Rolls Royce unveils 102EX, the all-electric Phantom (video)

The word “experimental” isn’t something you’d often apply to a Rolls Royce, a company with a history that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and clientele that isn’t much younger. However, it does have a history of producing so-called EX cars, experimental models, and the 102EX is the latest — and the most daring. It’s the world’s first fully-electric ultra-luxury car, featuring a hulking 71kWh battery (almost three times the capacity of the Nissan Leaf) that can be charged in as quickly as eight hours. Inductive charging is also available, like the wireless Tesla Roadster we saw at CES, though Rolls isn’t saying how long that takes. Range is said to be up to 200km, about 125 miles, and the 0 – 60 roll takes somewhere under eight seconds. That’s not bad for a 6,000lb monster. No estimated cost has yet been applied, nor any real intent for production, but if this does start easing off production lines we hope it does so without the tacky glowing hood ornament. The Spirit of Ecstasy looks best when shined by polish, not LEDs.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was delayed into 2011… by ‘virtual engine sound’ system

Remember how at the end of last year the US legislature decided to make it mandatory for EVs to churn out an audible noise while in motion? It was all in the name of saving pesky pedestrians from getting in the way of your gliding electro-car, but the new law itself has managed to create a bump in the road for at least one company. Hyundai’s Sonata Hybrid was all set to launch in late 2010, equipped with a “virtual engine sound” system that the user could toggle on and off, however the government’s request that it be kept permanently on required modifications to the vehicle’s wiring harnesses, UI software and user manuals, delaying its debut into late January. These tweaks had to be done “amazingly late in the process,” according to Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik, but the delay will at least ensure that all of Hyundai’s Sonatas will sound the same. Which is something, we guess.

Fisker Karma enters production on March 21st, our future shortly thereafter

It’s been a long road for the Karma to reach production, but now it finally has an end in sight: March 21st. That’s the date Fisker promises to start rolling its gorgeous PHEV off assembly lines, with deliveries to the first humans to reserve one coming up in April. The price for the 2012 Karma remains a mighty $95,900, though if you ask our brethren over at Autoblog, that’s a bunch of pennies well spent. Fisker expects to start producing 1,500 Karmas per month starting in October and to then sell 15,000 a year from 2012 onwards.

Renault’s Zoe EV to give Nissan Leaf competition at lower price — Nissan-Renault alliance forges on

Ever since they struck an alliance back in 1999, Renault and Nissan have been super tight, sharing both a CEO and a goal to make EVs more accessible, but with Renault’s Zoe gearing up to hit the market in 2012, the French automaker has proven it’s not pulling any punches when it comes to competing with its Japanese partner. In fact, reports give Renault’s EV a starting price of roughly €15,000, which compared to the Leaf’s €27,000 price tag, is a pretty hefty difference. The catch — of course, there’s a catch — is Zoe owners will have to lease their batteries for about €100 a month. With the added battery expense, however, it would still take nearly 10 years for the Zoe to meet the Leaf’s price. We hope this doesn’t put a damper on this 12-year love affair, but honestly, we’ll take an affordable EV any way we can get it.

Antistatic E-3POD concept wins Citroen design award, job for its student creator

Who says dreaming doesn’t pay? A young designer by the name of Heikki Juvonen recently won himself a six-month job placement at Citroen’s PSA Design Centre in Paris after producing the most compelling response to the company’s Double Challenge set to students at London’s Royal College of Art. The premise was simple — put together an aesthetic for an ultra-compact urban vehicle that Citroen could call its own, and judging by the imagery above, we can all probably agree that Heikki achieved a very distinctive look with his E-3POD. We’re not yet certain how we feel about being inside the largest of the three wheels for the duration of our electrically powered journeys, but the young gent has half a year on his hands to tweak and refine his eye-catching design. We’ll be ready to test-drive the prototype as soon as Citroen becomes mad enough to build one.

