We won some Webby Awards, and now you can win a BlackBerry PlayBook!

It’s happened again, we’ve won a Webby. More than one, even! Last year you voted your hearts out and awarded us the People’s Voice award for Consumer Electronics. This year you did it again, but you also made us proud by awarding us a People’s Voice award in Online Film & Video for, what else, the Engadget Show. We also scored the official Webby in Consumer Electronics (voted on by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences), which we’re of course thrilled about, but we’re most honored that you voted for us.

So, we’re going to throw a little love right back at ya. With BlackBerry World going on RIM has graciously given us another PlayBook to give away to you. To win it all you need to do is comment. The full instructions and typical rules can be found after the break, which you should definitely read before you file that comment. Good luck!

Commenting on Engadget: a refresher, and how you can help

Commenting on Engadget: a reminder, and how you can help

It’s been a little while since we took the time to remind you folks how comments work here — not that long in human years but, since we’ve had some changes since then, we thought it was time for a reminder. After the break you’ll find our “human’s guide” to commenting, a sort of care and feeding guide for your Disqus account. If you’ve been here for awhile (hello, you) it should be mighty familiar but, since the flow of the commenters has hugely increased lately, we’re going to be more strict for awhile, deleting any comments we deem to be trollin’ or hatin’ and banning repeat offenders. We don’t like banning people, and we realize that haters do have to hate, but we love encouraging active and open debate down there. This is the best way for us to do that.

Of course, to keep things on track we need help, and while a few, proud comment moderators have been doing us service for months now it’s time to invite a few more into the fold. Click on through and, at the bottom, you’ll see how to apply.

The Engadget Podcast returns… tomorrow at 5PM ET!

The Engadget Podcast. What is it? Is it a living, breathing thing? Is it something that has to be seen to be believed? Is it more than just an hour-long stream of aural intensity, finely hewn and focused on the world of consumer electronics? It’s a mystery that even The Most Interesting Man in the World is having trouble solving, but we’re going to assume things will get a lot clearer when it returns to your regularly scheduled programming block tomorrow evening. Newly appointed Editor-in-Chief Tim Stevens and the perpetually lost Darren Murph will be your guides to somewhere, tomorrow joined by two special guests from the Engadget Mobile podcast team: international man of mystery Vlad Savov and mobile debutante Myriam Joire. It’s a foursome that’ll almost definitely make your workday woes vanish into thin air. Tomorrow. Here. 5PM ET… ish.

Hello, again

An unfamiliar face I’m not, but you’ll be hearing a lot more from myself and Mr. Tim Stevens in the months to come. I’ve been around these parts since the summer of 2006 — barely two years after the site launched — when I (unknowingly) began a march to writing more professional blog posts than anyone else in the world. I have to credit Ryan Block and Peter Rojas for showing me the ropes (and Josh Topolsky for everything else), and I’m elated to admit that I’ve been here long enough to witness every Editor transition that Engadget has seen. To say I’m humbled to be in a position to take over the reins as Managing Editor would be a tremendous understatement; this brand is iconic not because of tricky advertising or dumb luck, but only due to the sleepless nights and incredible determination of the individuals that work here.

We’ve got a lot of moving parts right now, but there are two things that won’t ever change: our dedication to our craft, and our insistence on delivering the best in breaking news within the consumer electronics space. I’d ask that you not take my word for it, and rather look to these very pages to see that vow borne out. You should expect a lot of new and exciting things from us in the future — things like a renewed focus on tightening the integration with our mobile applications, more frequent reader meetups, zany new Engadget Show segments from across the tech universe, and expanded live event coverage. The foundation that Engadget was built upon (and that was drilled into me at an early age) remains firmly in place, and there’s a stellar senior staff here intently focused on keeping it that way.

If you haven’t managed to pick up on anything from my last half-decade here, you can dig into a bit of backstory with my Growing up Geek piece, raise your stalker status one higher by visiting my About.me / Tumblr pages, and complete the holy trinity of digital friendship by following me on Twitter. Let’s keep in touch, cool?

P.S. – That’s me celebrating a meal at Taipei’s Windows 7-themed restaurant, and yes, I drink from that glass daily.

Welcome to Engadget

Hello, and welcome to Engadget. I’ll be your new host, Tim Stevens, taking over as Editor-in-Chief and leading you through this wonderful land of technology and innovation… maybe checking out a couple of KIRFs on the way, too. Though our site isn’t changing I wanted to introduce myself because, well, we’re going to be spending a lot of time together, you and I. So come on in, let’s get to know each other.

