Mophie Juice Pack family portrait: Powerstation, Reserve, Boost, and Air for iPhone 4

Mophie’s had quite a few product announcements recently, from an iPhone 4 case / battery pack to a credit card solution with intuit. Hot on the heels of this week’s Juice Pack Powerstation unveil, the company stopped by to give us a glimpse of their revised lineup. In addition to all the aforementioned, we also got to check out the Reserve and Boost that formally debuted back in June. We didn’t get enough time to really put ’em through their battery charging paces, but we did get pictures — hey, you’re welcome.

iOS 4.2 beta hits Apple’s developer portal, wireless printing dubbed ‘AirPrint’

Digg If you’re an iOS developer (or good friends with one), today is going to be totally awesome. Apple has just let loose the official iOS 4.2 beta builds for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch — meaning that someone somewhere is going to be experiencing multitasking on the ‘pad (sans jailbreaking, of course). Additionally, Apple has decided to bestow a name upon its new printing experience (the direct-to-printer tech the company showed off at its fall event). And that name? AirPrint. In a piece of PR just issued by Apple (available to read after the break), it’s noted that owners of HP products with ePrint tech will be the first to take advantage of the new tool — so that’s something.

Of course, all that news should be lost in a cloud of excitement over 4.2. As usual, we’re going to take the OS for a spin on our developer iPad here and see what’s what, and then report back to you cats and kittens about whatever nuggets of joy we find. Stay tuned!

HTC Desire family portrait (video)

So you own a Desire and want to know whether its new brandmates — the Desire HD and Desire Z — will represent an ergonomically appealing upgrade? We’ve got you covered with both a gallery of shots below and a neat video after the break encapsulating the size differences between the three models populating Desireland. Okay, we couldn’t resist, we threw in an iPhone 4 for comparison’s sake as well.

Did iOS 4.1 introduce in-car USB playback problems for you?

As with almost any software update, Apple has seemingly introduced a few new issues while ironing out a couple of others. Automotive forums around the web are ablaze with talk that iOS 4.1 has introduced any number of playback problems, with the bulk of complainers citing scratching, crackling or random disconnects when piping audio from their device to their vehicle via the dock connector. We’ve tested two iOS 4.1-equipped iPhone 4 handsets in two separate vehicles here at Engadget HQ, and we saw no quirks whatsoever, but we’ve no doubt that the issue is real to some extent. Prior firmwares have caused permanent incompatibilities between our iPods and vehicles before, and we’re about at our wit’s end. We know it’s impossible for the software engineers at Cupertino to test new builds on every car adapter out there, but we’re starting to wonder if they bother to plug ’em into any vehicles at all. Tell us below if you’ve pulled any hairs out in recent days, won’t you?

Nokia CBD vs. Apple Retina display fight, part deux: sunlight edition (video)

You asked for it, so here it is: the iPhone 4’s retina display versus a prototype Nokia E7 with new AMOLED Clear Black Display in direct sunlight. With both displays set to 100 percent brightness, we’d say that the EPD had a very very slight edge as it offered the best visibility under the most extreme viewing angles. Having said that, both are equally uncomfortable to use in intense sunlight, even as that’s defined on a cloudless morning in London. Feast on the gallery below and video after the break to see the two under a variety of viewing angles.

Nokia CBD vs. Apple Retina… display fight!

Come on, you knew this post was coming. Here we have a prototype Nokia E7 and its new 4-inch, 640×360 pixel Clear Black Display pitted again the iPhone 4’s 3.5-inch 960×640 pixel Retina display. To our eyes, the iPhone 4 display has a noticeable blue warmth and wasn’t as vibrant or bright as the CBD. The CBD, however, did come across a bit oversatured (just look at those red “breaking news” bars), but hey, it’s AMOLED. It certainly looks just as good as the Galaxy S’ Super AMOLED. We’ll have to see how the polarized layer on the CBD affects sunlight viewing. More on that later. Until then, play nice dear readers.

iPhone 4 free case program to end September 30th, get one while you still can

Back when Apple initially said it’d offer free iPhone 4 cases to assuage reception concerns, there was a September 30th deadline given for the program. After which, according to Steve and company during the post-press conference Q&A, Apple would “evaluate” the prolonged need for such an offer. Well, looks like the decision has been made. In a statement on its website, Apple has confirmed the free case program will be discontinued for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30th, and the return policy for the smartphone will return to normal, pre-antennagate rules. Evidently, said the statement, “we now know the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought.” It had to end sometime, folks.

Apple’s Ending the Free iPhone 4 Case Program September 30 [Apple]

As expected, Apple has reevaluated their iPhone case initiative: “We are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010.” But they’ll still give you one if you complain. More »

FaceTime headed for Mac OS X and Windows next?

Digg
It seems more than a little odd to us that Apple hasn’t bothered to make FaceTime compatible with its own longstanding desktop video chat service, iChat, but we’ve at least supposed that it’s an inevitability with whatever upcoming Mac OS X update or software bundle that Apple deems appropriate. Now Mac4Ever, who was spot on with a pile of rumors last year, but hasn’t succeeded with its recent prediction of an iLife ’11 launch in August, is saying that Apple is prepping FaceTime both for Mac and PC. We don’t know if that means building a whole copy of iChat for Windows, or just making FaceTime compatible with some existing PC video chat service, but it would certainly improve the odds of us ever finding a legitimate use for FaceTime.
