Pleco Chinese Dictionary iPhone app now handling real-time image translations

Talk about timely. We’ve been waiting for months (with bated breath, might we add) for Pleco 2.2 to finally hit Apple’s App Store, and after dealing with a few launch day bugs last week, we can finally say it’s out and ready to dominate any Chinese homework you’ve been hastily procrastinating on. The Pleco Chinese Dictionary is now available in the app store at version 2.2.1, supporting both fullscreen handwriting input and live camera-based character recognition. Have a peek at the video past the break if you’re still curious as to what this app can do for you, and feel free to toss your experiences with it down in comments below. Here’s hoping this is only the first of many languages Pleco decides to tackle — not that we’re much on tossing out subtle hints.

The BoxWave Keyboard Buddy Gives Your iPhone Keys

BoxWave Keyboard Buddy

There’s no shortage of iPhone cases designed to add a touch of elegance to your iPhone, some protection, and maybe an added feature here and there, but the BoxWave Keyboard Buddy wants to add one of the best features of all to your iPhone: a full QWERTY keyboard. The Keyboard Buddy is a tiny Bluetooth Keyboard that clips onto your iPhone 4, pairs with it over Bluetooth, and slides out horizontally from the bottom whenever you need it, much like the slide-out keyboard of the Motorola Droid.
BoxWave isn’t the only company to do this: ThinkGeek did it first with the TK-421 flip-out keyboard back in September. The BoxWave keyboard is a little slimmer and attaches to the bottom, but doesn’t protect all sides like the TK-421 does, and the BoxWave Keyboard Buddy only works with the iPhone 4, while the ThinkGeek TK-421 has models for the iPhone 4 and the 3GS.
The other issue is that the Keyboard Buddy will set you back $69.95 at retail, and will only be available on December 14th, which is a little close for the holiday season. Compare that with the fact that the TK-421 is available now and retails a full $20 less, BoxWave makes it hard to choose their iPhone keyboard over the TK-421, but it’s always good to have more than one option to choose from. If you prefer the look of the Keyboard Buddy, it’s worth checking out.

iOS 4.2 review (for iPad)

If you’re an iPad owner, you’ve probably been on pins and needles lately. That’s because back in September, Apple announced that a full-scale update to the tablet’s OS would be coming in the form of iOS 4.2, bringing a slew of new features to the device. Included in that laundry list is proper iOS 4-style multitasking, folders, major mail improvements, Game Center integration, and Safari enhancements (like find-in-page text searches). Besides those features, the company has been touting two other big changes that could cause a major shift in the way you use your iPad — namely, AirPrint and AirPlay. Both additions leverage your WiFi network, certain connected printers, and the new Apple TV in an attempt to make the company’s slate less like a distraction and more like the center of your digital life.

When the update was originally announced, we took you on a walkthrough of the early developer beta. Though 4.2 will roll out to the iPhone and iPod touch, we wanted to focus on the iPad version, as it represents a major change for the platform. We’ve had a chance to spend time with the final version of the OS (which is actually 4.2.1 now), and put it through its paces. We’ve updated our original guide and given the finished product a critical once over, so read on for our full review!

The XShot iPhone 4 Case Gives Your Phone a Camera Mount

XShot iPhone 4 Case

Most cameras, digital or otherwise, have a standard screw-adapter on the bottom that you can use to mount the device to a tripod or extendable arm that makes taking photos a snap. Even a number of cell phones have the same adapter somewhere on the body. Not the iPhone 4, unfortunately – Apple would never approve of something like that on the iPhone’s chassis.
Thankfully, the XShot Case for the iPhone 4 pulls double duty and protects your iPhone when you want to use it as a phone, but also has an attachment for the bottom-left and the bottom of the phone so you can easily screw your iPhone 4 onto a tripod or monopod for a little stability when taking photos or video with your phone.
The adapter can be used in portrait or landscape mode, and if you prefer your phone without a case, you can easily slip it on or off when you want to use it.
The XShot Case even comes with a small flexible tripod to get you started, or you can use the case with other popular stands like the Joby Gorillapod, for example. The XShot iPhone 4 Case will retail for $24.95, and should be available by the end of November, just in time for the holiday season. You can pre-order one now from their Web site.

