Hasta La Gadget!

Unsurprisingly, El Goog gifted the Android versions of Latitude and Places with these updates a few weeks back, but now the iOS loyalists are being brought into a similar circle. The search giant has just added check-ins to the iOS version of Google Latitude, with any iDevice using iOS 4 or higher being deemed compatible. In related news, the Applefied build of Google Places is now available in 30 languages, and there’s an added ‘Saved Places’ feature for keeping tabs on your favorite spots. You can check your phone for updates, or if you haven’t dug in yet, have a poke around in the App Store.

If 32GB just isn’t enough to carry your entire collection of Police bootlegs and Greatest Hits compilations, prepare to look enviously upon this bastion of storage salvation. It’s a 64GB iPhone 4, a supposed prototype leaked by a Foxconn employee. M.I.C. Gadget scored a quick video of the phone, even prying off the back cover revealing internals that certainly look official. The back is curiously designated “XXGB,” which thankfully does not indicate a turn to Roman Numerals, while the model number and FCC ID are similarly X’d out. Other details, like a missing silver ring around the camera lens, indeed make this look like a prototype, but of course the question now is whether this plucky little handset will ever follow its dreams of becoming a production model before getting relegated to obsolescence.

Update: We went over to the Sin Tak shopping mall in Hong Kong to get up close and personal with this mysterious device. Shockingly, the folks wanted a hefty HK$13,500 (US$1,734) for their phone, but this alone doesn’t really prove whether it’s a legit Foxconn prototype. We also got some folks to run the numbers through Apple’s system, and while the serial number is invalid, the model number indicates that this device was manufactured in early 2010, which probably means at one point Apple intended to release a 64GB version of the iPhone 4, but then changed its mind. Ah well, let’s see what this summer will bring us.

Say it ain’t so! According to this here slide, which details a bit of insidery AT&T information about the impending release of iOS 4.3, Ma Bell’s iPhone 4 will have its Personal Hotspot restricted to use with just three devices. Just about every MiFi / mobile hotspot device we’ve ever seen — including Verizon’s iPhone 4 — has supported five WiFi devices, but unless AT&T pulls a 180 here, it’ll be limiting its iPhone to just three connections. What’s wild is that we’ve found AT&T to actually have superior 3G speeds when you can actually get a signal (and thus, be more conducive to tethering five devices at once), and since you’d be on a data cap anyway, it’s not like AT&T risks losing millions from five P2P servers being ran over one’s iPhone. Granted, it’s possible that some unicorn crafted this piece of paperwork to throw us all off, but we’ve reached out to AT&T and are awaiting comment. You know, just in case.

Update: Based on Apple’s iOS 4.3 page, only three WiFi devices are supported through the Personal Hotspot connection. If you’d like to tether five total devices, the other two will need to be over Bluetooth / USB. Don’t go blaming AT&T here — we’re guessing Verizon’s model will be set up the same way. Though it was kind of implied during the iPad 2 event yesterday when we learned that the GSM (that is, non-Verizon) version of the iPhone 4 would be getting iOS 4.3 with mobile hotspot capability on March 11th, we’ve doubly confirmed with AT&T today that the carrier will be offering the feature right out of the gate — a departure from the tethering delay of days gone by. Naturally, you’ll need the tethering feature added to your account, a $20 surcharge over the standard 2GB DataPro plan for a grand total of $45 with a 4GB bucket. Makes the extra coin a little easier to swallow over cabled and Bluetooth tethering alone, we suppose.

Along with the iPad 2, Apple’s releasing the final version of iOS 4.3, which features the Nitro Javscript engine from Safari on OS X, new iTunes Home Sharing features that let you play content from desktop iTunes over WiFi, and the updated suite of AirPlay features from the betas — including the ability for App Store apps to share audio and video. Apple’s also finalizing the new option that lets you assign the side switch to either rotation lock or mute, and it’s adding Personal Hotspot support. There’s also those rumored iOS versions of Photo Booth and FaceTime for the new cameras. It’ll be a free download for all iPads, the GSM iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch when it’s released on March 11. When will it hit the Verizon iPhone 4? We don’t know yet.
