Kin firmware torn apart, reveals provisioning for AT&T, T-Mobile, Fido?

In public, Microsoft has been adamant about its relationship with Verizon in bringing the Kin to market, even saying that the research and development process involved regular trips to Big Red’s New Jersey offices — but how strong is that bond behind the scenes? Well-established WinMo hacker Conflipper seems to have stumbled across a Kin ROM in recent days, tearing it apart in search of interesting tidbits, and here’s a doozy: the firmware appears to be ready for provisioning on a variety of North American, European, and Asian carriers, including T-Mobile and AT&T in the US, Fido (a Rogers subsidiary) in Canada, O2, 3, TeliaSonera, China Mobile, China Unicom, Bharti Airtel for India, and both NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank in Japan. Amusingly, launch partner Vodafone is misspelled as “Vodaphone” in the files, but seriously, we’re wondering how close any of these deals are to actually going down. Fido would make a lot of sense since Microsoft has yet to announce a Canadian partner, but we’ve previously heard that Microsoft has no intention of taking the phone to Asia — so this could be a completely meaningless list after all.

Steve Jobs to Speak at All Things Digital Conference

Steve Jobs will appear as a guest speaker at the All Things Digital conference hosted by The Wall Street Journal in Los Angeles.

The Apple CEO is scheduled for an onstage interview on June 1, the opening night of the tech conference.

There is much to talk to Jobs about, obviously, including the new iPad, the mobile market and the iPhone, its tense relationship with Google (GOOG) and the next innovations from the Silicon Valley computer icon,” wrote All Things Digital columnist Kara Swisher.

Jobs has appeared a number of times at previous All Things Digital events. In 2007, Jobs and co-founder Bill Gates spoke in a joint session about their long history in the technology industry.

These onstage interviews tend to be interesting, as Jobs rarely speaks at events other than those carefully planned (and scripted) by his own company. At the 2003 All Things Digital Conference, for example, Jobs told writer Walt Mossberg that Apple wasn’t planning to produce a tablet, among other sneaky statements demonstrating the businessman’s knack for masterful misdirection.

This year’s All Things Digital conference takes place from June 1 to June 3 near Los Angeles. Other guests include director James Cameron, Microfot CEO Steve Ballmer and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Video: Disneys Toy Story 3 U Command Buzz Does the Tango

He’s a spaceman of many talents. Yesterday Disney gave us a peek at one of its new tie-in toys for the much anticipated “Toy Story 3”: U Command Buzz comes with a wireless remote and can perform nearly 1,000 action sequences, including this rather romantic tango. Fittingly, he also speaks Spanish.

At $79.99 list, this new Buzz is priced well below last year’s Ultimate Buzz Lightyear robotic toy, which made it onto our list of the 14 Top Tech Toys of 2009; look for U Command Buzz to ship in May.

Great Wall GBook fills that 11-inch Windows 7 tablet hole in our hearts

In case you hadn’t noticed, there are just a few folks in China heck bent on building every conceivable tablet form factor, and your potential indifference, horror, or focus-on-the-software pleas can’t stop them. Here’s an interesting example: the GBook tablet from Great Wall. The 11-inch number runs a 1.2GHz Intel ULV SU2300 processor with integrated Intel graphics and 2GB of RAM. There will apparently be options for a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD for storage, but most refreshing is the 10-point multitouch panel Great Wall has on top of Windows 7 here. There’s no word on price or when this will be hitting the market, but we’re sure it will be out just in time and priced just appropriately to disappoint us completely and utterly. There’s video after the break.

LaCie Reduces the Wait with USB 3.0 Hard Drive

Rugged_USB3.jpg

Waiting sucks. We don’t have to suffer with 14.4 modems anymore or Web pages that take more than a few seconds to load, but large file transfers can still take time. That will change with the adoption of USB 3.0, which is why LaCie is offering its first USB 3.0 drive, the LaCie Rugged USB 3.0. You’ll be able to move big files faster than ever before, with speeds up to 110MB/second.

And those orange edges aren’t just for good looks: This drive can sustain a 2.2-meter drop and still keep your data safe. You’ll even get a few extras, such as backup software and 10GB of online storage for one year, thanks to Wuala. The Rugged 3.0 offers 500GB of storage and lists for $149.99.

That kind of transfer rate might sound appealing, but it works only if your computer supports USB 3.0. Otherwise, this backwards-compatible drive will work as a slower rate. To upgrade your computer, LaCie offers the USB 3.0 PCIe card and the USB 3.0 PICe Express card.
