Waiting for the iPhone 5? Then you might want to put Tuesday, October 4th in your diary. According to All Things D, this is the date Apple has scheduled for the new iPhone’s launch. The event, revealed to All Things D by “sources close to the situation,” will be presided over by Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook.
It makes sense. The rumors have long pegged a late September or early October date for the announcement of the iPhone 4’s successor, and iOS 5 — which will doubtless come pre-installed on the new phone — is due in the fall, which starts right about now.
The news that Tim Cook will be headlining is slightly more surprising. Cook was always more of a behind-the-scenes executive, and some expected that he’d remain so as CEO, letting Steve Jobs’ long-time stage companion Phil Schiller or iOS chief Scott Forstall become the public faces of Apple. If All Things D’s sources are correct, then it looks like Cook is set to fully embrace all of Jobs’ old roles at the company.
Still, we don’t have long to wait to find out. And if all goes well, the real star of the show will be the iPhone 5, whatever new goodies it brings.

While we’ve had access to Adobe’s Flash Player 11 in beta form for months, the company announced it will finally get official, along with Air 3, next month. Among the many new features included are support for accelerated 2D and 3D graphics with a claimed 1,000 times faster performance than Flash Player 10 and Air 2. That’s enough to enable “console-quality” gaming on both computers and connected TVs and on mobile devices (Android, iOS, Playbook) with a pre-release version of Flash 11 (a production release you can take on the go is expected in “the near future”). Other new options include allowing developers to package Air 3 along with their apps in a single install, HD video quality on multiple platforms including iOS, DRM for video rentals, 64-bit support and more. We have yet to receive official word on this, but All Things Digital is reporting today that Apple’s next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5. Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion. The site’s sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase “within a few weeks” of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. Lonely and living in the city, but don’t have the patience or maturity for Man’s Best Friend? Well, you could always take a TankBot under your wing. Desk Pets’ palm-sized four-wheeler first whirred into our hands earlier this year at the International Toy Fair, promising a variety of play modes and iOS control. Now, the team behind the roving gizmo has finally released it to retailers’ shelves, tacking on a $25 price tag and adding Android compatibility. The mini-bot operates in a trio of configurations: an autonomous mode that makes use of its infrared sensors to navigate obstacles, a free-roaming option that’ll have it wandering aimlessly and, most importantly, a free mobile app that puts dual joystick control on your Apple device’s screen or universal remote (connected via headphone jack) for steering on an Android phone. Don’t expect to squeeze hours of fun out of this little tchotchke, though, as its retractable USB port only gets you about 15 minutes of gee whizzery. Say hello to Engadget Distro. At its most molecular level, it’s nothing more than a series of ones and zeros, cobbled together in a compiler and made to look like words and images on Apple’s iPad. But in reality, it’s something far greater — something that the entire Engadget staff couldn’t be more proud to have their names on. Distro is the week in technology news, distilled down and reformatted into a beautiful, offline view that can be enjoyed anywhere. You know, like one of those regional jets still awaiting their rightful Gogo injection. It’s taken its sweet time, but folks who weren’t exactly keen on the Promise Pegasus finally have a compact option for putting their Thunderbolt port to good use. LaCie has just announced that it’s Little Big Disk Thunderbolt external drive — a first for the outfit — is available to purchase. For those keeping count, it’s only the second overall T-bolt drive to hit the scene, with this 1.4-pounder boasting a pair of 2.5-inch drives, support for JBOD / RAID 1 / RAID 0 and a typically metallic chassis that measures 1.6- x 5.5- x 3.3-inches. We’re promised speeds as high as 480MB/sec (for SSD arrangements) and 190MB/sec (for HDD models), and users can daisy chain several of ’em to hit transfer rates of around 800MB/sec. These guys should be available starting today (though Apple’s online shop currently has a “one to two week” wait), with the 1TB 7200RPM edition retailing for $399, and the 2TB 5400RPM model listing for $499. We’re still awaiting word on the specifics surrounding the October-bound 240GB SSD variant, but those who’d rather press their luck for a free one can enter the ongoing contest in the More Coverage link below.

The use of the Apple logo may have riled up some lawyers
Got an old 2.5-inch hard drive lying around but don’t know what to do with it? Or worse, you have a fully-functioning external drive but its just too hideous to remove from the closet (<cough> Lacie </cough>)? Well, if you are also a Mac owner, there’s good news for you in the shape of the iHdd 2 Slim External Hard Drive Enclosure.
Looking a lot like an oversized iPhone, this enclosure ships empty, ready to be filled with the bare 2.5-inch drive you already own (up to 500GB in size). The drive connects vie USB, is bus-powered and the Apple logo lights up when it’s in action.
Best of all, the enclosure costs just $26. Or rather, it did. Amazon says that “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock,” making me suspect that the unauthorized use of the Apple logo has led to some legal shenanigans. Hopefully not, because I actually do have a stack of otherwise useless 2.5-inch drives in my closet.
