Sign of the times: iPad 2 heads to Toys R Us

When we were younger, we lusted after the top-shelf electric train set. The pow-pow-Power Wheels jeep. The Virtual Boy. These days, that rich kid down the street will have a very different sort of toy. When ModMyi reported that Toys ‘R’ Us was training associates to sell the iPad 2 weeks ago, we thought it might be a leftover April Fools’, but sure enough, Geoffrey the Giraffe will begin pushing Apple’s tablet to children who don’t want to grow up as soon as tomorrow morning.

How would you change the Verizon iPhone?

It’s an iPhone 4… but not the original iPhone 4. Verizon Wireless became the first CDMA carrier in the States to call an Apple smartphone one of its own, and the resulting handset is eerily similar to the AT&T variant in most regards. That said, we’re sure that a few of you folks would have done things differently if given the design credentials needed to do so, and this is place for you to vent. Would you have added any features to this guy not already found on the GSM iPhone 4? Offered a Big Red-exclusive color? Thrown an LTE radio in there? Changed up the antenna layout? Included a secondary display, Echo-style? Go on and get creative in comments below — you never know what suggestions may shape the shape of the iPhone 5! (Or something like that.)

Time Warner Cable brings back Discovery, Fox channels to its iPad app

Just a couple of weeks after removing several channels from its live TV streaming iPad app Time Warner Cable has added most of them back again. The notable exception here are networks owned by Viacom, which it took to court last week. So far, other than announcing Discovery and Fox channels are back on the TWCable TV iPad app, we weren’t able to get anything other than a no comment out of anyone at the companies involved. That means we don’t know if the channel providers have spontaneously come around to Time Warner’s way of thinking (this seems unlikely) or if it has simply decided to press the issue. We’ll see who is suing who next week, until then you can enjoy watching whatever happens to be on Fox News Channel, FX or National Geographic (if you actually do enjoy that, we don’t like to live by programmers broadcast schedules – DVR4LIFE) on your iPad as much as you like.

Apple patent application reveals more projector possiblities, including a projector-equipped laptop

We’ve already seen a few patent applications that suggest Apple is at least mulling over the idea of using projectors for one purpose or another, and another newly published one has now offered a bit more fodder for speculation. Described as a “display system having coherent and incoherent light sources,” the patent application suggests that the projector would be laser-based, and be both cheaper and more power efficient than conventional light projectors, while also overcoming the so-called “speckle” problem sometimes seen with laser projectors. What’s perhaps most interesting, however, is that the patent application also suggests the projector could be integrated into other devices — in fact, one of the claims specifically mentions a laptop with an integrated projector, as artfully illustrated above.

Why Are So Many People Dancing in Apple Stores? [Video]

Yesterday, while cruising through my normal tour through the darkest, most bizarre corners of the internet, I came across a jarring (albeit established) little tech phenomenon. People love dancing in Apple Stores. Like, dancing like maniacs. Why? Why not? Brilliant. More »

CyberNotes: Download, Convert, and Play YouTube Videos on your PC

This article was written on February 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

Online video is the latest rage on the Internet, and it is almost mind boggling how much of a household name YouTube has become. Some people, such as lonelygirl15, have become YouTube SuperStars. In fact, lonleygirl15 even appeared on the Jay Leno show!

PeekVid That is just one side of what the video sharing sites are used for. Besides for personal use, many sites (especially DailyMotion) are becoming a hub for copyrighted video content. Ashley recently covered a site called PeekVid which brings television shows and movies into a central location so that they can easily be viewed. Alluc is another site similar in nature to PeekVid, and between those two sites you can surely find something good to watch.

So what can you do if you don’t want to watch the videos while being connected to the Internet? Simple! You can download them and play them at your leisure. I’m going to give you a bunch of tips on how to get the videos onto your computer.

–Download a Video–

Downloading the videos that you want is probably just about the easiest part of the video process. There are so many tools out there to get the job done and they are so easy to find. Depending on what you’re looking to do these three tools will get the job done fast:

  • VideoDownloader – This is a Firefox extension that works with all kinds of sites and content. Not only can you download videos from YouTube, Google, MetaCafe, iFilm, and DailyMotion but it will also let you save MP3′s and QuickTime videos that are embedded in sites. The list of sites that it supports is quite extensive so I’m not going to list them all here, but rest assured that this extension should get the job done.
  • KeepVid – This is my personal favorite because it doesn’t require you to install any extension or application to download the videos. You can simply enter a URL into the site or you can use the bookmarklet that they have available for even faster conversions.
  • GrabYouTubes – I wanted to include this service because it will surely come in handy when downloading videos from the PeekVid service that I mentioned above. All you have to do is provide the URL to the PeekVid movie or TV show that you want and it will quickly provide download links for all of the parts listed on that page. This is a lot easier than retrieving the download links one at a time. For more information on how to use the GrabYouTubes read Ashley’s post on PeekVid.

