We’ve seen it before, but not against one of its chief rivals: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Now here they are, sharing a little table space — but not getting along too well. On one hand the Tab 10.1 is thin and light on its feet. On the other, the ThinkPad Tablet is large and would very much like to be in charge of your corporate lifestyle. Due to Honeycomb’s limited customizations, Lenovo’s tackling this angle thanks in large part to some enterprise- and stylus-friendly software, much of which the device comes with pre-installed. ERPLY’s mobile credit card reader handles NFC payments on an iPad, obliterates the check-out line

It may look like nothing more than a glorified chip clip, but that dongle at the bottom of this guy’s iPad is actually ERPLY’s new credit card reader — the latest addition to a growing field of NFC and mobile payment devices designed for small and large businesses. Once attached to an iPad’s charging port, the peripheral will send a user’s encrypted credit card information to ERPLY’s point-of-sale and inventory management software, allowing customers to purchase products on the store room floor and giving retailers the ability to monitor transactions and stock flows in real time. Available for $50 (with a transaction fee of 1.9 percent), the reader is also equipped to handle both NFC and traditional card payments and, after processing a purchase, will automatically send a receipt to consumers via text or e-mail. At the moment, it’s only available for the iPad, though iPhone users should be able to get their own version within the next three months. Ready to revamp your company’s computer systems once the summer’s heat is a mere memory? Come this October, Lenovo’s letting loose its 20-inch ThinkCentre M71z all-in-one desktop, priced starting at just $599 to keep those expense reports low and your interest piqued. Better yet, you’ll be able to deck it out if you’re ready to rack up some points on the company credit card. Around the outside, you’ll find six USB ports and a DisplayPort connection, but it can also be equipped with a multi-touch screen as well as a two megapixel webcam — fantastic for those 10-way Skype or Google+ meetings. BlackBerry Colt may be RIM’s first QNX smartphone, will lack BES support out-of-box?

To many, a colt is a representation of rebirth and a symbol for youthfulness. Research in Motion appears to be in desperate need for exactly that — a regeneration. It seems appropriate, then, that RIM may be launching the BlackBerry Colt, its first QNX-based “superphone,” in the first quarter of 2012. This timeline will ensure the device launches at the expected time, according to rumors by BGR, but there’s likely to be a few compromises to ensure it gets pushed out to market faster. The Colt is said to be undergoing internal testing with a single-core chip, contrary to promises of including dual-core CPUs. Additionally, the maiden voyage of the smartphone platform may be completely devoid of BES at the device’s launch; it’s taken longer than expected to rewrite the proper code to support QNX, and more time’s necessary to bring it up to par with RIM’s standards. What would the Enterprise customers do in the meantime? The alternative to BES is almost unthinkable: Exchange emails would be accessed by a preloaded version of Microsoft ActiveSync. Will the gamble yield greater returns in the long run, or will it remove the glue that still holds the company together?

OCZ’s Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSD offers 2,800MB/sec, 500,000 IOPS, plenty of thrills

Hard to believe that we spotted OCZ Technology’s original Z-Drive at CeBIT 2009. Just over two full years have passed, and already we’ve seen the 600MB/sec claims offered on that fellow eclipsed by a few successors. Today, the latest in the line is making its debut, with the Z-Drive R4 offering 2,800MB/sec and over 500,000 IOPS with a single SuperScale controller; step up to a dualie, and you’ll see 5,600MB/sec transfer rates coupled with 1.2 million input-output operations per second. Not surprisingly, this guy’s aimed squarely at enterprise users — folks who can genuinely take advantage of the speed, and are willing to pay the unpublished rates (yeah, we asked!) that go along with it. It’s retaining the PCIe-based form factor, and will be shipped in two standard configurations: a half height version designed for space constrained 1U servers and multi-node rackmount servers, and a full height version. Each of those will be made available with SLC / MLC NAND flash memory, and as with all of OCZ’s enterprise kit, customer-specific configurations and functionality are available upon request. Motorola Solutions hits $2.1 billion in sales for Q2

All said, Q2 wasn’t such a bad one for the black logoed Motorola Solutions, with sales of $2.1 billion, up six percent from this time last year. That number includes $1.3 billion for government sales and $747 million for enterprise, up four and 11 percent over last year, respectively. Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI to its friends) was formed earlier this year, when the tech company split in two. Solutions specializes in things like barcode scanners and two-way radios, while Motorola Mobility Holdings deals with the more familiar (to us, at least) smartphone and Xoom-y side of things.

Apple tops Android in enterprise; little green robot still gunning for corner office

BlackBerry used to rule the boardroom, but over the past few years we’ve seen a steady uptick in the number of enterprise users switching to their OS of choice. So who’s going to be the successor to the BlackBerry throne? Well, according to Good’s latest report, Apple devices have fast become the preferred companions for its customers, and it looks like the iPad’s leading the way. The enterprise provider shows that in Q2 2011, users activated more iPads than Android smartphones and tablets combined. What’s more, iPads made up 95 percent of tablet activations, with Android tablets taking in only 3.1 percent. Smartphone adoption was a slight bit more balanced, but Apple still came out on top with 66 percent over Android’s 33 percent. That’s all well and good, but what we really want to know is who’s got the stuff to win the three-legged race at the company picnic? Got iOS devices deployed across your enterprise? Listen up. Apple’s just announced the Volume Purchase Program, enabling businesses to procure applications from the US App Store en-masse. Upon registering with Cupertino, corporate overlords can then access a web-form to acquire and sling apps to their plebeian employees at will. And for those needing custom corporate-only software? It looks like bespoke B2B applications — even ones built by third parties — will soon be distributed via the same mechanism. We’re not orchard owners, but them Apples are looking mighty tasty, and it’s past BlackBerry season, right?

Cisco Cius headed to Verizon late summer, IT departments celebrate

Usually the trumpets blare when a new Android-based slate hits the town, but the IT-friendly Cisco Cius isn’t really the type to get all hot and bothered over. We’ve had plenty of signs that this deceptive looking not-a-video-phone was coming to Big Red’s Enterprise accounts and official word from the operator means your side of the cubicle will be getting some locked-down, Angry Birds-less tablet love later this summer. There’s a whole bit of 4G LTE buzz buzz buzz in the release, but we have to stress that it’s mobile hotspot only — meaning this WiFi-equipped pad isn’t the full office-on-the-go you might’ve hoped for.
