releasing the final version of iOS 4.3, which features the Nitro Javscript engine from Safari on OS X, new iTunes Home Sharing features that let you play content from desktop iTunes over WiFi, and the updated suite of AirPlay features from the betas — including the ability for App Store apps to share audio and video. Apple’s also finalizing the new option that lets you assign the side switch to either rotation lock or mute, and it’s adding Personal Hotspot support. There’s also those rumored iOS versions of Photo Booth and FaceTime for the new cameras. It’ll be a free download for all iPads, the GSM iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch when it’s released on March 11. When will it hit the Verizon iPhone 4? We don’t know yet.

T-Mobile continues campaign against iPhone 4 with new ‘State of the Smartphone’ infographic

T-Mobile cares about you. It cares so much that it’s spending all its advertising dollars lately making sure you know full well that the iPhone 4 can’t do “4G” the way its own phones can. The latest salvo in this crusade of enlightenment includes the above graphs showing just how much faster and further your money can go if you ride along on the Magenta network. It conveniently ignores the fact that AT&T and Verizon offer other phones besides Apple’s iPhone, some of which can handle speeds above the 3G threshold, but such is the price you pay when you want to have a really pretty and eye-catching chart. Hit the source link to soak up more of T-Mobile’s priceless wisdom.

[Thanks, Ramon]

iBike Dash turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a cycling computer

There’s not exactly any shortage of ways to mount your iPhone or iPod touch to your bike, but there’s decidedly fewer options that actually turn your iOS device into a full-fledged cycling computer that’s able to replace those from the likes of Garmin. This new iBike Dash device promises to do just that, though. It not only houses your device is a protective, waterproof shell, but it includes an ANT+ speed sensor and is compatible with other ANT+ devices so you can measure heart rate and cadence. It also has room for an extra rechargeable battery to extend your run time, and it naturally makes use of a free app that takes advantage of your iPhone’s GPS capabilities (no built-in GPS here to help out iPod touch users). Of course, all that means this one also costs considerably more than a simple bike mount — look for the basic model to set you back $199, while the deluxe package (including cadence and HR monitors along with an extra battery and charger) runs $329.

Verizon iPhone Sales Lacking – Report

Thumbnail image for iphone 4 flat.jpg

After years of waiting and countless studies outlining just how doomed AT&T would be if the news of a Verizon iPhone ever arrived, it turns out that maybe people weren’t all that excited, after all. According to some apparently leaked numbers, customers are buying Verizon iPhones by the boatload, as so many expected.

Boy Genius Report offered up some less than impressive numbers from the Verizon iPhone’s first five days of availability. The numbers, which were culled from five “very prominent” Apple stores, showed that the Verizon version outsold its AT&T counterpart, but not really by all that much. The biggest disparity came, naturally, on the first day, when 909 Verizon iPhones were sold to AT&T’s 539. The gap shrinks pretty quickly from there.
On day two, it’s Verizon 916, AT&T 680. Day three is 660 to 471, day four is 796 to 701, and day five is 711 to 618. Pre-orders, meanwhile, were apparently around 550,000. Those aren’t quite standing in line at the Apple Store for five days numbers.
Could it be that people are already fixated on the iPhone 5?

AT&T’s old $49 iPhone 3GS gets a new ad to sell it (video)

It looks like someone’s realized that simultaneous voice and web will not be enough to keep kids away from the Verizon iPhone. But where technical details fail to entice, perhaps a good deal will. Because, really, what’s better (or at least as good) as retaining your current customers? Well, if you ask AT&T it’s bringing in a slew of new ones by advertising that bargain-basement $49 iPhone 3GS (8GB). Feel free to check out the latest commercial after the break — as is usually the case, this one is a non-stop thrill ride.

iPhone Nano Coming in Summer – Rumor

Thumbnail image for iPodnano201.jpg

While most of the mobile world is busy covering the news out of Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona, The Wall Street Journal is speaking to the usual gang of anonymous sources about the latest fuzzy rumor of an Apple product. This time out, it’s news that the company is readying the launch of a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone 4–we’re calling it the iPhone nano. Apple probably won’t, but it’s just easier that way, right?
According to the sources, the phone has actually been codenamed the N97. It will be roughly half the size of the iPhone 4 and fairly cheaper–the handset may even be free with carrier subsidies, if the leak is to be believed.
Also on the calendar for Summer–a “major revamp” to MobileMe, apparently.

Hitachi Announces iPhone-Beating Smartphone Screen

Apple’s 3.5-inch Retina Display is certainly sharp, but large-screen smartphones like the Droid X are missing out on all the 326 ppi goodness. Not if Hitachi has anything to say about it. The same display technology that powers the iPhone 4 is about to get super-sized.
The company has produced a 4.5 inch, 1280×720 (720p) display aimed directly at the smartphone market. Citing the number of people watching “high-definition video” and reading “photo-quality books” on phones as reasons for the increase in pixels, they plan to put them into production around October and show them off at the Society for Information Display in Los Angeles this summer.
At 329 pixels per inch, these displays slightly outpace the density of the iPhone’s screen while adding an inch to the size. Like Apple, Hitachi claims their new screen is “close to the limit of the human eye.” Not only is the resolution excellent, but the display will use IPS technology, which promises great color reproduction and viewing angles compared to other LCDs. If Hitachi sticks with their planned release date, you can expect smartphones this holiday season will come with quite a lot of pixels.