The Engadget Show with HP’s Jon Rubinstein tonight!

Attention humans, just a friendly reminder that the Engadget Show is taping tonight at 7:00pm with HP’s Jon Rubinstein at The Times Center in New York City! Joshua Topolsky will be sitting down the former Palm CEO (current HP Senior VP) to get the inside scoop on everything from the TouchPad, new Pre 3, Veer, the state of WebOS, and much more! What’s more, our very own Joanna Stern will be demoing the Samsung 9 Series laptop, we’ll have the Nintendo 3DS on stage for a live demo, and special guests Nilay Patel and Paul Miller will be joining the roundtable! We’ll also have the usual slew of insane giveaways (someone will be walking away with a brand new HP Envy 14 notebook) and rocking chiptunes music from Minusbaby with visuals from The C-Men, as well as some more surprises! Remember, giveaways happen at the live show only, so make the trek and join us at The Times Center in person! We’ll also be streaming the show right here on Engadget, so stay tuned!

The Engadget Show is sponsored by Sprint, and will take place at the Times Center, part of The New York Times Building in the heart of New York City at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues (see map after the break). If you want to join us tonight, tickets are — as always — free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be first come, first served… so get there early!

  • There is no admission fee — tickets are completely free
  • The event is all ages
  • Ticketing will begin at the Times Center at 2:00PM on Friday, March 25th, doors will open for seating at 6:15PM, and the show begins at 7:00PM
  • We now have assigned seating, so the first people to get their tickets — and the Sprint text-to-win winners (you’ll know you’ve won by a text message) — will get priority seating. This also means that once you get a ticket, your seat is guaranteed — you won’t have to get back in line to get a good seat.
  • Ticketing will continue until all tickets are given away
  • You cannot collect tickets for friends or family — anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket
  • Seating capacity in the Times Center is about 340, and once we’re full, we’re full
  • The venue is located at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues in New York City (map after the break)
  • The show length is around an hour

Want to write for Engadget? We’re hiring mobile, classic, European and reviews editors!

Oh sure, you love gadgets — but do you have the chops to write about them? We’d love to know if you think you do, because we’re looking to actually pay humans to do this stuff. Professional writing experience isn’t necessary (though it doesn’t hurt), but what we really care about is that you can write skillfully about gadgets with wit, concision, and authority. And being obsessed with Engadget is good, too. So here’s what we’re after:

  • Senior mobile editor – Full-time (salary or freelance), must be based in New York City (or nearby).
  • HD / classic editor – Part or full-time (freelance), must be based in New York City (or nearby).
  • Reviews editor (laptops, mobiles, etc.) – Full-time (freelance), must be based in New York City or the San Francisco area.
  • European editor – Full-time, preferably based in London (or nearby).

Want to apply? Read on.

Engadget reader meetup tonight in San Francisco at 6:30PM PST! Win a limited edition gold Xoom!

That’s right human beings — it’s happening again! The Engadget crew is getting together their best party outfits and shipping out west for another installment of our fabulous reader meetups. Our last event in NYC drew loads of people and was an all around blast, and the San Francisco installment is sure to be just as explosive (or maybe more? c’mon… show us what you’ve got). This time around we’re partnering with Sprint, as well as Sony PlayStation, Motorola, HP, Roku, Samsung, VUDU, RIM, Sling, Sonos, HTC, Corning, Sphero, OnLive, Plantronics, Snapstick, and more to bring you a night of gadget geeking, delicious foodstuffs, and some awesome music (provided by none other than our podcast producer, Trent Wolbe). Also, a whole mess of the Engadget editors will be on hand to entertain and inform, so if you have any pressing questions — jot them down! Oh, and don’t forget to include the hashtag #EngadgetSF in your tweets!

And did we mention there will be tons of serious giveaways for people in attendance? Because there will be. You seriously don’t want to sleep on this. For instance, one lucky attendee to the event will walk away with a super limited edition gold Xoom (being gifted to this year’s Oscar nominees). Check out an image and info after the break!

The all ages shindig will take place tonight, February 25 at City View at The Metreon, which is located conveniently in downtown SF. If you’re a nerd in the city, you most likely already know what we’re talking about. The doors will open at 6:30PM, and capacity is limited to 1200 people — so if you want to get inside, get there early!

Update: A quick update on where to go — the line is forming at 4th Street and Mission. Yes, there will be a line, but word is Sonos has brought a taco truck! Yes, free tacos starting at 3pm! [Scratch that, taco-palooza begins at 4:30!]
