DoCoMo “Play! Prime” branded online world

Mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo just began a new online promotion where they created a branded miniature virtual world for users to compete for prizes by playing mini-games.

Play! Prime” allows visitors to pick from many different characters and wander the town in search of others to compete against. Each player begins alone, but can win followers by beating other players in the world at a variety of mini games.

After competing, the winner takes the followers of the loser, with the ability to get up to 100 followers within the allotted 300 seconds and 5 games. Top-ranked players get listed and, inevitably, end up trying to beat their previous scores as with any addictive online game.

Those who win all five games can enter their personal details to win a DoCoMo Prime Series phone, and everyone who finishes can download a free screensaver. Additional free mobile phone content is available by scanning the provided QR code, but is only available to current DoCoMo handset users.

Trend Potential
Play! Prime has taken the look and feel of mobile virtual worlds and made it PC friendly to engage users. For this and more in the mobile space, the Mobile Trendpool contains innovative applications, campaigns, and technology from around the world.

BMW designs PC case for Thermaltake

This new case for the fashion-forward PC gamer was dreamt up by the design wizards at BMW’s Designworks USA. Instead of throwing all the components in what essentially amounts to one big box (like practically every other case), Thermaltake’s Level 10 sees all the machine’s components — mobo, hard drives, optical drives, and so forth — seated in their own compartments. Constructed mainly from aluminum, this guy will make its official debut at Computex in early June. In the meantime, hit the read link for some more spy photos taken on the floor at CeBIT.

Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 Available for Free Download

This article was written on March 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

GTA 2If you’re looking for a great way to spend the rest of your Sunday afternoon, maybe you should do it playing some Grand Theft Auto (GTA). There is no doubt that GTA is best known for it’s car stealing madness as you rush around trying to avoid the cops and complete the jobs you’re hired to do…but that is what makes it so fun!

The most popular version of GTA is probably Vice City, which I happen to own myself for the Xbox, and it is quite addicting once you start playing it. There were two versions of GTA prior to that one and Rockstar, the creators of GTA, recently released Grand Theft Auto 2 as a free download for PC users.

You can currently download GTA 1, GTA 2 and another game called Wild Metal at no cost to play on your computer. They do want you to register before downloading the games, but they just redirect you to another site to finish the download process. Here are the those direct links for anyone who doesn’t want to register (yes, the URL is an IP address which I also thought was weird…but you can always register at the above address if you don’t trust these URL’s):

GTA 1 Download – 328MB
GTA 2 Download – 344MB

I tried both versions on Vista and I couldn’t even get GTA 1 to install, but GTA 2 worked flawlessly. If you’re using XP you shouldn’t have a problem with either of them though.

One thing that I really like about those games is that they aren’t graphics intensive so they work great even on slightly older PC’s! So if you’re looking to keep yourself occupied tonight this might be do just the trick, but watch out for those pesky police officers because they don’t like when you steal their cars. ;)

Nintendo’s MotionPlus due out prior to Grand Slam Tennis, or June 18th

Stay with us here, okay? For the longest while, we’ve wondered when exactly Nintendo was planning on releasing its long-since announced MotionPlus Wiimote add-on. At long last, pieces are beginning to come together. According to EA Sports’ official Grand Slam Tennis page, said title will be available for the Wii on June 18th. Hop over to a recent Nintendo Power article about said game, and you’ll find producer Thomas Singleton asserting that the MotionPlus accessory is “due out prior to Grand Slam‘s release.” So, putting one and one together, we’ve come to the conclusion that Nintendo should ship its MotionPlus add-on prior to June 18th, or at least prior to whatever day Grand Slam Tennis gets delayed to. Logical?

Ben Heck fashions breath-controlled kick pedal for Guitar Hero

Ben Heck‘s at it again, and this time, he’s cobbled together a breath-controlled kick pedal for use with Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, if that’s your flavor) meant for people in wheelchairs, or who don’t have use of their legs, but still want to get in on the rocking action. After tearing apart the kick pedal to expose its piezoelectric sensor, he mods it so that, rather than reacting to physical pressure, it’ll react to air pressure. To get the job done, you’ll need some PVC piping, a hot glue gun, and a drill. Hit the read link for full instructions and video of Ben himself testing out the device!

Apple iMac murdered, reborn as all-in-one DreamCast mod

This may look like a beloved iMac, but make no mistake, it’s just a shell of its former self. CGCC forum member Logicdustbin decided to gut the all-in-one and replace its innards with a Sega Dreamcast and 15-inch LCD monitor. The result? The iCast, a beautiful homage to simpler times. Hit up the video after the break to see this Fronk-en-shteen in action, playing a game that’ll assuredly prepare our children for a post-apocalyptic world.

