Free? Yeah, we all like free, but when it comes to streaming music, there’s always a catch. This time it’s a FreePlay “tank,” which lets you stream any of MOG’s 11 million songs from the web without subscription fees — well, at least until that looming gauge hits empty. The system adds a rather unique social media twist, filling tanks to different levels based on virtual interactions. And MOG’s CEO says many users should never hit empty — there are a variety of ways to earn free music, such as “interacting with advertisers in meaningful ways.” Like Spotify, MOG’s ultimate goal is to convert freeloaders to paid subscribers, and forking over $5 (Basic) or $10 (Primo) per month does have its benefits, including hardware integration and mobile access — both of which won’t work with the free version. Now that we have several free streaming options, it ultimately comes down to availability — having access to 11 million tracks could be great, but only if you can play the songs you want to listen to. Finding free fonts isn’t always easy, but in the past UrbanFonts.com was a place I could turn to. They offer over 8,000 free fonts as well as live previews from the entire selection that they have available. The other day, however, I happened to stumble upon an awesome site called FontPark.net that has over 70,000 free fonts (for both commercial and noncommercial use)!

Like most other sites the fonts are broken down into dozens of categories, and as an example the “movies” category includes fonts from popular titles like Back to the Future and Harry Potter. A quick search reveals that they also have brand-related fonts like Coca Cola and Pepsi, but they are spread out across categories making them a bit harder to find. There are also all the typical categories that you’d expect, such as calligraphy, comic, handwritten, modern, and sans serif. In all there are over 80 categories available.

The other thing that you’ll find a bit more unique with FontPark is that they have more than just character-based fonts. They have shapes, signs, and other abnormal style fonts (kinda along the lines of wingdings). If you’re just out to find a slightly more unique font without too much digging you can jump over to the top fonts section on the site to pick from the ones that are the most downloaded.

Not that it particularly needed it, but HP is sweetening the deal for owners of its now defunct TouchPad, offering up six webOS apps for the price of free. The pack includes apps normally ranging in price from $0.99 to $14.99, featuring the multitasking Glimpse, monster-building Big Boss, Camera for TouchPad, and Audubon Birds, a field guide that’s decidedly less slingshot-based that other bird apps. The deal expires on the 31st — all of the promo info can be found in the source link below. The company is set to offer up another app six-pack in September.

Update: We’re hearing in comments that the codes are no longer working. Thankfully, HP has promised more free dealies in the near future.

Human rights activists and free speech advocates have every reason to worry about the future of an open and uncensored internet, but researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Waterloo have come up with a new tool that may help put their fears to rest. Their system, called Telex, proposes to circumvent government censors by using some clever cryptographic techniques. Unlike similar schemes, which typically require users to deploy secret IP addresses and encryption keys, Telex would only ask that they download a piece of software. With the program onboard, users in firewalled countries would then be able to visit blacklisted sites by establishing a decoy connection to any unblocked address. The software would automatically recognize this connection as a Telex request and tag it with a secret code visible only to participating ISPs, which could then divert these requests to banned sites. By essentially creating a proxy server without an IP address, the concept could make verboten connections more difficult to trace, but it would still rely upon the cooperation of many ISPs stationed outside the country in question — which could pose a significant obstacle to its realization. If you fancy yourself a Stanford (wo)man, but lack the requisite dollars to actually attend, now’s your chance to collect those collegiate bragging rights. Starting October 10th, you can join Professor Sebastian Thrun and Google’s Director of Research, Peter Norvig, in a free, online version of the school’s Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course. The class covers, “knowledge representation, inference, machine learning, planning and game playing, information retrieval, and computer vision and robotics,” and ambitiously aims to be the largest online AI course ever taught. If you’re feeling the ole red and white, you can register at the source link below, but if you’re looking for the official Stanford stamp of approval, we’re afraid you’re barking up the wrong tree — non-students will receive a certificate of completion from the instructors only.
