Volkswagen Temporary Auto Pilot brings hands-free driving to the highway

Would you feel comfortable driving down the highway with a Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP) behind the wheel of your next Volkswagen? A new technology proposed by the German automaker won’t take you from A to B automatically, but it will help out with more simple driving, so you can take your hands off the wheel while cruising down the highway at up to 130km/h (about 80 mph), for example. The system pairs Lane Assist with cruise control, and can be overridden by the driver at any time. The TAP system’s Pilot Mode uses radar, laser, camera, and ultrasonic sensors to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, start and stop in traffic, and slow down before a bend. Speed is set by the driver, who you’ll need to remain aware of your surroundings in case you need to take over control — so don’t get too comfortable poking around the menus on that AppRadio just yet.

Ford’s V2V tech talks to other cars, may or may not temper road rage (video)

You know we’re headed safely into the future when Ford starts trotting out ‘talking car‘ technology. It’s highly unlikely that your next-gen Taurus will start criticizing your outfit selection anytime soon, but it will alert you to potential unseen collisions. The V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) communication powering this auto evolution differs slightly from existing peer-to-peer tech — wedding GPS with a dedicated WiFi network, these autobots are only five years away from giving K.I.T.T. all sorts of company. Toss in a bit of FCC-channel security, add a dashboard of flashing-red LEDs, and you’re looking at a car that’ll aggressively bleep and bloop you out of harm’s way. Rest easy Big Brother types, Ford says the cars won’t be automagically controlling themselves — you still have to rely on those well-honed ninja reflexes for that.

Tesla Roadster nears the end of its production run, company switches focus to Model S

Well, we knew this day had to come eventually: various sources are reporting that Tesla Motors has announced that production of its Roadster will soon be drawing to a close, a scant three years (and a few months) after initially launching. “I think there’s a handful of cars left to sell in the US,” said CEO Elon Musk. “People in Europe and Japan probably have another six months [while in] the US, it’s maybe a month or two.” We always thought that the company’s approach was pretty gutsy, and maybe that’s exactly what the automotive world needed — a long-range (if expensive) ride that screamed: “this ain’t your parents’ EV.” (Cue guitar solo.) For the time being, the company will be switching its focus to the more subdued Model S sedan, although we won’t be surprised if we see more badass vehicles from these guys in the future. We aren’t sure it’ll help with the tears, but our Roadster Sport 2.5 test drive will (thankfully) live on forever.

Ford SYNC AppLink gets rolling in ten new models, still just three apps deep

Ford SYNC AppLink gets rolling in ten new models, still just three apps deep

Back when we gave Ford’s SYNC AppLink a test drive in that little green Fiesta, we got word that the Mustang was next in line to receive the service. Well, earlier this year, the auto outfit Linked-up the Mustang and now it’s rolling out the application for 10 new 2012 models, including the F-150, Fusion (Hybrid and otherwise), Super Duty, and Expedition. It also says it’s got a slew of developers lining up to bring hands-free control of their apps to AppLink. For now, though, no matter which SYNC-enabled beast you boast, or which OS you’re rocking (BlackBerry OS, iOS, or Android), you’ll be riding dirty with just two linked apps at most. Full PR after the break.

Zipcar Android app sheds the beta, late-night driverless honking to increase

It may have happened to you before — you’re walking down the street somewhere on a balmy summer night when, out of nowhere, the empty car next to you honks its horn and you spit your skeleton right outta that purty mouth. Yeah, you have Zipcar to blame for that. Ever since the introduction of its iOS app back in 2009, users have been able to reserve a car on-the-go, and freak out unwitting pedestrians. Now Android users get to join the party — officially. While the apps’ market availability is nothing new, the recent shucking of its beta tag and some UI enhancements make this coming out party noteworthy. There’s a good reason Time Magazine named it one of the “50 best iPhone Apps in 2011.” Also, wireless honking — in case you forgot.

