Engadget Assembles the Ultimate Weapon: Wii Laptop

This article was written on January 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Wii Laptop There is no doubt that the Wii causes enough damage as it is from arms being whipped through the air as excitement builds in a game. Heck, there is even a site, Wii Have A Problem, that is dedicated to sharing everyone’s stories on how they got injured or what objects they have broken. All of this commotion comes from one little video game system that has motion sensitive controllers.

So now Engadget decided to go all out and assemble the Wii console into a laptop…thereby forming the ultimate weapon. I’ll get into that in a second, but first checkout this video of the Wii laptop:

It has everything from a 7-inch screen to a built-in power supply, which gives you nearly everything you need to play your favorite Wii games no matter where you are. So what’s the problem? Swinging arms! I could only imagine the number of people that would get hurt when they are on a airplane or a bus traveling somewhere with a portable system like this. With the Wii controllers it would feel natural to swing your arms and I’m sure it would be tough to hold yourself back. Thank goodness this isn’t a mass-produced device. :D

I do have to admit that this “laptop” was very well designed and they plan on revealing all of the juicy design details next Tuesday. With the Wii’s small size the whole package measures just 8.5 x 7.7 x 2-inches, but what I really want to know is how much it weighs. Maybe they’ll divulge that detail later on.

Logitech G700 mouse and G930 headset review

Logitech’s been making quality peripherals for as long as many of us have been computing, introducing some of us to our first wheel, wireless and infrared mice in the process. But when it comes to the latest in gaming peripherals, the company’s not always ahead of the curve. Razer and Microsoft have had high-end hybrid wireless mice for over a year now, and the 2.4GHz wireless headset isn’t exactly a new concept. That said, the company’s reputation is strong for a reason, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that Logitech’s created a mouse and headset that leapfrog — rather than just catch up to — what competitors have offered. See what we mean in our review after the break.

Logitech’s G700 mouse and G930 headset cut the cords, G510 chops price tag of primo keyboard parts

If you’ve already got a headset, mouse or keyboard, here’s hoping they suit you just fine, because if they don’t you’ll be tempted to blow oodles of money on Logitech’s latest gaming peripheral lineup. Today, the company revealed (and is launching) the G510 keyboard, the G930 headset and G700 mouse, and while the first is merely an amalgamation of solid peripherals that have come before (customizable RGB backlighting, USB audio, 18 programmable buttons, the whole nine yards) the latter two are premium wireless products. That’s right, Logitech finally has an answer to Razer’s Mamba and Microsoft’s Sidewinder X8 with its own 2.4GHz, 1000 report-per-second hybrid wireless mouse (with thirteen programmable buttons on tap) and they’ve ripped the wires right out of the G35 surround sound headset to stuff a play n’ charge battery and two 2.4GHz antennas on board. They’ll run you a pretty penny, of course, at $160 for the headset, $120 for the keyboard and $100 for the mouse, but you’ll find out if two of the three are worth your while later today when we publish our full review. We’ll let you guess which two. Press release after the break.

Update: Logitech’s got a breakneck video rundown of all the hot new G-series features; spot it right after the break. All three products are also on Logitech’s website now, though the headset and keyboard are labeled “out of stock.”

Deep Inside Xbox 360 Kinect and Why It’s the Future of Microsoft [Kinect]

Kinect is more than an Xbox 360 peripheral, it’s the future of Microsoft, or at least a very possible one. It’s the beginning of Microsoft’s plans for natural user interfaces, the step beyond the thing you’re staring at right now. More »

Show Off Your Old School Cred with a Space Invaders Couch

Space Invaders - CouchYou’ve been gaming since your youth, and remember the days of stand-up arcades where you couldn’t “beat” games; they just got harder and harder until they were literally impossible to play. Perhaps you were always the top-score holder at your favorite arcade and you remember gaming before the era of consoles. Designer Igor Chak remembers those days and has designed the Space Invaders couch to remind all of us.

The couch is a concept design right now and not available to purchase, but it makes a statement. Regardless of whether you remember the days of stand-up Space Invaders cabinets or you’re just a fan of retro video games, you can probably appreciate how your living room would look with one of these in it.

