Shopify’s integrated retail platform merges online and in-store sales (video)

Mobile payment options like Square have been a boon to small business owners, and now Shopify is looking to expand the potential of point of sale systems with its new platform. The company is branching out from its online retail roots by offering a way to merge in-store and internet sales with a combined inventory system. Shop owners can choose which items they want to sell online or in their brick and mortar stores, while the POS app synchronizes the process. Additionally, Shopify comes with an iPad-compatible credit card reader, email receipts and detailed analytics. If you’re in the market for an integrated retail system, the expanded hardware kit might be worth checking out; it includes a cash drawer, iPad stand and receipt printer. Cart Life: The Lemonade Stand Sim for the 21st Century

I love indie games. There’s just a sort of a creative freedom, ingenuity and singular artistic vision in many of these games that makes them often more fun than the big blockbusters. One unusual little indie game that recently popped onto my radar screen was Cart Life. It’s actually been around for a couple of years, but it’s new to me.

cart life

The game dusts off the old lemonade stand type sim of the 1980s and breathes fresh life into it. Cart Life was developed by Richard Hofmeier, and offers a retro style befitting its gameplay.

The game puts you in charge of the livelihood of one of several citizens of a fictitious city, and asks you to build and operate their various street vending businesses. But these characters not only have business goals to meet, they each have needs and addictions which must be fed, as well as unique personality traits. It’s as much about money management and business skills as managing risk and reward for your sims.

Cart Life is available as a free download for Windows PCs here. Richard also offers a deluxe edition with a bonus game, soundtrack MP3s and a bonus playable character for just $5(USD). There’s also a fan-made Mac port available here.

PayPal trials mugshot verification in UK stores

PayPal trials mug shot authentication in UK stores

PayPal employees at the company’s UK headquarters are tired of having to use traditional payment methods when buying their rocket and crayfish sarnies. It’s almost an affront, in fact, so they’re pushing local retailers in Richmond Upon Thames to trial an updated, entirely PayPal-based system that uses photo authentication to make things faster. If you want to try it, go to the “Local” section of your PayPal app (on iOS, Android or WP), which should show nearby participating shops, and simply select the one you’re visiting — this will then cause your name and profile picture to come up on the seller’s app so they can verify you’re the account holder and process the transaction. Having given it a quick armchair run-through, the system looks similar to what PayPal already offers in some Australian stores, and it’s apparently PIN-free at the point of purchase — although you’ll obviously have had to authenticate your app when you installed it, as well as have uploaded a reasonably realistic (and preferably static) profile picture.

Currys and PC World now offer same-day delivery to impulsive UK tech shoppers

Currys and PC World offer sameday delivery to impulsive UK tech shoppers

Brits who can’t stand waiting for gadget purchases can swing by a Currys or PC World to pick them up immediately, but that also requires the hassle of visiting a big-box store. As of today, impulse buyers won’t have to brave that gauntlet: both Currys and PC World are offering same-day delivery for online orders. UK residents buying small gadgets from either shop before 9:30AM can spend £15 ($23) to have the goods reach their door by 10PM that night. The stores are also offering Sunday afternoon deliveries at similar pricing, and the £5 ($8) next-day option now includes all orders made before midnight. Extra-speedy shipments are initially limited to those in greater London and a handful of other post codes, but the retailers promise wider availability in the near future.

Samsung Galaxy NX arrives in UK for a hefty figure

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard about the recently-announced Samsung Galaxy NX Android-powered camera, but it is indeed still here and ready to mingle. According to a couple of UK retailers, the camera has made its way to the region and is ready to start selling with a price tag that rivals the Canon 70D that’s coming later this year.

P1100987-L-580x326

Jessops and Wex Photographic both have the new camera listed on their website. Wex Photographic has the camera in pre-order status, while Jessops actually says that they have it in stock and ready to ship. However, don’t go grab your credit card thinking this is an impulse buy. You’ll be spending a lot of cash on this camera, to the tune of £1,299 (around $2,000).

The Galaxy NX is the first-ever Android-powered interchangeable lens camera, and it comes with a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor and an 18-55mm kit lens to get you started, but you’ll be able to snap on other lenses to get that perfect shot you need. The camera also comes with 4G LTE, WiFi, and 16GB of internal storage.

On the inside, there’s a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM powering the operation, with a capability of shooting 8.6 frames per second, with a fast shutter speed of 1/6000. It certainly seems like a decent camera for all the hobbyists out there, but it’ll be interesting to see how it caters towards the professional crowd.

There’s no official word on a release date yet, and it could just be a simple mistake on Jessops’ part about the availability of the camera. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that a retailer has made a false start and listed something early. Now we’re just waiting to see when we’ll see the camera arrive in the States.

