The collectives behind the Tweephone, UP digital Bureau and Unteleported tech agency, claim that it’s the first analog Twitter client. We find that hard to believe but, while we’ve seen rotary phone-based Twitter tools before and analog meters that measure microblogging activity, we couldn’t come up with a single example of a client that lets you punch in messages through non-digital means. Even if it’s not the first of its kind, the Tweephone is still a pretty neat hack. Inside the old-school chassis is the ubiquitous Arduino, which interprets your pulls of the dial as letters. Like a phone with only a dial pad, you’ll have to ring up numbers multiple times to get the right letter (i.e. dial “2” three times to get a “c”). It definitely not the most efficient method for sending out 140-character missives, but certainly one of the more unique. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Lego CD / DVD ripper lets you drop your physical media — literally (video)

If the only thing standing between you and a full abandonment of physical media is the tedious task of ripping all of your CDs and DVDs, boy have we got the Lego-based gadget for you. Paul Rea whipped up this little beauty — it’s an Arduino-powered Lego arm that swings to pick up a disc, deposit it in the drive and then drop it (perhaps a bit too literally) into a finished pile. It’s not quite perfect — the arm is a bit loud as it moves, and anyone who’s ever owned CDs or DVDs may likely grimace as the thing tosses finished discs into a pile, but it’s an entertaining break from what can ultimately prove an arduous task.

We’re more than a little enamored with Arduino and its DIY microcontroller ilk. But we’ll admit, there are a few limitations that the compulsive prototyper might find bothersome. Chief amongst them is the lack of modularity, Now, sure, you can easily add all sorts of sensors, ports and radios to your Uno (or Duemilanove if you’re old school) but that generally requires piling shield, upon shield, upon shield, until you’ve got a stack of boards three-feet high. And, if you want to use an ARM chip instead of an AVR for a project? Well that’s a whole other set of boards. Kevin Greene has decided to address these perceived “weaknesses” with BoardX — a modular, open-source prototyping platform.

How Arduino got its start: a behind the scenes revelation

Plenty of tales have cropped up through the years focusing on the roots of Arduino — a tiny circuit board that holds a special place in the heart of every modern-day DIYer — but a recent expose from the folks at Ieee Spectrum has a behind-the-scenes look that’ll impress even historians. Massimo Banzi is the name, and Bar di Re Arduino is the place. The former is hailed as an Italian cofounder of the project he dubbed Arduino in honor of the latter, and in time, four more folks would join him to create what would become a complete gamechanger in the universe of homegrown electronics. Arduino-powered glove brings real sound effects to your make believe gun show (video)

The days of air-punching invisible Daleks and making your own sound effects are over: a team from Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction course have built a glove that does it all for you. The Augmented Hyper-Reality Glove can identify upper-cuts and karate chops using flex and tilt sensors and play the accompanying sound effect using an Arduino-powered Adafruit wave shield. We can see some potential downsides — flirtatious finger-gun fusillades accompanied by the sound of cannon fire might just ruin your date. Beeri: Siri’s new best friend cracks open a cold one (video)

We already know that Siri can send texts, check the weather or find you a restaurant, but did you know she can also fetch you a beer. Well, sort of… with a little hacking. The folks at Redpepper dreamed up Beeri, an RC truck that cracks open a can of brew whenever it receives a tweet instructing it to “pour.” Since you can text updates to Twitter (40404) and Siri can text, that means it’s perfectly simple to tell Beeri it’s Miller time. Whenever the Arduino embedded in the truck detects a mention with the word “pour,” it drives forward, slamming a beer can into a puncture wall that drips into a funnel, filling a cup beneath the table top. It’s a pretty ingenious system, and you can see it in action after the break. We just hope Beeri has a day job — looking at all that head, it’s clear she wouldn’t last a day as a bartender.

Art school — incubator of tomorrow’s next great visionaries, or think tank for the Robot Apocalypse? Sorry folks, but this latest Arduino frankenconcept looks to be working against Team Humanity. Part of Art Institute of Chicago BFA student Daniel Jay Bertner’s recent oeuvre, the Tracking Interactive Mechanism (or T.I.M., for short) uses a webcam operating OpenCV to follow gallery-traipsing gawkers’ faces, and respond to their movements. Careful, though. T.I.M. here bites, or at least makes virtual attempts to pierce your flesh thanks to a hidden photocell mechanism triggered by a viewer’s proximity. There’s just one thing Daniel left out of his wall-mounted, predatory cyborg installation — the requisite Hannibal Lecter soundboard. All right, so technically this isn’t a Rube Goldberg machine (it doesn’t actually perform a task, merely loops endlessly), but the spirit is the same. Students in the Media Interaction and Design program at the University of Applied Sciences FH Johanneum in Graz, Austria strung together a pile of Arduinos to create a chain reaction of unbelievably geeky proportions. Seriously, you just need to watch the video — you know you’re in for a treat when you get Homer Simpson, Darth Vader and Hello Kitty in under one minute. Don’t waste any more time here, hit that read more link and watch more Arduino’s than you can shake a stick at work in tandem.

Four Bit Maze dares you to solve its puzzles, work your way up to the Lament Configuration

Got a relative who keeps cheating his way out of your yew maze? This holiday season, perhaps you should consider a different kind of challenge: Oskar van Deventer’s Four Bit Maze. The apparently simple goal is to move the quartet of sliders from zero to one, but an Arduino UNO microcontroller makes things a bit trickier. It’s programmed with ten different puzzles, each requiring a different sequence of movements to solve. An Arduino Motor Shield operates the motorfaders, and the whole thing’s USB-programmable, meaning you can tweak it to your heart’s content. Arduino, iPod and RFID make beautiful, accessible music together (video)

Magic Music Table RFID

There isn’t actually much new about this awesome DIY project, but it’s the way it brings the various parts together that has us impressed. Designed by Instructables user XenonJohn, with help from software developer David Findlay, the Magic Music Table RFID was designed to let a child with a disability select albums to play back from an iPod touch playlist. The iPod is connected to an Arduino, which tells the device to start playing a particular track based on a selection made with RFID cards. The whole setup is built into a coffee table and the RFID tags are sandwiched inside clear plastic blocks with the album art. You can see it in action in the video after the break and, if you’ve got the patience and skill, you can build your own using the directions at the source link.