Eye Mario System enables your face to control any NES game (video)

We’ll be straight with you — prior to this fine day, we’d never heard of the whiz kids at Waterloo Labs, but we’ll be keeping our focus locked on their initiatives from this point forward. Why, you ask? Just look at that bloke above, who is in the middle of asking Mario to leap over a tunnel with a simple eye movement. Granted, we’ve seen eye-controlled interfaces before, but there’s just something — shall we say… inspirational — about being able to control your favorite NES titles with your own face. Better still, the crew is providing the full blown how-to down in the source, and if you’re not a fan of strapping an array of electrodes on your person, you still owe it to yourself to peek the video past the break. Oh, and it’s good to see these guys still have to blow on their NES cartridges to get ’em to work right — misery adores company, eh?

Game Gripper makes grand entrance on Nokia’s N900 (video)

Say what you will about Nokia‘s strategy (or lack thereof), but there’s no denying that the N900 is one capable gaming machine. Thus, it makes perfect sense for the blokes at Game Gripper to mold a controller specifically for that very handset, no? We’ve already spent a fair amount far too much time with our made-for-Droid edition, and if you’re looking to boost your enjoyment level when playing NES ROMs, you can toss your pre-order in this very second. The company’s offering the complete Game Gripper N900 for €14.95 ($20), or the button set alone for €3.95 ($5), with initial shipments expected in around a fortnight. Head on past the break for a taste of that aforementioned Mario action.

Digital Storm and Nvidia Offer 3D Vision Surround Gaming

DigitalStorm.jpg

Are you ready for an immersive gaming experience? How does 3D HD multi-screen sound? Check out Digital Storm‘s latest gaming computer, Black Ops. Nvidia’s 3D Vision Surround Technology expands your gaming real estate across three monitors for the widest screen experience you’ve ever had. Gamers will enjoy a complete survey of their surroundings and will be able to see enemies faster than ever. Nvidia’s GoForce GTX 400 GPU creates the horsepower needed to drive 750M pixels per second for three screens in full HD 1080p 3D Vision for a 5760×1080 experience.

Set up promises to be simple, thanks to Nvidia’s multi-display software. You won’t need adapters, as 3D Vision works with standard monitor cables. There’s even a setup wizard that guides gamers through the process and allows bezel correction so that one monitor blends smoothly to the next. If you’re wondering what to play, Nvidia’s software automatically converts over 425 games to stereoscopic 3D without the need for special patches. These PCs are available now at a price range of $2,833 to $3,499.

CTA’s $20 Baby: Ultimate Boxing Gloves for PS Move

Well, it was only a matter of time before CTA started churning out accessories for the PS Move. Not unlike a similar offering for the Wii, the Ultimate Boxing Gloves are meant to add “realism and excitement to boxing and street-fighting games” by providing “fist-clenching ability” and compatibility “with all PS Move boxing game launches, including The Fight: Lights Out.” Also on tap for the company are the Triple Port Charging Station (for simultaneously charging your PS Move Controller, Navigation Controller and Sixaxis controller), Dual Port (charging one PS Move Controller / Navigation Controller set) and Quadruple Port Charging Stations (for two sets of controllers). Sounds great, guys — but we’re still holding out for something incorporating wings or a rowing machine. Charging Stations due out in September, while the gloves should be available October 1 for $20. PR after the break.

Best Buy to slash prices for old Xbox 360 special edition bundles tomorrow? (Update: yes)

Let’s face it: despite the new Xbox 360 being joyously quieter and more efficient, the previous model still manages to seduce some of us with its sexy curves. Speaking of which — according to Joystiq’s source, Best Buy’s going to kick off August by lowering the prices for the Splinter Cell: Conviction and Final Fantasy XIII previous-gen Xbox 360 bundles. For just $299 — $50 off the current price point (and $100 off the launch price) — you still get a copy of the corresponding game title, a 250GB HDD, and two wireless controllers. So that’s gaming sorted for the summer; now put that $50 towards some cooling aid and you’re good to go.

Update: and the new prices are live. Grab them while they’re hot.
