The iPad 2: Complete Coverage [Roundup]

The iPad 2 is here. And yeah, it’s pretty great. Despite the early looks, we’re still finding surprises. Like? The screen is definitely better than the original iPad’s. That’s just the beginning. More »

Is your iPad 2 backlight bleeding? (video)

Now that many of you have collected and used your second generation iPad tablets for a few hours, we’re starting to see the inevitable reports of defects. Thus far, two issues have bubbled to the surface. The first issue — yellow spots beneath the LCD glass — is reminiscent of the same fresh-from-the-factory iPhone 4 issue that resolved itself just as soon as the bonding agent used for the LCD glass had time to evaporate. The second issue, which is being conflated with the first, is characterized by light bleeding through from the outer edges of the LCD panel. The bleeding is most noticeable when watching a dark scene in a movie or using an app with a black background as demonstrated in the picture above and video embedded after the break. For those affected, the issue can be minimized or exacerbated by adjusting the brightness in settings. So what say you dear reader, are you also a bleeder?

Gates and Jobs Together Again, Watch the Full Video

This article was written on May 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs

There are some big things going on at the D Conference, with the highlight being the meeting of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates for a chat conducted by Walt Mosberg and Kara Swisher. Before I get to talking about the main event, lets take a look at some of the other things that had been going on there.

Steve Jobs had some one-on-one time with Mossberg where he refused to say if there was anything new in the iPhone that hadn’t already been revealed. Jobs did say that it was shipping late June, and he nodded in agreement when asked if that meant the last day in June.

Then there is the Steve Ballmer interview who does one of those oh so cool “gun clicks” (like Fonzie) when complimented on having one of the best selling brown devices on the market. Later on they go through a demonstration of the Microsoft Surface table that was just announced by Microsoft.

Now on to the main spectacle…Bill Gates and Steve Jobs together once again! A lot of people were there, such as Engadget, who provided live coverage of the event. In my opinion, rare things like this cannot be captured in words. Below you’ll find several video segments from the actual interview, but first I’ll briefly talk about what each part includes (in case you don’t want to sit through more than an hour of footage. It is pretty entertaining though!).

Prologoue (7 minutes): This has all of the clips from when Jobs and Gates previously met, including the Apple Dating Game show! It’s pretty funny and I highly recommend it!

Part 1 (15 minutes): This first part is mostly Jobs and Gates coming on to the stage, and then looking back over the course of their history. The best part was at the end when Jobs quotes former Apple CEO Gil Amelio, who said “Apple is like a ship with a whole in the bottom, leaking water, and my job is to get the ship pointed in the right direction.”

Part 2 (11 minutes): They discuss the art of the Mac vs. PC commercials, where Jobs says that the point of the commercials is for Mac and PC’s to like eachother. Gates looked a little perplexed at that. They then go on to talk about the Zune and iPod.

Part 3 (15 minutes): Jobs and Gates talk about the things they regret. This segment was a little boring as they talk about what they expect for the future, but they beat around the bush too much.

Part 4 (8 minutes): Discussion continues on the future of devices (more specifically 5-years from now), and Jobs discusses how they try to partner with more people rather than create everything themselves.

Part 5 (11 minutes): Where are the companies going graphically? Mossberg says that the graphics for both Vista and Mac OS aren’t all that different from 10-years ago.

Part 6 (4 minutes): What’s the biggest mis-understanding between the Microsoft and Apple…Jobs says that they’ve kept their marriage a secret for over a decade! Gates is then left speechless. Jobs concludes it with almost a sentimental quote describing their relationship.

This concludes the chat with the interviewers, and now they are moving on to questions from the audience.

Part 7 (19 minutes): Gates and Jobs answer some of the questions the audience has. About 12 minutes and 30 seconds into it they discuss what they’ve learned from watching each other.

Now here are all the videos. They don’t really require all of your attention, so you could probably just listen to them in the background while you get some other work done:

College Student Sold Spot in iPad 2 Line for $900

Amanda Foote waited outside the premiere Apple Store on the Upper East Side of New York City for 41 hours and only got a few hours of sleep over the course of a couple days. But here’s the thing. She didn’t even want an iPad 2. What she did want was a nice offer from someone a bit wealthier who didn’t have time to wait around.

In addition to the strain of waiting dozens of hours in line, Foote had to deal with a thief who stole her box of donuts while she was sleeping. But it was all worth it when Hazen Sayed, an app developers, was strapped for time. He had to leave Friday night for a business trip and wanted to take a brand new iPad 2 with him.

Kudos, Amanda! You have more patience than I do.

iPad 2 shipping in two to three weeks

If you’ve been dying to get your hands on an iPad 2, but didn’t have the forethought or wherewithal to stand in line for one, then get ready to wait, because Apple’s online store is showing delays of up two to three weeks for the slate. You can go ahead and order one now, but there’s a chance you won’t get your hands on the slab until April — unless, of course, one of these guys is waiting in line to buy you a gift.

iFixit has an iPad 2, and they’re ripping it apart (video)

It only took a few short hours for iFixit to get its hands on an iPad 2 (the WiFi variety), and of course, they immediately started to tear it apart. It’s a necessarily delicate task, but they’re making progress as we speak, and here are the first things that jump out to us: there is much less open space inside the iPad 2 than the original model, and the battery is very large. There aren’t any huge surprises in here internally yet, but it’s got the 1GHz A5 CPU, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of Toshiba TH58NVG7D2FLA89 NAND Flash. Like we said, they’re still at it with this one, and we’ll update as they do. Until then, hit up the source for all the photos.

Update: And they’re done! Head over to check out all the shots of the iPad 2 in its exposed form, but don’t try it out on your own. The new glass adhesion makes it practically impossible to open this thing without shattering the screen, so the crew will be working hard for a better solution. Vid’s after the break, though.

Gadget Lab Podcast: Motorola Atrix, AirPlay and WebOS

In this week’s podcast, we can’t avoid it: We start off by talking about the iPad 2, which some people have hyperbolically called the “best gadget they’ve ever reviewed.” It goes on sale Friday, and we’ll have more to say about it once we’ve had a chance to test it fully.

For those of you who have iPad 2 envy but are stuck with an iPad 1, we have a nice $25 cover from MyCase that says “Don’t Panic” on the front, like some other electronic books we could mention.

There’s a new version of Flipboard out, which adds social search and some other new features. But the thing we’re excited about is a Flipboard version of Wired.com, which lets you read all the awesome content on this website, except in a more beautiful format that’s designed just for the iPad screen. It looks nice, and it’s free in the Apple App Store.

Speaking of tablets, there’s news about HP’s tablet operating system, webOS. In addition to the upcoming HP TouchPad, it will also be included on all of HP’s PCs starting in 2012, which should increase the potential audience for webOS developers.

Wired.com reviews editor Michael Calore comes onscreen to talk about the Motorola Atrix, a high-end 4G Android phone that we recently reviewed. It’s a great phone — but he’s less excited about the optional laptop-like dock that you can get for it.

Finally, we talk about AirPlay, Apple’s standard for streaming audio and video wirelessly. It’s a feature in the badass Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air.