Wii Comes Up Big in March

This article was written on April 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

wii family fun-2.pngAbout a month ago we took a look at how each of the consoles were still stacking up to each other in the U.S., and not surprisingly Nintendo was widely outselling the competition in both the handheld and console gaming markets. As March rolled on nothing much changed, except that Nintendo sold about 300,000 more Wii’s than the previous month:

  1. Nintendo Wii – 721,000 units
  2. Nintendo DS – 698,000 units
  3. Sony PSP – 297,000 units
  4. Microsoft Xbox 360 – 262,000 units
  5. PlayStation 3 – 257,000 units
  6. PlayStation 2 – 216,000 units

From what I hear the Wii consoles can still be quite a challenge to find stocked in stores, which means Nintendo has to be pulling in some good money. Last month the Wii didn’t have many of the top selling games which led many (including myself) to believe that consumers were content with having just the Wii Sports that the console ships with. Well, that may not be the case because Nintendo definitely knocked one out of the park with the Super Mash Brothers Brawl game:

  1. [Wii] Super Smash Bros: Brawl – 2.7 million units
  2. [Xbox 360] Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 – 752,300 units
  3. [Xbox 360] Army of Two – 606,100 units
  4. [Wii] Wii Play – 409,000 units
  5. [PSP] God of War: Chains of Olympus – 301,600 units
  6. [Wii] Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock – 264,000 units
  7. [Xbox 360] MLB 2K8 – 237,100 units
  8. [Xbox 360] Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – 237,000 units
  9. [PS3] Army of Two – 224,900 units

And you know that April’s stats are going to be along the same lines because the long awaited Mario Kart for the Wii will be released on April 27th. Despite being released near the end of the month I think we can expect to see Mario Kart top the charts for April.

PlayStation-induced palm lesions identified by Swiss scientists

It’s no Wiiitis, but Swiss scientists have ID’d a new skin disorder they believe came from prolonged gaming sessions. Dubbed “PlayStation palmar hidradentitis,” the condition is marked by painful lumps that appear on the palms. This Dr. House diagnosis came from a 12-year old girl who visited Geneva hospital with hand lesions allegedly from hours-long gaming marathon, and that she fully recovered after a ten-day PlayStation hiatus. While being careful not to discredit the findings, Sony spokesman David Wilson chimed in to say they had never heard of a case like this, despite hundreds of millions consoles sold, and as with any leisure activity, “there are possible consequences of not following common sense, health advice and guidelines.” Hey, at least she didn’t break her arm.

Mad Catz Street Fighter IV FightPad Review: I’m Going to Kill You So, So Bad

Let’s get this much out of the way: Shoryuken for shoryuken, the Mad Catz Street Fighter IV FightPad is a vastly superior instrument of destruction compared to the standard Xbox 360 controller.

Price: $40

Verdict: In one sense, the verdict is that straightforward—the fantastic floating D-Pad and arcade-style six-button layout crush the regular Xbox 360 controller when it comes to fighting games. The FightPad makes my game so much better, so much more precise, I don’t think I could go back to using the old pad.

Here’s what I mean: With the old pad, on average, I would successfully execute Fei Long’s rising dragon kick (or insert any dragon punch-based maneuver) about 5-7 times out of 10 tries. With the FightPad, it’s like 9 times out of 10. Moves requiring 720-degree motions, like Zangief’s super, come off much easier as well, and exactly when I want it to (when someone’s up in my face—PILEDRIVER). Back, forward, back forward style specials, like with Honda or Blanka, aren’t noticeably easier to perform, though.

The shape and layout of the FightPad kinda reminds me of a Sega Genesis controller, and is for the most part, excellent, though if you have elven hands it might feel a little too big. For me, with medium mitts, it fits perfectly, no matter which way I hold it (I actually turn my right hand palm side down, so I can mash the buttons with my fingers whenever I play fighting games) and there’s some breathing room for gorilla-handed people too.

But there are some things you should know about that would be dealbreakers if beating people didn’t matter above all else. Numero uno, on the Xbox 360, this sucker is wired, which is lame balls for a $40 controller. It also feels very cheaply made, with glossy plastic Mad Catz found and melted down after it fell off a Christmas ornament truck. The rubber coating on the sides and back helps a little bit. Last, the sound quality coming through the headset on this thing is really terrible, like I was stranded on a desert island with a cellphone from 1987—it’s noticeably crappier than it is on the regular Xbox 360 controllers.

Those things said, if you wanna do better in Street Fighter IV—or any fighting game really, since it worked fantastically with Samurai Showdown II and SFIITHDR as well—and not have a real reason to curse at your controller when you get scrubbed, but don’t wanna (or can’t) drop the money on the outrageously awesome Tournament Edition FightStick, this is a reasonable alternative, if you can actually find it for the $40 MSRP.

P.S. If you wanna play Street Fighter IV with me, @reply me on Twitter and we’ll set something up later this week.

Microsoft Is Looking For Halo 3 Beta Testers

This article was written on December 06, 2006 by CyberNet.

Halo 3 Want to get your hands on Halo 3 as soon as possible? No problem…Microsoft just started accepting requests (click here to skip the splash screen) from people to test out Halo 3 Beta which will be available in the Spring of 2007. Not only do you get to play the game but you also get to be included in the development process. There are, however, some requirements that you have to meet before you register:

  • You must be 17 years or older and a resident of the 50 United States (includes District of Columbia) or Canada.
  • An Xbox 360 Pro console (includes hard-drive) or an Xbox 360 Core console with hard drive.
  • A valid Xbox Live Gold subscription.
  • A valid Microsoft. NET Passport account with a Xbox Live gamertag linked.

People who live in Europe will be able to register for the same Beta (that launches in the Spring) at a later date according to the site.

The real question is why has it taken so long to release Xbox’s “claim to fame” game? This thing should have been ready when the Xbox launched last year but somehow a closed Beta is finally popping up one and a half years later. I still only have the regular Xbox and Halo 1 and Halo 2 are definitely my favorite games, but I have not felt compelled to buy a new system as of right now. If Microsoft was really smart they would have Halo 3 ready for release when Nintendo and Sony launched their new systems, but they didn’t. All I have to say is that this game better be pretty darn amazing for taking this long to develop.