New Nexus 7 officially arrives as Google pulls the trigger early

Google’s new Nexus 7 was released a bit prematurely today, as retailers like Best Buy and Amazon put the new tablet on sale. First it was Best Buy, and then more and more retailers piled on, offering the new Nexus 7 days before Google would put it up for sale. However, it seems Google is pulling the plug on their originally plans of a July 30 launch, and are selling the tablet right now.

The second-generation Nexus 7 was announced on Wednesday, and listings began going up as early as this morning, with ship dates that would land you the new tablet well before Google’s planned launch date of July 30. Because of that, it looks like Google said “screw it” and is making the tablet available early.

We’re not sure what exactly happened with the retail availability, but it seems as if they were supposed to wait until July 30 just like Google, but with Best Buy being the first retailer to jump the gun, other retailers felt it necessary to get their listings up as well. Keep in mind that Best Buy also launched their Nexus 7 pre-orders prematurely.

Google has both the 16GB and 32GB models available for purchase on Google Play, and they’re even offering free ground shipping, with $13.99 shipping that will get the tablet to your front door by July 30. Or you could just pay $4 next-day shipping on Amazon (if you have Prime) to get the tablet tomorrow. Better yet, just drive on down to your local Best Buy and pick one up.

As for those in the UK, pre-orders are live right now, but the tablet will sadly not land across the pond until September 13. Other regions of the world are unknown, but we’re guessing the US is the only country getting the tablet early.

New Nexus 7 arrives at Best Buy a few days early [UPDATE: Amazon too]

Google’s refreshed Nexus 7 isn’t supposed to officially land in stores until next week on July 30, but it seems Best Buy is jumping the gun yet again and now has both the 16GB and 32GB versions of the second-generation Nexus 7 available for purchase. Let’s just hope the listing don’t get taken down like they were with the pre-orders.

hrrwtmk-580x359

The new Nexus 7 was put on pre-order a few hours before the official unveiling of the new tablet, letting early adopters get an even earlier start on ordering their own unit. However, they were quickly taken down and replaced with a “coming soon” banner. Now, just two days after the announcement and a whole weekend before the launch, Best Buy has them up for sale.

Furthermore, calling some local Best Buy stores in the area confirmed that the new tablet is in stock and on shelves, ready to buy. Your mileage may vary depending on where you live, but if you’re wanting the new Nexus 7 today, we’d suggest heading down to your nearest Best Buy to see if you can grab one.

UPDATE: Amazon is now selling the new Nexus 7 as well, and if you’re a Prime member, you can get it in the mail tomorrow for only $4 more.

The new Nexus 7 comes with a 1920×1200 7-inch display and runs the new Android 4.3, which comes with several new features, including multi-user accounts with support for restricted profiles. The tablet is slightly thinner all around and it even crams in a 5-megapixel camera on the back.

Users will also be treated with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM. The tablet comes with the same graphics chip as before, but benchmarks have proved that performance is increased, thanks to improved OpenGL support. You can check out our own benchmarks to see how the tablet stacks up.

Xbox One pre-orders sold out at Best Buy

Just yesterday, GameStop confirmed that they stopped accepting pre-orders for the new PlayStation 4 after they received incredible demand for the console. This time around, the Xbox One is seeing its first pre-order halt at Best Buy. The Xbox One Day One Edition, which is the only console on Best Buy’s website, is listed as “Sold Out Online.”

xbox_one_full_package-580x3981

As for in-store pre-orders, a couple of Best Buy locations in the area told us that they were no longer accepting pre-orders in-store either, but they said it’s possible that they’ll open up again if they get more inventory in at some point, although that’s a big “if” at this point.

Gamers still wanting to pre-order an Xbox One can still do so at Amazon, Walmart, Target, or GameStop, although the Day One Edition on Amazon doesn’t appear to be available for pre-order — just the standard edition console, which is a bit odd. Nonetheless, there are still plenty of places to grab an Xbox One for yourself, but we’d recommend to hurry it up since Best Buy is already sold out. More stores are likely to follow soon.

As for Best Buy’s availability of the PlayStation 4, they still have everything up for pre-order, hinting to the possibility that the Xbox One is selling much better than the PS4 at Best Buy, but it’s the other way around at GameStop. Then again, it could entirely be an issue of inventory rather than who had the most pre-orders.

Frankly, we’re pretty excited for both of the consoles’ releases later in the fall, and a fresh new console war has long been overdue. The holiday season will arguably be the biggest that we’ve seen in the last few years thanks to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and we have no doubt in believing that these will be big ticket items when Santa comes to town.
