iPad hitting nine more countries this Friday

Apple has just let word out that it’ll be bringing its super-selling slate to nine new markets. The Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore are all getting their hands on the device this Friday, July 23. We were just remarking on how the iPad’s sales pace had slowed down recently, but this expansion in markets should move things along toward rounding the next milestone. Local pricing hasn’t yet been revealed, but it’s not like there’s long to wait now. “Many” more countries are promised before the end of the year, so don’t despair if your local Apple Store isn’t stocking the iPad just yet.

iOS 4.0.1 hitting iPhones right this second (update: 3.2.1 for iPads, too)

Well it’s not the full 4.1 we were expecting… but here’s a little tidbit from Apple. One of the main features? The update “improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display.” Interesting. We’re updating some devices right now, and will report back with what we find.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update:
It looks like iOS 3.2.1 for iPad is coming down the tube, as well. We’ll let you know what changes we’re seeing!

Update 2: Here’s a quick before-and-after shot of the signal meter. Clearly, Apple wasn’t yanking any chains about changing the sizes of those leftmost bars.

Hayao Miyazaki Calls the iPad Disgusting

totororain.jpg

Hayao Miyazaki is an animation genius–some (many, really) would no doubt argue that he is the animation genius of his generation, the guiding force behind such films as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away.

He is, however, not much of a technology enthusiast. Mizaki doesn’t own a computer or a fax machine or a DVD player. He also rarely watches television. And as for an iPad, forget about it.

Speaking with Neppuu magazine, the animator had some less than complementary things to say about Apple’s wildly popular tablet–which he referred to as a “game machine-type thing.” He told the reporter, “For me, there is no feeling of admiration or no excitement whatsoever,” going on to call the device “disgusting.”

He also went on to compare the swipe gestures used to control the device to–well, let’s just say it’s something that teenagers tend to do…a lot…when they’re alone. Um, we’ll let Gizmodo take it from here.

mSpot brings movie rentals to the iPad, works just fine over 3G

mSpot brings movie rentals to the iPad, works just fine over 3G

If you find yourself a little unimpressed with Netflix‘s Instant selection and you’re needing to rent something a bit newer right now, the new iPad-optimized version of the mSpot movie streaming app should fit all up in your niche. For between $2.99 and $3.99 you can rent and watch a movie streaming right to your little slab of delight over either 3G or WiFi, though we’re told those who do it via 802.11 can expect higher quality. You can also rent movies on your home computer, pause them there, and then resume playback on your iPad right where you left off. Handy when it’s time to run to the train and you just can’t wait to see whether George Clooney’s Up in the Air character manages to find room for true companionship in his backpack.

Otterbox iPad Commuter and Defender Cases Available for Pre-Order

OtterBox iPad Defender.jpg
If you’re in the market for a seriously durable case for your Apple iPad, you’ll be glad to know that OtterBox is now taking pre-orders for their new iPad cases.
The $89.95 Defender case offers multiple layers of protection with a high impact polycarbonate shell on the inside and a durable silicone skin on the outside. The case has an integrated fold-out stand and a removable door that allows access to the iPad dock. A snap-on front cover provides exceptional screen protection while the iPad is not in use. When you need to use the device, it snaps securely to the back of the case for hassle-free storage.
The $64.95 Commuter Case is slim and slightly less rugged than the Defender case, while still offering superior protection for your iPad. It has a polycarbonate outer shell and an inner lining of silicone to protect your iPad from drops and scratches. A removable dock door allows you to dock your iPad without having to remove it from the case.
Both cases feature silicone plugs, which help to protect the headphone jack and sync port from moisture and dust while also keeping them accessible. The Defender and Commuter iPad cases are now available for pre-order on the OtterBox Web site, and are expected to ship within seven to ten days.

How-to: Install Flash on your jailbroken iPad (for real)

https://i0.wp.com/www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/flashipadeng1.jpg

We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It’s called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn’t do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we’re told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let’s try this out, shall we? It’s not point-and-click simple, but it’s not that hard, either. Full instructions after the break.

Pressure-sensitive drawing headed to iPad in free software library (video)

“The iPad’s IPS panel is pressure-sensitive, you say?” No, that’s not quite right, but with some clever software and a special capacitive stylus, the folks at Ten One Design built a convincing proof of concept anyhow. While we’re not quite sure how it works, the current theory states that the soft tip of the stylus expands like a brush when you press it down, generating a “larger press” that can be detected by the hooks in Ten One’s code — which they soon plan to share as a free software library (assuming Apple allows) with developers around the world. See it in action in a video after the break, and if you’re feeling your inner Rorschach today, let us know what you see in the above drawing.

Flash 10.1 ported to iPad, burninates the countryside (video)

Take it with a grain of salt, but it’s looking like some prayers have been answered on this Fourth of July — Flash (or is that “Frash”?) is running on this man’s iPad, cleverly ported from Android. The YouTube video claims that by using a compatibility layer, the Android runtime can play Flash content natively in Safari, but only on iPad so far — iPhone 3GS support is planned soon, as is iOS 4, and there’s a call for developers to move the project forward at GitHub. We’ve no way of determining its legitimacy at this moment, but it sure seems like Comex (he of the iPad “Spirit” jailbreak) has outdone himself this time, and hey, where there’s smoke, there’s fire, right? See Strongbad answer emails on iOS, right after the break.

Update: It appears Comex has indeed been working on this project for some time; a second blurry video after the break (running on iPhone) shows us what it used to look like.

iPad arcade cabinet brings April Fools’ joke to life (video)

Nope, this isn’t the first iPad mod you’ll have seen, but it’s likely to be the biggest crowd pleaser yet. Inspired by the iCade cabinet — an April Fools’ joke that had most of us asking where we could buy one — this really real arcade cabinet integrates Apple’s slate, hooks it up to a set of old school controls, and lets users go to town with such old timer classics as Mr. Do! It’s still in prototype form, hence the boxy exterior, but the action on screen is looking as good as you’d expect. See it on video after the break.

Malaysia Airlines now offers iPad check-in (video)

It’s getting easier and easier to enjoy in-flight entertainment on Apple’s briskly moving tablet, but why wait till you get to the gate to dive in? If you’re flying out of Kuala Lumpur, you can play with that 9.7-inch IPS touchscreen while you daydream of that time that watched Entrapment with your soulmate, book your flight, find departure times and even check in at dedicated kiosks. Adapting its iPhone application MHMobile for iPad use, Malaysia Airlines has installed five terminals at Kuala Lumpur Sentral so far — where the company presently serves just 900 customers a day. See the interface in action after the break, or just download the existing app at our more coverage link if you’re in search of that elusive globetrotter feeling.
