Ladies and gentlemen, your PS3 may technically be able to connect to PlayStation Network now, but we’re not through the woods yet — today, Sony is issuing a mandatory System Update (v3.61) which will prepare your game machine for that magical day when the company actually throws the switch. In the meanwhile, Sony says the update will prompt you to change your PlayStation Network password, which will likely rank among the easiest decisions that you’ve ever made.

Update: Sony’s just announced that a “phased restoration” of PlayStation Network and Qriocity is beginning today, and that online gaming, Music Unlimited, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB.TV should rolling out right now in Europe and North America. Update 2: Sony’s got a map of the US up, and will be lighting up individual states — check out our more coverage link to get a rough idea of when you’ll be able to play. The company also says it plans to have PlayStation Network fully functional by the end of May. PR after the break.

Update 3: The restoration is beginning now: we’re seeing Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and California. And would you look at that, the southeast just got its due: Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina have PSN too… and as of 10:18PM PST, you can add Delaware, Pennsylvania, both Virginias, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan to that list.

Update 4: Annnnnd we should all be back. Sleep well, PSN users. By the way, Sony Online Entertainment (the MMO division) has a list of the free goodies you’ll get for your inconvenience — read it at the link below.

Early previews of a new update for the Boxee Box mentioned a couple of different version numbers, but now the company has settled on v1.1 for the software update (sorry, still nothing for PCs) it’s rolling out over the next few days with a slew of new features. VP of Marketing Andrew Kippen confirms the “huge browser update” he’d mentioned earlier is included with the following features: favorites, history, a better UI to show more of the picture and include more options, plus expanded HTML5 capabilities that should fix login problems for HBO Go. There’s no mention of iPad support, but the whole on screen display has been trimmed with a new seek bar for more precise FF/Rewind action, along with support for customized local metadata and NFO files, a new MLB.tv app and two new content partners including the worst TV channel ever and SnagFilms. One thing that’s been removed? Volume controls, which Boxee says “improves consistency” and makes it the same as any standard Blu-ray player. As usual, the update will be issued automatically, but if you just can’t wait you can force it manually, check the source links for details, more screenshots and a full changelog.

If you’re the somewhat-proud-but-feeling-throttled owner of a Motorola Atrix 4G or HTC Inspire 4G, your days of terribly slow uploads are nearly through — following some preliminary tests, AT&T is rolling out updates that provide “increased potential data speed” to both HSPA+ handsets right on cue. The Inspire 4G’s patch will also “make the email set up process much easier,” while the Atrix 4G will actually get a pair of updates which will allegedly bring better Bluetooth headset compatibility, fingerprint reader performance and battery life (which is always a plus) as well as the questionable utility of turning the Atrix into an EDGE hotspot, and a bump to Android 2.2.2 to hopefully fix any lingering SMS routing bugs. Word of warning though, you’ll need to throw your Atrix up on a WiFi network to obtain these goodies — all the Gs in the world won’t help you.

Seems like Verizon, Motorola and Google are on a bit of a security bent — the latest update for the Motorola Xoom lets you take a far more leisurely tour of the internet’s walled gardens. There’s a WPA-PSK security fix to allow choice users into your mobile hotspot, SSL for secure web browsing, Google’s Widevine DRM for viewing locked online video content and HDCP for piping it to your TV. Of course, there’s no mention of the Xoom feature we’re truly waiting for, but we’ll happily take our Bluetooth mouse support and POP3 email in the meanwhile. Droid-Life reports that this HMJ07B update will start hitting Xooms later today, but Verizon’s still got a month to make good on those LTE promises.

Update: We’re not quite sure what happened, but Droid-Life discovered that Verizon’s update-detailing PDF has been pulled, so it’s probably better to not expect an OTA upgrade later this afternoon.

Rejoice, brothers and sisters, for the Froyo has been delivered! Verizon’s Fascinate was up until today weirdly stuck in its Android 2.1 gear, but the carrier has finally figured out whatever needed figuring out and is currently beaming out an Android 2.2 update over the air to expectant users. Now that we’ve put this long wait behind us, can we maybe jump to 2.3 in a slightly more sprightly fashion, Verizon?