2012 plug-in Prius to include selectable EV mode, full battery regeneration

We already know to expect Toyota’s Entune infotainment system in the dash of the 2012 Prius, but the hybrid’s monster EV batteries will be powering much more than a touchscreen and apps. According to ConsumerSearch, next year’s plug-in vehicle will include two new features aimed at improving the car’s electric-only range for local driving, especially when your commute also includes a trip down the freeway. The first improvement comes in the form of an EV mode button, allowing you to turn off EV for highway driving, which tends to drain those batts faster than a Thunderbolt in Hotspot mode. The Prius will also offer full battery regeneration, so power-off activities like braking and driving downhill will restore the hybrid’s EV-only range — especially helpful if you live in a hilly area or tend to make frequent stops. Both new features should have a fairly significant impact on efficiency, so you’ll soon be able to drive further in the city without tapping a single drop of crude.

Toshiba SCiB to be used in Mitsubishi i-MiEV, recharge to 80 percent in just 15 minutes

Toshiba’s SCiB (Super Charge Ion Battery) technology has long been the source of great hope and anticipation in electronics circles, but it’s never quite delivered the world-changing retail products that its marketing promised. Hoping to correct that in a big way, the company’s now hooked up with Mitsubishi to distribute said fast-charging cells in the taxman-friendly i-MiEV (to be known as Mitsubishi i in the US) and its taxi variant, the MINICAB-MiEV. How fast-charging, you ask? We’re told recharging will be done in 15 minutes for 80 percent, 10 minutes for 50 percent, and a mere 300 seconds for 25 percent. You’ll need a CHAdeMO charger to achieve such rapid revitalization rates, but those stations are sprouting up across the US now. There are other favorable qualities to Toshiba’s batteries, including “excellent charging and output” under very low temperatures, 2.5 times the number of charge / discharge cycles of regular lithium ion cells, and safer operation than most other alternatives. Check out the full PR after the break.

Japan trying out roadside service vehicles capable of charging EVs, soothing range anxiety

No matter how hard Nissan tries to convince folks that driving an EV won’t leave them stranded on the side of the road gagging for electricity, that pesky range anxiety issue continues to permeate discussions about electric cars. So, what else to do but strap an EV charger on roadside service vehicles? The Japan Automobile Federation is trialing just such a scheme, with a Nissan-built prototype service truck helping to top up electrified transporters that have ended up bereft of juice at an inopportune moment. The trial’s gotten its start in Kanagawa Prefecture this week, which, incidentally, happens to be using a Nissan Leaf as its governor’s official car. So, even if you do figure out a way to use up your Leaf’s entire battery, you get the comfort of knowing you’re riding like a governor and that the good men in orange jumpsuits will be there to take care of your problemo.

Panasonic, AT&T team up for connected cars, rule out extra-long Ethernet cables

High-end automakers like BMW and Audi have already demoed their takes on the “connected car,” and even Intel’s gotten into the game with its safety-first, egg-shaped iteration. Now Panasonic and AT&T have partnered to explore the concept: Panny will provide hardware and integration, and Ma Bell will handle connectivity. All this concept-exploration will take place in Peachtree City, Georgia, and the team’s “connected lifestyle projects” will likely include basic in-car infotainment systems — think streaming music and video, along with social networking apps. But we’re also hoping for some really blue-sky stuff, more like the Mini Cooper’s driving-influenced playlist. After all, it won’t be long before the cars drive themselves, leaving passengers to demand some serious entertainment. Oh, and speaking of entertainment, check out the press release after the break.

Tesla Model S is almost production-ready, does photo shoot to prove it

You’re looking at an unlikely picture: two Tesla EVs on the same street. The Silicon Valley carmaker is hoping to become more mainstream, however, when it releases its Model S sedan next year to complement the exuberantly expensive Roadster 2.5. Tesla has just released photos of the latest, nearly production-ready build of the Model S to whet our appetites. The shots reveal a couple of sleek cosmetic changes to the front bumper and body panels, but mainly we’re just happy to see the S rolling on schedule. Oh yes, and there’s another glimpse of the 17-inch infotainment console, which Auto Evolution now reports will be accompanied by built-in 3G. Sounds dandy, but that $57,400 starting price had better include a data plan. Man, who are we kidding?

[Thanks, Lucian]
