Netflix notches 2 billionth delivery with a Blu-ray disc

2,000,000,000. That’s how many movies Netflix has shipped out since coming on the scene in 1999. Lucky number two billion — Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist on Blu-ray) snagged Clay Shannon a complimentary lifetime subscription (guess he’s not too concerned about the new, higher Blu-ray rates.) It took the company eight years to cross the one billion milestone, and only two for the next billion. While there’s little indication of a slowdown in the two million movies shipped out every day from 58 distribution centers, we wouldn’t be surprised if number 3 billion were just as likely to come as a download than anything else.

Get 15 Free Blu-Ray Movies with PS3 Purchase at Wal-Mart?

blu-ray logo This rumor by no means has been confirmed, but we’re telling you about it so that you can keep your eye out for it. If it’s true, it’s an awesome deal. Rumor has it that starting on November 24th at 8 AM and running through November 25th at 11:59 PM, Wal-Mart is having another “secret” sale. They’ll be selling the 80GB PS3 system for $499 (its usual price) but buyers will be able to choose 10 Blu-Ray titles under $30 for free. Add those 10 to the 5 you already get by mail through Sony’s program, and you’ll have 15 Blu-ray movies worth over $400.

The user who reported this deal at Blu-ray.com says he works at a Wal-Mart in the electronics department which leads me to believe he does actually know what he’s talking about . He said stores were just notified on Saturday and that a link for it won’t be available until about Wednesday. According to what he knows, Wal-Mart is stocking up big for this! He says “For those stores that carry BD already, additional titles are being sent in for the sale.  For those that do not have BD in their store (a small minority), product will be sent to each store specifically for this sale.“

Here we thought Wal-Mart was supporting the HD DVD camp after they sold that Toshiba player for under 100 bucks! Turns out they’re not taking sides, and they’re supporting both pretty equally. Anybody considering buying a Playstation 3 to get 15 free movies if this rumor turns out to be true?

When Samsung’s 2009 Blu-ray player lineup was outed at CES this year, all pricing and release date information was conveniently omitted. At long last, Sammy has pushed out the details we’ve been waiting for at its Spring Fever event in New York City. Granted, the BD-P3600 and BD-P1600 are already on store shelves for $399.99 and $299.99, respectively, but we figured it prudent to pass along those official numbers straight from the source. Of note, we’re also told that the ultrathin BD-P4600 will indeed be coming in April for $499.99, and if Best Buy’s website is to be believed, it’ll be April 19th if we’re talking specifics.

Shuttle’s Mini H7 4500H media PC joins Blu-ray, DVB-S tuner in matrimony

Shuttle‘s back with another mini HTPC, the H7 4500H, only this time you can swap out that DVB-T tuner with a DVB-S for satellite TV. The cost of going for the latter means you have to settle onboard graphics only, but either way you’re still getting DVR capabilities and Windows Media Center. Max configuration for the Vista-based machine includes 2.83GHz Intel Core 2 Quad, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285, 1TB SATA HDD, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and a Blu-ray writer. It’s also got HDMI, SPDIF, eSATA, FireWire and six USB ports. Starting price is around €775 ($1,020), but if you’re planning to get the whole kit and kaboodle, the price jumps to about €1858 ($2,450).

Netflix raising rates for Blu-ray subscribers by around 20 percent

Ruh roh. In a move that will undoubtedly cause an incredibly raucous stir, only to fade away as movie renters realize that Netflix is still the best deal going, America’s most adored by-mail rental service is hiking the price of Blu-ray rentals once again. If you’ll recall, Netflix already implemented a $1 per month fee for Blu-ray customers back in October, and now it’s looking to push that premium higher by around 20 percent across its pricing tiers. The company asserts that the increase (slated to hit April 27th and only applicable to BD customers) is due to it buying more titles on BD to “accommodate the increasing number of Netflix members who prefer renting movies on Blu-ray.” In fact, nearly 10 percent of all Netflix customers are choosing BD now, and obviously these platters cost quite a bit more for anyone (even Netflix) to procure. Samsung’s sleek BD-P3600 Blu-ray player gets hands-on love

Oh sure, we’ve already seen this thing spotted at Best Buy, but there’s just something especially titillating about photos with clarity. CNET‘s UK branch managed to get their camera all up in the BD-P3600‘s area, and they definitely enjoyed what they saw. For starters, the 7.1-channel analog outs are a real boon to those still using that circa-1999 AV receiver, and the bundled WiFi dongle means BD-Live is now entirely more accessible. Granted, we aren’t similarly impressed by the 40 second BD load time, but maybe we’re just spoiled by the hasty OPPO BDP-83. Head on down for a few more looks.

Maingear unloads BD / SSD-equipped mX-L 13.3-inch laptop

Look out, world — a relative no-name has just showed up with a new ultraportable, and it’s darn tough to not pay attention with a specs sheet like this. The Maingear mX-L arrives with a 13.3-inch LED-backlit display (1,280 x 800), a Core 2 Duo CPU, GMA X4500HD graphics, 8GB of DDR2 RAM, 160GB Intel X25-M SSD (or a 500GB HDD for those without the cheddar), a dual-layer Blu-ray reader, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, VGA output, three USB 2.0 sockets and a custom etched top that’s totally take-it-or-leave-it. The unit weighs in at 4.4 pounds and gets going at $1,099.99, but don’t expect that measly four-cell Li-ion to last you through a whole transcontinental flight.

Panasonic CES 2009 Blu-ray / HTIB lineup eyes-on

We were able to spot a few of Panasonic’s latest innovations in the home theater space back at CES 2009, but we got a much more intimate look at things during a recent New York showcase. The new Blu-ray decks look nice, if not a touch plain. Not that everyone wants an Alienware-esque BD deck or anything, but we digress. The Blu-ray HTIB systems were particularly of interest, as these things are perfect for sneaking BD into homes that are currently DVD-only, and while we longed for more information on the portable DMP-B15, the on-hand reps didn’t seem too anxious to gush over technical specifications with us. Their loss, totally.

Samsung BD-P3600 spied at retail

After the BD-P1600 broke cover, it was just a matter of time until we got an in the wild look at Samsung’s BD-3600 Blu-ray player, seen here hanging out at a Best Buy as some commenters had indicated. That $399 price is enough to pick up the BD-Live storage, 7.1 analog outs and 802.11b/g/n WiFi dongle missing from the BD-P1600, while super slim wall mounting bliss remains the exclusive domain of the BD-P4600. Deciding between this and the DMP-BD80 without some real hands on time may be tough, but at least until Amazon has some HD on top of their VOD, Netflix streaming is probably enough to sway our decision.

Panasonic’s 2009 VIERA Cast Blu-ray players priced, shipping in April

We first got a peek at Panasonic’s DMP-BD60, DMP-BD80 and VHS-packing DMP-BD70V at CES, and now they’ve got official pricetags ahead of their April release. Beyond the VIERA Cast support for Amazon VOD, YouTube and other Internet content, this year’s decks also include improvements in power consumption, with the BD60 drawing 16% less juice than last year’s DMP-BD35. The DMP-BD60 can be had for a suggested $299, while the BD80 and BD70V are both priced at $399, depending on whether you prefer VHS or 7.1 analog outputs. Check out the CES 2009 hands on for a better look before these show up at a retailer near you.