–Convert a Video–

If you didn’t notice most of the videos that you will download will be in the file format FLV. This isn’t something that most computers will recognize immediately and let you start playing, so you might want to convert it into a more recognizable format. Here are two ways that you can do the conversion:

  • Online FLV Converter – This service is free and the great thing is that you don’t have to install a single application on your computer to have it converte videos. It can take a FLV file and transform it into an AVI, MOV, MP4, or 3GP so that you can watch the video on just about any device. This service is primarily geared towards YouTube since it does allow you to directly enter in a YouTube URL, but you can also enter in the URL to a FLV file (found using one of the utilities mentioned above). After giving it that information the service will download the video from the site and re-encode it into the format that you want. I tried it out and on smaller files (1MB or so) it works great, but I also tried a 10MB file that ended up error out. So if you’re trying to convert a large movie try the next solution.
    FLV Converter
  • Super Video Converter – This video conversion utility is by far the most popular and happens to be one of the most CyberMarked articles on our site. This free application will let you convert a FLV file into a large array of other file formats, including AVI, MOV, iPod, Pocket PC, WMV, and PSP. It also allows you to customize various options so that the resulting video is exactly what you want.

–Play/Watch a Video–

You don’t have to convert a video just to watch it, though. If you have the right tool you can actually watch the FLV file right on your PC bypassing the whole conversion process. I looked around for at least an hour trying to find a nice player that was not only simple but offered what I thought was some very necessary features. I wanted to be able to play from a file that I downloaded and most importantly I wanted a fullscreen mode. Actually, the most important thing was that the application be freeware that wasn’t bloated with things that I didn’t want to use, but the fullscreen mode was still a critical deciding factor.

nFLVPlayer

The result that I came up with was nFLVPlayer (download mirror). The application takes just seconds to install and it is simple enough for anyone to understand. The configuration options are minimal so power users may not get much joy from it, but you can still adjust the brightness, contrast, and a few other things. This program definitely gets my stamp of approval!

–Overview–

Now you’re going to be all set the next time that you want to take your videos with you on the go, which is great for those of us who don’t have access to the Internet 24/7. There are so many tools out there that can replace any of the ones that I listed above, but I covered the ones that I had experience with. With that being said we want to hear what you’re using to download, convert, and watch videos.

Intel Talks To Potential Thunderbolt Buyers

ThundeboltConnect.jpg
Intel is looking to expand the Thunderbolt brand, which means Intel wants other companies to buy into the new technology quickly. So Intel is doing something about it by sending interested companies kits about the Thunderbolt technology. As of currently, Apple is the only brand that is using the new technology.

Intel has not listed the names of the other companies who have expressed interest. However, we can assume that it will be other computer manufactures. That does not mean in the near future other uses will be found.

Intel has not said if any company is planning to use it besides Apple at this point, but it looks hopeful that it could wind up being a widely accepted technology.

Rumor: White iPhone 4 to Land in Stores End of April

Apple has delayed the white iPhone 4 multiple times due to unspecified manufacturing problems. Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired.com

Apple is finally releasing the white model of the iPhone 4, almost a year behind schedule, according to a report.

Multiple sources told Bloomberg that Apple was preparing to release the white iPhone 4 by the end of April for both the Verizon and AT&T networks, 10 months after the black model debuted.

Apple said earlier this year that the white iPhone 4 was delayed until this spring because of manufacturing problems, but never specified the issue. One source tells Bloomberg that one problem was the white paint peeling under heat.

The different color option could provide a possible alternative to buyers eagerly awaiting the fifth-generation iPhone, which may not be released this summer. Sources told Apple blogger Jim Dalrymple that an iPhone 5 would not be introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, even though iPhone upgrades have traditionally been launched at this annual event.

For Apple, releasing an iPhone 5 later would make sense, because it would give the white iPhone, as well as the two-month-old Verizon iPhone 4, more shelf life.

Keep Your MacBook Safe With A Sustainable Bamboo Case

silva.jpg

Your iPad isn’t the only one of your Apple gadgets that can have a bambo case, now your MacBook can as well.

The Silva case is available for both the 13 and 15 inch models of the laptop, and is lined with wool felt to keep everything inside safe and sound. It also features a leather strap, but, best of all, is made completely from sustainable bamboo.

“Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth,” Silva’s site reads. “Unlike trees, all bamboo plants have the potential to grow to a full height and girth, in a single growing season of three to four months. This helps minimize our dependency on our forests therefore making bamboo a truly ‘green’ product.”

The hand made cases can be purchased here for $179.99.
