If you caught the latest episode of The Ben Heck Show, then you no doubt saw this era’s modding mastermind piece together a PS3 console suitable for use in the wilds of Afghanistan. The military-grade portable gaming system was designed and built for a couple working with the military overseas, and it’s Pelican’s iM2600 Store Case there on the outside keeping things safe and secure from flying shrapnel. As Ben always does, he managed to carefully place an entire PS3 console deep within the confines of the enclosure, and he even threw in an integrated LCD into the lid to prevent any additional external hookups. Generator equals gametime, as they say. Head on past the break for the latest episode, which shows the play-by-play on how it was constructed.
Update: Turns out the folks that Ben built this case for are now taking matters into their own hands. Currently based in Afghanistan, Erica and Kris have founded Rugged Outdoor Gaming Units, Etc (R.O.G.U.E.) in order to build and sell similar hardcore gaming enclosures, or PeliStations. They’re aiming for an early spring release, and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on them.

Case-maker Powis just announced that its iPad Cover, the Powis iCase, is available in two new designs: Tan Pebble Leather and Antique Book. A stylish case, its looks are inspired by those of antique books. It keeps your iPad slim and portable, while delivering sturdy protection. It also functions as a stand offering several flexible positions, and it’s available in over 40 patterns and designs. The cases can also be personalized with a name, inscription, favorite quote, or personal message on the inside cover. Powis can also print company logos.
Listen up last-minute shoppers, because Powis wants your business. It’s offering a buy one, get one 50 percent off deal. This promotion will run through December 21, with shipping options to deliver your case by December 25. Case prices range form $49.95 for a patterned case to $79.95 for a premium leather model.
It’s not often you hear of a case causing technical problems with an electronic device, but that’s just what a number users have been saying about Amazon’s own Kindle Leather Cover. Apparently, the problem stems from the metal hooks used in the case — they’re designed to conduct electricity in the lighted version of the case, but in the non-lighted version they’re reportedly causing Kindles to freeze or reboot. While the company hasn’t officially confirmed the problem, Amazon has told PC Magazine that its engineering team is looking into the issue, and that it will offer a refund or replacement to anyone experiencing a problem with the case, no matter when it was purchased. Those looking to take Amazon up on that offer can email kindle-response@amazon.com.

Whoa, Nelly! ThinkFlood won’t like this… not one bit. If you’ll recall, the RedEye universal remote dongle was well received, as a simple 3.5mm adapter added IR beaming to Apple’s slate of iDevices. But now, Mashed Pixel has taken the integration one step further, seamlessly embedding an Infrared emitter into a case. Simply pop the Surc around your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, download the (free) accompanying app and start programming. Before long, you’ll be dictating your home entertainment setup sans any external accessories, and heck, you may even improve your phone’s reception all the while. The only downside to this approach compared to ThinkFlood’s is that the iPad is obviously not supported, and once you upgrade to the iPhone 5, your trusty IR case becomes a glorified paperweight. If you’re kosher with that, though, you can get your pre-order in now for $69.95, with initial shipments expected to make their way out in Q1 2011.

Our quest for the perfect iPhone 4 battery case continues apace with the Exolife Exogear presently holding the lead, slightly ahead of the Mophie Juice Pack Air and the Mili PowerSpring. Just like these fine selections, the Aigo aiPower i616 claims to “virtually double” battery life, but it’s got another trick up its sleeve: a hidden USB ribbon cable for both charging and data built right into the case. Should you want for a longer sync cable than it provides on its own, there’s also a second microUSB port built into the left side, as well as a switch for the external 1500mAh battery and a handy button to display its current level of charge. Not bad for a pleasantly comparable 125.8 x 62.6 x 17.25mm, nor the $80 asking price.
If you’re looking for something a little more svelte, however, the $60 InCase Snap Battery might be more to your liking — it adds a 900mAh battery in a soft-touch frame that InCase claims is the slimmest around. We can’t say it looks like it offers much protection, only covering the corners and rear of the phone, but fashion has long been a harsh mistress to those who obey her siren call.

Clumsy HTC Evo owners, you don’t need to worry any longer. Now you can wrap your smartphone in five layers of protection with the Ballistic HD. The case is now available for the HTC Evo for a list price of $49.99. What do you get for that steep amount? Layer 1 is a screen protector, layer 2 a shock-absorbent polymer, and layer 3 an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell. Moving outward, layer 4 is a second shock-absorbing polymer and layer 5 a soft silicone outer.
There’s more going on with this case, however, than just extreme protection. It also includes a video stand, a rotating belt clip, and it’s made of water-resistant materials. You can find it in black/black, black/red, and black/gray. To see how tough it is, watch the drop test video. It’ll make you a believer.
Looks like some Chinese manufacturers think they know what the next-generation iPad looks like — we’ve seen numerous pictures today of supposed cases all with the same features: a headphone jack, a hole for a camera on the back, just one dock connector (not two), and a mysterious slit on the bottom. So, what could that be? An SD card slot seems unlikely since the cutout predominantly strips away the back of the case, not the bottom edge. Our source speculates it might be the antenna — if all the manufacturers saw was the aluminum case design, the cutaway could’ve been made as a precaution, not knowing exactly what it’s for. (Then again, the antenna for iPad 3G is found on the top of the device). We’re thinking it might be for a revised speaker design — the cutout is located just above and behind the location of the current iPad’s speaker. Maybe we’ll find out for ourselves by April, and maybe we won’t — consult your own crystal ball for that one. Some more case designs in a video after the break.

Ever heard of Ona? Up until last week, we hadn’t either. Turns out, Ona’s a purveyor of “fine” camera bags and accessories, and given that it’s the holiday season, we figured it prudent to have a gander at the outfit’s latest and greatest — you know, just in case you’ve a camera lover in your family who you’ve yet to buy for. The all-new Union Street ($279) is quite clearly an upscale messenger bag on the outside, but the internals are arranged in a way that the amateur photog / gadget lover would appreciate. There’s room for a few pens (of the lens and / or ink variety), a smartphone, a navigation system, a 15-inch (or smaller) laptop and — according to Ona — a DSLR along with three lenses. The other notable aspect is the waxed canvas exterior (dubbed Waxwear), which is generally more rugged and weather resistant than your average patch of suede or leather. How’s it all shake out? Join us after the break for our pair of pennies.