Rolls-Royce electrifies Phantom sedan, tests the waters of luxury (video)

If you have the money to consider owning a Rolls, we doubt you’re worried about gasoline, but that hasn’t stopped the manufacturer from finally electrifying its Spirit of Ecstasy. Two years after teasing a fully-electric Phantom, Rolls-Royce has built the car for real, a one-off prototype it’s dubbed the 102EX, or Phantom Experimental Electric. You won’t be able to buy one, though, no matter your estate, as rather than produce the vehicle Rolls is taking it on a world tour to gauge the reaction of the luxury automobile community. First stop: the Geneva Motor Show on March 1st, where the company will reveal the vehicle’s full technical specs. BMW puts a range-extending ICE in its Megacity EV, provides tonic for your range anxiety

When we first left the safe confines of our parents’ home, many of us experienced separation anxiety. As we grow older, we suffer from disconnection anxiety — and no, iPhone owners, that doesn’t refer to your fear of dropped calls. Now, BMW is combating our range anxiety, or fear of being stranded when your car’s batteries run out of juice, by putting an internal combustion range extender in its Megacity EV. BMW is taking a page out of the Chevy Volt’s playbook by placing a small ICE in its EV that doubles the range of the vehicle from 50 to 100 miles — all in an effort to assuage the (irrational?) fears of its potential US customers. The gasoline generator will be an option for those who wish to venture beyond the city limits, so if you want to keep it totally green you can still do so. Our Bavarian friends won’t be bringing the Megacity to market until 2013, so that should give you enough time to decide if you want to hasten the death of the ICE or prolong its life a bit longer.

Land Rover develops Range_e hybrid, will show it off at the Geneva Motor Show

You know electric cars are in the ascendancy when even the fearsome 4x4s start looking to add an extra little spark to their energy production and storage. Land Rover has just announced it’ll demo one — there are multiple working versions — of its development prototypes at the Geneva Motor Show next month, treating us to an exhibition of what a diesel engine can do when augmented with some electric firepower. The Range_e’s design is based on the Range Rover Sport and its 3.0-liter TDV6 core, however the new vehicle is capable of going a full 20 miles purely on its electric charge and touts a whopping 690-mile range altogether. Let’s hope Geneva shows enough interest in the Range_e to compel Land Rover to turn it into a commercial reality.

Rinspeed BamBoo electric concept is world’s largest HTC Flyer dock

Talk about your cross promotions. The Rinderknecht-built Rinspeed BamBoo concept electric car looks to be the stuff of a gadget nerd’s dreams. Unfortunately, that dream resembles a dystopian nightmare envisioned by a Neal Stephenson novel whereby everything we own is sponsored, trivial, and slathered in corporate logos. But hey, it’s just a concept, and production vehicles never look like the original idea so anything goes… and we mean anything. To start with, the breadbox-inspired dash features a Siemens VDO display with a docking station in the glovebox for the new HTC Flyer tablet. The BamBoo dash is flanked by flowery JBL GreenEdge speakers and the starter key is styled after a Swiss army knife. And if we’re not mistaken, there’s a webcam extended off a stalk from the center of the dash. An interesting piece of work right on down to the cluster of old school throw switches for the wipers, lights, hazards, etc. But that’s just the cockpit.

The radiator grill has been replaced by an internet-connected “identiface,” developed by Daimler subsidiary MBtech, whereby the occupant can display any number of messages to onlookers from Facebook or Twitter, for example, or even the radio station preset you’re currently jamming. The inflatable rear seats are removable as is the inflatable waterproof roof developed by Tecnotex that doubles as a beach blanket. The whole kit is powered by a 54 kW electric motor capable of a 120km/h top speed and battery capable of pushing the sporty golf cart some 105 kilometers before requiring a recharge from an RWE intelligent charging station. Toyota to show off iQ EV prototype, put it into production next year

Toyota has been showing off an electric vehicle concept based on its iQ ultra-compact for a couple of years now, but it looks like it’s finally worked up enough confidence to actually put it into production. The first step down that road will occur at the Geneva Motor Show next month, where Toyota will show off a “near-production” prototype of its iQ EV (not necessarily the actual name), which is apparently much like its FT-EV concept, but with an improved lithium-ion battery pack that promises a range of 105 kilometers (or 65 miles) on a single charge. Assuming all goes as planned, the car will then be put into production following some additional testing later this year, and Toyota will reportedly begin leasing it to consumers at some point in 2012 — Europe seems to be first in line for the car, but it will apparently be headed to North America as well.
