Samsung Captivate is AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S, launching ‘in the coming months’

So much for the “AT&T refuses to release high-end Android devices” conspiracy theory, eh? T-Mobile had been widely pegged as Samsung’s launch partner for the Galaxy S in the States, but AT&T stole its thunder this morning by announcing the Captivate featuring a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.1, 7.2Mbps HSPA, and a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. If it sounds more or less like the European Galaxy S, well, your intuitions are spot-on — AT&T actually describes the Captivate as “a Galaxy S smartphone.” As for media, you can expect a 5 megapixel camera with 720p recording, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and 16GB of onboard storage combined with support for external storage for a total of up to 32GB; you also have 802.11n WiFi and a variety of built-in apps (some of which you’ll want, others you won’t) like Swype and AT&T Navigator. Unfortunately, this is a little while out yet — AT&T is only saying that it’ll launch “in the coming months” for an undisclosed price — but we’re at least stoked that AT&T’s finally fully entrenched in the Android superphone game. Follow the break for the full press release.

AT&T suspends iPhone 4 pre-orders altogether, says they were ten times 3GS’ numbers

AT&T just kicked things up another notch, going from a launch day pre-order sellout for the iPhone 4 to… well, a total pre-order sellout. The carrier has announced this morning that it’s “suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we’ve already received,” saying only that it will resume the pre-order process when it can wrap its brain around the “additional inventory” it’ll have on hand. It’s hard to gauge where this lies on the truth / hype meter, but for what it’s worth, they’re saying that pre-orders outstripped the 3GS by a factor of ten, and eligibility checks were three times higher than the previous one-day record. Or… you know, maybe they just don’t want any more information falling into the wrong hands until they can figure things out. Follow the break for AT&T’s full statement.

AT&T sold out of iPhone 4 pre-orders for launch day

BGR’s reporting that AT&T’s launch day allocation of iPhone 4s is now sold out, and anyone who got in the door after 1:30PM Pacific Time will get their unit some time between June 25 and July 5. Frankly, we have no idea how anyone managed to get a pre-order in, let alone enough to sell out — but everyone who did deserves a pat on the back and a high-five.

Update: We’ve gotten the official statement from AT&T, and it’s true, though you still might be able to waltz in on launch day without a pre-order and pick up one of the unallocated units:

“Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24.”

Samsung executive confirms: Galaxy Tab tablet coming by Q3

We had more than a hunch that Samsung was toiling away on a tablet of some sort, and while we’d been loosely referring to its as the S-Pad and Tab, it looks as if the latter moniker is the one that’ll stick. J.K. Shin, president of Samsung’s mobile communications division, recently affirmed as much during a sit-down with the Wall Street Journal, stating the following:

“I can also say that we are planning to launch a tablet computer, named Galaxy Tab, no later than in the third quarter of this year.”

He didn’t elaborate beyond that, so we’re still on pins and needles waiting to find out if it’ll run Windows 7, Bada or BeOS, but we ought to know much, much more in just a few months. An IFA debut, perhaps?

Motorola, Verizon announcing ‘next generation of Droid’ on June 23

We don’t know whether this is going to be the Droid 2, the Droid X, or both, but Motorola, Google, Verizon, and Adobe — yes, Adobe — are all getting on stage out in New York on the 23rd of the month to announce some new Android gear. Should be exciting, so keep it locked — because naturally, we’ll be on-hand for all the festivities.

PlayStation Plus announced at E3: $50 / year

And here it is! PlayStation Plus has been announced. As we suspected, the PlayStation Network itself will not change, while power users can upgrade for $50 a year or $18 for three months. And to sweeten the deal, your first three months are free. And what do you get for your hard earned dough? Tons of premium content, including “hundreds of dollars of products” throughout the year, early access to betas, and Qore. Sony is also indicating that Plus subscribers will be able to send voice messages to other gamers to invite them to play, even if they’ve made the foolish decision to not subscribe to Plus. Naturally, though, they won’t be able to reply in kind unless they too pony up the cash.

Nintendo 3DS in the flesh and hands-on! (updated with video!)

That Nintendo announced the 3DS was not a surprise — that they had a couple-dozen of these things to try out, that was. We elbowed our way to the front of the line to try one out, and the effect is actually not bad. It’s not great, but the 3.5-inch screen on top certainly gives a firm illusion of depth without resorting to glasses — or eye crossing. The feel is definitely reminiscent of those 3D cereal box prints, and as soon as you turn the device from left to right to try to look around anything the effect is immediately lost. You need to stare at the screen for a moment for your eyes to adjust and then not move around too much. If you do you’ll need to adjust again. But, stay reasonably still and it’s a compelling effect.

The new analog slider on the left feels a lot like the PSP’s analog nub, but larger and without the texture. It’s a bit easier on the fingers, and comfortable. Overall the device feels just like a current DS or DSi, though we couldn’t get a good feel for the weight thanks to a bulky tether attached on one end to the device, and on the other end to the row of ladies who were surely told to not let the gadgets out of their hands or face certain doom. The only thing we could do here is rotate along a still frame — Pikmin in a field, for example — and play with the 3D slider. It is a pretty convincing effect, but it’s hard to tell at this point if it’s at all compelling — it wasn’t anything more than novelty in this demo, and we still don’t know how it stands up to fast-moving footage. Actual games were promised to us for the show floor, so we’ll hit that up later today. We snagged a few pics before getting elbowed out of the way, so check ’em out!

Nintendo 3DS gets official, includes 3D camera

We’ve been reading about it for what seems like ages, looking over images of the FCC prototype with a magnifying glass, and now Nintendo is showing it off at its E3 press conference. The company that Mario built is trumping up how superior its glasses-free technology is better than others, “a solution that lets you take 3D gaming along with you wherever you go” according to Reggie. The upper screen is surprisingly only 3.5-inches, not the wider that we’d expected. There is a slider on the side that lets you tweak the 3D effect, seemingly enabling you to adjust its depth based on your distance from the screen — or turn it off entirely. As with the current DS, the bottom is a touchscreen, and is not 3D.

That’s what looks to be an analog stick on the side there, as well, that Nintendo is calling a “Slide Pad.” There is a gyro, motion sensor, it’s compatible with DSi games, and has two cameras enabling 3D photos. Nintendo is also talking up partnerships including Disney, games that are said to be playable today, at the show, with one of the highlights being a new Kid Icarus game which looks quite action-packed to say the least — and has better graphics than most of the Wii titles Nintendo has shown thus far. Nintendo has mentioned the 3DS will have the “biggest launch support ever” from third party devs, and a 3D Nintendogs should be a huge seller — if only because it has cats too. Other games include Madden, Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil, a Batman title, Splinter Cell, and, finally, a Metal Gear Solid entry.

Nintendo is also talking about how the system will seek out WiFi hotspots or other 3DS systems “without you knowing,” which sounds a bit ominous, to be honest. Systems can communicate regardless of which games are being played. It can even pull in new DLC directly from other consoles, all without a monthly fee.

Still no release date or price, but Nintendo is showing off two colors, red and blue, and they’re said to be playable on the show floor. You can be sure we’ll be running there right now.

Update: Complete press release and full list of launch games after the break, including some biggies, like Metal Gear Solid “The Naked Sample,” Madden, FIFA, and more!
