Visualized: Acer’s Iconia Tab A500 is ‘a better choice’ than the iPad (update: video!)

We were making our way through Taipei’s sublime metro system this week and what did we see on the side of the stairway? Why, it was a collection of iPad images, but rather than an Apple-funded advert, this was an Acer-instigated bit of spec sheet trash talk. The captions beneath the images read, in order: “no open operating system, no high resolution display, no Dolby Surround Sound, no Flash, no microSD, no USB port. Why do you want to choose this type of tablet?” Gracing the opposite wall was the tablet that ticked the “yes” boxes to all those items, Acer’s own Iconia Tab A500. Perhaps once Acer figures out the answer to its own question, it can stop overhauling itself and get back to the job of chopping the iPad’s market share down to size. You say you want a revolution? Well, you know… . you might get one if you’re a patient Windows user. With Windows’ eighth major release (at least according to Microsoft’s math), its name is becoming metaphorical. Taking on a default look that is rooted in Windows Phone 7 — the first “Windows” to eschew windows — with a smattering of Media Center, the next major version of Windows marks an overhaul of the initial user interface. Indeed, it is even a more radical departure than Apple made between Mac OS X and iOS, which preserved a scaled-down dock and icons, or between Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.

Apple’s and Microsoft’s approaches are similar in at least one way — each has one operating system for PCs and another for phones. Clearly, though, the longtime operating system rivals have taken different tacks with tablets.

Engadget will be broadcasting live from WWDC!

Yes, of course we’ll be bringing you the full liveblog action from WWDC, and as ever you’ll be able to read along as the biggest Apple news of the summer is unveiled. But this year we’re bringing you more: two live broadcasts to give you some extra analysis. At around 10:30am ET (that’s 7:30am on the best coast), before Apple kicks off the show, Tim and Darren will go over the expected big announcements for the day, talking iCloud, iOS 5, and Mac OS X Lion. Then, once the dust settles, join us again for a second live broadcast to dive deep into the day’s announcements and any other surprises Mr. Jobs has in store for us. Hopefully we’ll all survive.

Camino 1.5 Released for Mac Users

Camino Web Browser 1.5

Camino 1.5, a Web browser for the Mac OS, was just released offering a slew of new features that will undoubtedly appeal to a lot of people. At the core of the browser lies the same rendering engine that Firefox 2 uses, which is good news because as the Firefox browser continues to gain in popularity the number of Firefox-compatible websites keeps increasing.

Here are some of the other things Camino 1.5 brings to the table:

  • In-line spell checking! This is Firefox 2’s most notable feature, but Camino does it a little differently. While it does check text fields for misspellings as you type, it actually uses the Mac OS X dictionary instead of providing an additional dictionary like Firefox does.
  • Session restore – just like Firefox, Camino will now offer to restore your tabs after a crash. It can also be set to automatically restore your tabs after you restart the browser.
  • Keychain compatibility – use the same Keychain entries for both Safari and Camino
  • Feed notifications – Camino recognizes when there is a feed available for a site, and if you want it will use the Mac OS X default feed reader to subscribe to it.
  • Single window mode – prevents sites from opening another window.
  • Improved pop-up blocker – blocks pop-ups and also has Flash blocking capabilities (with the option to whitelist a site).
  • Gecko rendering engine 1.8.1
  • Resizable search field
  • and more…

As I was reading around there were quite a few users reporting constant crashes with the newest version, but it seems to be attributed to the use of CamiScript and CamiTools. I’m guessing that’s because the tools are not supported add-ons for Camino 1.5, and have not been updated to work with the newest version of the browser. Actually, CamiTools isn’t even being developed anymore so they removed the download from their site.

A quick glance at the above photo might have you believing that’s the site of a Microsoft Store being constructed; actually, it’s an Apple Store. Yesterday, in the Jungfernstieg section of Hamburg, Germany, a group going by the name of “.WAV Collective” apparently vandalized the soon-to-be Apple retail location. They casually went up to the building posing as a team of construction workers, cordoned off a work site, and proceeded to screw pre-made panels, forming a Windows logo, to the side of the store’s black veil — all in broad daylight. Looks like the old question of Mac vs. PC just got a bit more confusing over in Europe. Don’t believe us? Have a look at the collective’s own video recap of the events posted after the break.

MobileNotifier dev snapped up by Apple to work on iOS framework?

We said that MobileNotifier unobtrusive notifications might be the single best reason to jailbreak your iOS device, and it sounds like Apple may agree — Redmond Pie reports that lead developer Peter Hajas has been spirited away by the Cupertino computer company to work on iOS itself. Hajas wrote that he was taking a break from MobileNotifier, and some newfangled detective work dug up the rest — a thinly-veiled reference to Steve Jobs, a tweet mentioning a California “fruit” company, and finally an alleged screenshot of Hajas’ entry in Apple’s employee database. We’re feeling slightly bittersweet about the whole thing, to tell the truth, as while we’d rather not have to smash our iPhone chains, the notion that this is all happening now suggests we won’t see greatly improved notifications in iOS 5, come Monday.

iTunes leak suggests ‘Automatic Download’ over-the-air updates are coming in iOS 5

In the lead-up to this year’s WWDC, we so far know three things for sure: Apple will unveil OS X Lion, iCloud, and… automatic, over-the-air app updates for iOS 5, apparently. While searching for updates in iTunes, a MacRumors reader stumbled upon this page, which alludes to an “Automatic Download” feature that allows for wireless syncing. Also, the fact that Apple went out of its way to say “…if your device has Automatic Download enabled for apps” makes us wonder what else we’ll soon be able to update over the air. The company has since pulled the tattletale page in iTunes, but MacRumors grabbed a screenshot while it was still live. Looks like the cat’s out of the bag, but we’ll let you know when Jobs & Co. make it official on Monday.

Apple’s iOS devices may lack native memory expansion, but PhotoFast has now come up with solution that just about bests the official camera connection kit. What you’re looking at here is the i-FlashDrive, a memory dongle that sports both a USB plug and an Apple 30-pin dock connector, and it comes in three flavors starting from 8GB at $95 up to 32GB at $180. What’s more, the drive also works with a free Cupertino-approved app that provides both external and internal file management (for music, photos, movies, and more), contact backup, and native MP3 playback.