White iPhone Knockoffs Could Land Teen in Hot Water

white-iphone-4.jpg

A New York-based teenager may have incurred the wrath of Apple’s lawyers after he took white iPhone delays into his own hands. Seventeen-year-old Fei “Phil” Lam has been selling eager customers converter kits to turn black iPhones into white iPhones.

The kits, which he’s selling for around $279 a piece contain parts supplied by Foxcon–the China-based company that manufactures parts for Apple. Lam speaks fluent Chinese and got in touch with FoxCon through an acquaintance. He sells the kits through his site whiteiphonefournow.com.

Lam claims to have made around $130,000 selling them to antsy Apple fans who apparently can’t sit through anymore delays (the white iPhone, now scheduled to arrive in March, was originally slotted to appear at the same time as the black iPhone 4).

Lam plans to use that money to help pay for school. “I’m very thankful, ’cause for months I was struggling for an idea that would bootstrap my first startup and help pay for college,” he told The New York Observer.

Unfortunately, all of that money may end up going to Lam’s legal expenses. The Queens-based teenage entrepreneur claims to have been contacted by a private investigator attempting to put the kibosh on his burgeoning company. Lam believes that the P.I. may have been hired by Apple.

“There are a couple of other sellers online and somehow I’m the ‘focus’ of it all,” Lam said. “I think this guy is just trying to scare me into stop selling on behalf of Apple.”

iFrogz Updates Lines for the Holidays

iFrogzNew.jpg

Yesterday we shared news of Case-mate releasing updated iPhone 4 and iPad cases for the holidays. It’s not the only one in the holiday spirit. Case-maker iFrogz has also updated its looks for the season and you can find them all at Best Buy stores exclusively. Shown here is the Luxe Lean Frost Phase line, an iPhone 4 case. You can also try the Luxe Edge, a thin bumper-style two-part case that comes in a two-pack of blue/black and iron/black.

For an ’80s preppy look, check our the Fusion case, available in plaid and argyle. I’m also crazy about the model called the Spy, which has a funky op-art pattern and a cut-out that lets the phone’s Apple logo show through. The new cases are in the $25 to $35 neighborhood. BoxWave’s Keyboard Buddy turns your iPhone 4 into the Droid it always wanted to be

Suffering from a little bit of Droid envy? It happens to even the most loyal of iPhone users, and now BoxWave is stepping in to make your life almost complete (we say “almost” because there’s still no native Gmail client for the iPhone, and all your tears aren’t going to solve that). The BoxWave Keyboard Buddy Case is just what it sounds like, a Bluetooth keyboard embedded in an iPhone 4 case, only instead of flipping out like the TK-421 or slide-tilting like the ultra-bulky Nuu Mini Key, BoxWave’s solution is a simple sliding affair that adds very little to the iPhone 4’s profile and hardly anything to its footprint. Also, it’s your buddy. It’ll start shipping next month, and it’s a little spendy at $70, but can you really put a price on the flattery of imitation?

Case-mate’s Fall/Winter Collection Is Here

winter2010.jpg

Perhaps no iPhone 4 and iPad case-maker turns out more fresh styles than Case-mate, and now we know the reason why: it organizes its line into seasonal collections. The site has just announced its fall/winter collection, and the looks are luxe. It’s broken the new styles into men’s and women’s lines, which is an eyebrow-raiser. The men’s line favors browns and blacks, with items for the executive or junior executive. The women’s line is the flashy one, with electric purples and pinks, a seasonal lime green, and some fun prints.

The cases range from $34.99 to $49.99 for iPhone 4 cases to $89.99 for iPad stand cases. You can find the collection at Nordstrom. I predict that Nina would find the line very of-the-moment, Michael would find the pairings too matchy-matchy, and Heidi would want to put the Green Reptile Barely There case on her own iPhone.
