MSI Butterfly and Angelow all-in-one PC concepts, eyes-on

MSI’s new tablets felt like prototypes, but the device pictured above is truly far out — it’s the MSI Butterfly, one of several whimsical concepts the company teased about a week ago. We actually ducked into MSI’s booth right before it covered the whole display with a giant plexiglass box and got some reasonable snapshots, but nothing remotely resembling a proper hands-on, so you’ll have to make do with the gallery below and whatever dreams may come.

LG 3D smartphone display eyes-on (video)

You can’t have all this 3D stuff happening on the home entertainment front without it trickling down to smartphones, right? Sharp’s already planning to bring its autostereoscopic wares to US shores at some point during 2011 and today LG’s busy showing off a prototype of its own, right here at CES. It’s a 4.3-inch panel, pumping out glasses-free 3D (using the parallax barrier method) and is presently embedded in an enormous demo box, but the ultimate goal is to have it in media-centric handsets. To be honest, yes, there’s some glasses-free 3D effect going on, but for the most part we just noticed the two frames splitting and didn’t find the video before us enhanced in any major way. The best parts might even have been the ones that didn’t have any 3D-ification applied to them — the display on show is certainly a lucid and bright one. Skip past the break to see what we’re talking about.

Razer Switchblade preview: 3G, Intel Oak Trail, almost definitely going on sale

Whoa, Nelly! We just made a beeline to Razer’s booth here on the CES show floor, and were presented with a fairly technical talk surrounding the newly launched Switchblade. While officially deemed a concept, we came away with a serious impression that Razer’s not investing loads of time and money on this just for kicks. In other words, we’d cautiously expect to see this thing on sale at some point next year — but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. We spent a good half-hour toying with this Windows 7-based mini netbook, and we came away seriously impressed by what’s happening here. Head on past the break for more of our impressions.

Razer Switchblade: 7-inch pocket gaming concept blows our minds six ways from Sunday

The most beautiful thing to come out of CES 2011? The show ain’t over yet, but we’re unafraid to say that Razer‘s Switchblade is the device to beat. Before you go getting your hopes up, we have to (regretfully) point out that this here gaming handheld is but a concept, but considering that Toshiba’s Libretto W105 made it to store shelves (if but for a moment), we’re hoping and praying that the Switchblade can also find its way to a production line. Little is known about the device itself, but Razer has imagined it using a pair of 7-inch multitouch displays as well as a layer of tactile, dynamic keys on the lower screen. Much like the Optimus Maximus of yesteryear, this keyboard would enable gamers to place different screens underneath depending on title, and even within a game, you could imagine the keys shifting to account for different POVs, levels, scenarios, etc. Internally, the concept is based around an Intel Atom processor, but there’s no word on what kind of GPU would work alongside of it. Sadly, Razer’s unwilling to talk pie-in-the-sky details when it comes to price and release, but if four million comments show up below begging and pleading for the company to take this commercial…

Update: Just to be clear, the keyboard on the bottom is a full-on LCD , but covered with physical keys. In contrast, the W105 had a flat touchpanel on the bottom.

Thimble concept translates real-world input into real-time Braille (video)

From the great tomorrowland of concept videos comes yet another potentially life-changing product: a thimble (looks more like a one-finger glove to us) that takes ambient input and relays it in via an electro-tactile grid to the wearer’s finger in Braille. It gets text input from an embedded camera, like in the picture above, or pulls RSS feeds, books, or presumably any other text via a Bluetooth-paired smartphone. We are, of course, addicted to the flow of info our mobile devices feed us throughout the day, and this little guy seems like the perfect tool to bring that flow more easily to the visually impaired. Now, venture capitalists, work your magic — we’ll be expecting to see this thing on shelves just in time for holidays season 2012. Video after the jump.

Porsche promises to unveil ‘new model’ in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?

Porsche promises to unveil 'new model' in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?

Maybe this is wishful thinking and maybe we’re optimists, but maybe, just maybe, Porsche could be ready to unveil to the world the final version of its supremely hot hybrid. We already know the company has given the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid a green light for a run down assembly lines, a legitimate supercar with a 700+ horsepower on tap despite achieving near 80mpg. But, we don’t know the when nor the all-important how much. With Porsche promising to give “a new model its world debut” at the North American International Auto Show we can’t help but hope that this is it. Want to be the first to find out? When the time comes you can watch the unveil yourself, live streamed at www.porsche.com/detroit.

Update: Marco wrote in to let us know the spoil-sports at Autobild are indicating this will be just the relatively plain 918, neither a spyder nor a hybrid. We’ll just have to wait a few weeks to see.

Toyota looks set to launch two new Prius models in Detroit, one’s a mystery

Toyota looks set to launch two new Prius models in Detroit, one's a mystery

It’s a sure-fire bet that Toyota will unveil its upright Prius MPV at the North American International Auto Show in a couple of weeks, a rather more roomy and practical version of the hybrid that really started it all. And, of course, the plug-in model we tested in October will be surely rocking the floor. Now we’re hearing that another as of yet unreleased Prius will be on display, simply referred to as a “Prius concept vehicle.” Concept cars of course range from the mundane to the insane, and knowing Toyota we’re guessing this one will fall squarely into the former category. Just the same we’re hoping for a tire-shredding, slalom-eating, RWD hybrid Prius Supra model. We’ll be there in Detroit when the unveil happens and we’ll be sure to bring some tissues to wipe away our tears of disappointment.

Xerox shows off Smart Document Review table, a Surface that sifts through billions of docs (video)

Xerox shows off Smart Document Review table, a Surface that sifts through billions of docs (video)

You have a lot of documents you’ve acquired over the years, hundreds or thousands in some semblance of order thanks to folders and whatnot. Now, imagine taking the output from hundreds or thousands of others, all with their own ideas about organization, and finding only those pages relevant to a certain topic. That’s what legal aides have to do in cases where a major corporation is being investigated, and we’re thinking that’s a major target market for Xerox‘s Smart Document Review. It’s a prototype touchscreen table that enables users to collaboratively filter documents, starting by indexing a giant pool and then allowing for the creation of “magnets” that contain keywords or other heuristics and dynamically pull out matches, all happening courtesy of animations that look only slightly less sophisticated than those seen in Hackers. Search results can then be dumped to a thumb drive. The prototype table dates back to earlier this year, but Xerox is now making them available as part of a pilot program exclusively for trendy law offices with unisex bathrooms.

[Thanks, Pradeep]

Samsung Ucim digicam concept saves shots to three USB sticks

So, let’s say you’re out with a bud. Two buds. Just you three, hanging out, talking up memories of the days when you all kept in touch via the Kin Spot. And then, a monument. Any monument will do. You bust out a point and shoot, scrunch together, and snap a picture. Fast forward to next week, and your buds are still wondering when you’re ever going to offload those images and shoot ’em over via email. You’ve not only let down the two most important people in your life, but you’ve failed yourself. Enter Samsung’s Ucim camera, which sports a full trio of USB ports meant to house three USB memory nubs. When the shutter snaps, it logs images to all three nubs, and when the party’s over, you and your two buds grab your respective nubs and part ways. Too bad it’s just a concept for now, but here’s hoping it becomes much more than that in the near future. Your buds hope so, too.
